Sheriff Bosenko: 'Suspicious circumstance' surround disappearance of baby girl
By Jennifer Scarborough
POSTED: 2:52 PM Jul 02 2015 UPDATED: 7:11 PM Jul 02 2015
HAPPY VALLEY, Calif. - The parents of a missing 6-month-old were questioned at the Sheriff's Office while search crews combed the countryside for the baby girl.
Matthew Graham woke up around 5 a.m. Thursday morning and found his daughter was not in her crib in his home on Noosha Lane in Happy Valley. He called authorities around 5:26 a.m. to report her missing. He said he last saw Ember in her crib at about 10:30 Wednesday night.
Family members said the girl has a seizure disorder and needs medication for it.
Graham's father, Wayne, said his son and Ember's mother, Jamie Lee Graham were married last August and Ember is their only child. Matthew lives in Happy Valley while Jamie Lee lives in Anderson. Earlier Sheriff Tom Bosenko said the woman lives in Shingletown.
Both Grahams were questioned by authorities. Sheriff Bosenko said while neither one of them have been ruled out in the baby's disappearance, no one has been arrested.
Bosenko said the Child Abduction Response Team, or CART, has been activated. That is a team made up of members from various law enforcement agencies with special knowledge on handling missing children cases. However, an Amber Alert has not been issued.
"Suspicious circumstances surrounding the disappearance have led us to doubt the effectiveness of an Amber Alert," Bosenko said.

Sheriff's Office asking for public's help with missing baby case
By Maghan Hunt
POSTED: 5:22 PM Jul 03 2015 UPDATED: 10:58 PM Jul 03 2015
REDDING, Calif. - The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit said on Friday that Matthew Ryan Graham, 24, is a person of interest in the case of his missing infant daughter.
According to deputies, they are now asking for the public's help by releasing a photo of Graham’s pickup truck in an attempt to find anyone who may have seen the vehicle parked or being driven in the Clear Creek Road area on Wednesday evening.
The vehicle is described as a 1990 dark blue, full-size extra cab, Chevrolet fleet side pickup with flat black paint on the side panels, black rims, no license plates and a cow bell hanging underneath the front bumper.
According to deputies, Graham’s statements to Sheriff’s investigators in regard to his 6-month-old daughter Ember Skye Graham’s disappearance have been inconsistent.
They explained that this information has led them to shift their search efforts Friday, from the area around Graham’s residence on Noosha Lane in Happy Valley, to the Clear Creek Road area, from Cloverdale Road east to Highway 273.
~Snipped~
Anyone with information leading to the whereabouts of Ember Graham, please contact Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit at 530-245-6135 or Sheriff’s Records at 530-245-6025. Information can also be sent to the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit email address at mcu@co.shasta.ca.us

Mother of missing baby standing behind father named person of interest

POSTED: 2:56 PM Jul 03 2015 UPDATED: 7:32 PM Jul 03 2015
Happy Valley, Calif. - Matthew Graham has been named a person of interest in the case of his missing 6-month-old daughter, Ember Graham. However, authorities are also saying they have not ruled out that the little girl was abducted.
Graham's wife, Jamie Lee Graham, believes there's no way Matthew had anything to do with their daughter's disappearance.
"He loves her more than he loves me. He loves that little girl more than I've ever seen anybody love somebody," Jamie Lee Graham said. "He is the most dotting dad, he will change as many diapers, he's so patient with her. There's no way he did this. There's no way."
Jamie believes someone took her daughter. She said her baby girl is at risk, wherever she is, because she has epilepsy.
"Whoever took her didn't bring her medication. I don't know what's happened to her," Jamie said with tears in her eyes.

HAPPY VALLEY, California - The increasingly desperate search for a missing 6-month-old Happy Valley baby stretched into its second day Friday, as investigators named her father a “person of interest” in the case and announced a $10,000-maximum reward for information.
Based on “inconsistent” information from Matthew Graham, 24, about his daughter’s disappearance, searchers shifted their attention from the area around his home on Noosha Lane to Clear Creek Road from Cloverdale Road east to Highway 273.
Without saying why they want to know, investigators with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit released a photo of Graham’s pickup and asked the public to call them at 245-6135 if they saw it on Wednesday evening parked or driving on Clear Creek Road.

REDDING, California - The family of baby Ember Graham and volunteers fanned out across Shasta County on Saturday looking for leads that may help in locating the 6-month-old, who has been missing from Happy Valley.
About a dozen people, all relatives of Matthew Ryan Graham, the baby’s father, began their search after a brief morning meeting in front of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1934 in downtown Redding.
Jamie Lee Graham, the baby’s mother, was the sole representative from her side of the family. She said that was because members in her family were doing their get-together in the Clear Creek area and working with agency officials.
“Everybody copes differently,” she said. But it did not mean they were not supportive of her husband, Matthew Graham. “Nobody thinks that he’s capable — there’s no way he would ever, premeditated or accidentally (do) anything.”

Family continues search for missing baby; 'A nightmare that won't end'

HAPPY VALLEY, California - Dozens of family members, friends and even strangers continued the increasingly desperate search for 6-month-old Ember Skye Graham on Sunday, fearing that the rough terrain, smoldering heat and wildlife plaguing their search efforts would be even worse for the missing infant.
“I keep praying, telling her, ‘Grandma’s going to find you,’” Ember’s grandmother, Deborah Tomlin, said in tears as she scrolled through pictures of the missing baby on her phone Sunday afternoon. “I came out here to save my grandbaby, not to find her body…God, I never imagined myself looking through dirt for my grandbaby. You want to find her, but you don’t. I don’t want her to be lying in a ditch or a gully.”
About 60 people showed up throughout the day Sunday to aid in the search for Ember, who’s been missing from the Happy Valley home where her father was watching her since Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Family members said sheriff’s investigators told them they would resume their searches for Ember on Monday morning, but Trudy Nickens of Nor-Cal Alliance for the Missing said she came forward to help the family continue the search over the weekend.
“We couldn’t just leave this family sitting here by themselves,” she said.

