PHOENIX (CBS5) - Thursday was a crucial day for Jodi Arias's defense as they try to convince a jury that the convicted killer deserves a life sentence and not the death penalty for killing her former lover nearly seven years ago.  

Day 35 of the sentencing retrial of Arias got underway at 10 a.m. in Maricopa County Superior Court before Judge Sherry Stephens.

Attorney Kirk Nurmi cross-examined the state's key witness, psychologist Janine DeMarte.  

DeMarte admitted Arias suffers from a mental illness. The testimony comes just two days after the same doctor refuted claims that Arias was a victim.

"It's good for the defense because maybe they can get one person on the jury that thinks 'I don't know if I can give somebody with mental illness the death penalty.' So that puts something in the jurors minds to think about," said Jen Wood of Jen's trial diaries.

Several court watchers said the defense scored major points but it won't be known if it's enough until the sentence is handed down.

Sane people are capable of horrendous acts of evil. People with
antisocial personalities,  kill their victims and go on with their day
as though nothing ever happened. That is precisely what Jodi Arias did.
She killed Travis and then spent the next day with Ryan Burns, kindling
the flames of a budding new romance. Even her own mother wondered how
Jodi could kill Travis and simply return to business as usual.

Jodi’s barbaric actions might be “crazy” by society’s standards, but she is quite sane....."

I find the highlighted text to be interesting in nature.. it could be argued that "Mental Illness" is a mitigating factor although the reality most certainly must be that sane people do not commit horrendous acts of brutality and murder. It would seem to me that mitigation should be if there is enough redeeming factors to spare the life of an individual … I honestly cannot say having witnessed the first trial that I can find any trait or reason that Jodi should be spared. She manipulated the courts and the media. She has shown no real remorse.. her interviews where she made very scripted remarks about her regrets were not sincere. She enjoyed every moment of her infamy and took pleasure in thinking she had "put one over" on everyone. She is even sicker than people would want to believe. She is an Amorous narcissist and that in my opinion does not redeem her. but that is only my opinion.