Re: Ember Graham, 6 Months Old Infant, Missing From Her Crib - July 2, 2015 - Happy Valley, CA
California investigators eye dad in baby girl’s disappearance
BY Doyle Murphy / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS / Sunday, July 5, 2015, 8:58 PM
California investigators have jailed the father of a missing baby — but his family claims there’s no way he hurt the little girl.
Matthew Graham is officially a person of interest in the bizarre disappearance of his 6-month-old daughter, Ember, authorities said.
The 24-year-old dad raised suspicions after a series of “inconsistent” statements, according to the Shasta County Sheriff.
~Snipped~
He told investigators he last saw about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday and she was gone when he woke. Before the day was out, authorities had begun to wonder if he was telling the truth.
They jailed him on an unrelated probation violation on Thursday night, and he remained in custody through the Independence Day weekend as law enforcement agencies and relatives expanded the search area from around the family’s Happy Valley home to roads a short distance away.

Graham’s family, including wife Jamie Lee Graham, said deputies are wasting their efforts looking at the young dad.
“He loves her more than he loves me,” Jamie Lee Graham told KRCR News. “He loves that little girl more than I've ever seen anybody love somebody. He is the most doting dad... There's no way he did this. There's no way.”

Sheriff's office says Matthew Graham uncooperative

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said Monday that due to Matthew Graham's inconsistent statements and layout of property, it is "highly improbable" that Ember was abducted. Bosenko also said he expects to submit a case against Matthew Graham to the District Attorney's office soon.

More than 90 law enforcement search and rescue personnel are scouring the areas around Clear Creek Road, and portions of Cloverdale Road in Happy Valley and in the south Redding area.
Shasta County Secret Witness has posted a $10,000 reward for anyone who can provide information on Ember Graham's whereabouts or information about what lead to her disappearance.

HAPPY VALLEY, California - Revelations about missing baby Ember Skye Graham’s father show discrepancies in Matthew Graham’s story and allegedly poke holes into his claims that she was kidnapped.
After making public its investigation Tuesday afternoon, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office suspended the ground search effort to find the 6-month-old infant and said search and rescue efforts will be redeployed if “viable tips” surface.
Sheriff Tom Bosenko also Tuesday declined to reveal whether the search had turned up any evidence because it would compromise the investigation. However, he confirmed a body has not been found.
“My thoughts and prayers are got out to the family, but at this point, it’s not looking good for the family,” he said.

Search suspended for missing 6-month-old girl in Northern California
By Veronica Rocha
July 7, 2015, 5:40 PM
Law enforcement officials are suspending their search for missing 6-month-old Ember Skye Graham after six days, saying inconsistencies in her father’s story about her disappearance has made it nearly impossible to find her.
Shasta County sheriff’s officials have named Ember’s father, Matthew Graham, 24, as a person of interest. Graham, who has been arrested on a probation violation, was the last person to see Ember as she slept in her playpen Wednesday night in his Happy Valley home.
Detectives say Graham’s story about his daughter’s disappearance is riddled with holes. He told sheriff’s detectives that Ember was abducted by a stranger, but investigators haven't found any “credible evidence” to support his claim.
“Matthew showed very little remorse for the disappearance of his daughter,” Sgt. Pat Kropholler said in a statement. “At no time during the eight-plus hours that he was with detectives did he ever inquire what was being done to find her.”

REDDING, California - The father of a missing 6-month-old girl was released today from Shasta County Jail after admitting to a probation violation allegation that he did not complete a 60-day work program.
Matthew Ryan Graham, who had completed 15 days of that 60-day program, was ordered to complete an additional 30 days, as well as the 45 days he has left remaining, to settle the case.
Graham will be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor. According to the jail website, Graham was no longer in custody as of 5:30 p.m.
As his family continues its desperate and anguished search for the baby, some members, including his wife and his father, attended Graham’s brief afternoon hearing in Superior Court.
Following the hearing, they declined to comment and his wife was whisked away by Graham's mother, Sheila Graham.

Did father lie about the abduction of his own baby? Dad 'caught on camera' driving his daughter away from home, as police call off search and focus on HIM
. Matthew Ryan Graham, 24, reported that his daughter Ember disappeared around 5.30am from their Happy Valley home on Thursday
. The Shasta County Sheriff's Office suspended the search for the baby as investigators' shift their focus to Graham, who is in jail
. Police have surveillance video of Ember unfastened in a safety seat inside her father's pickup truck
. Graham became a person of interest in his daughter's disappearance after giving inconsistent statements to investigators
. When investigators showed Graham the video, he told them he couldn't remember what he did and asked for a lawyer

Investigators' have now shifted their focus to Graham, who is in jail on an unrelated probation violation stemming from driving under the influence and forgery.
According to police, surveillance video which they have obtained shows Ember unfastened in a safety seat inside her father's pickup truck.
The video also shows Graham, 24, arriving with his daughter at the Happy Stop Market, then going inside with her and pumping fuel Wednesday night, when he says Ember disappeared.
Graham told authorities he took the baby for a drive to get her to fall asleep, then went to the store and drove back home, according to Sergeant Pat Kropholler.
Kropholler said: 'Matthew said he did not stop and did not have any vehicle problems while on this trip. He agreed that it only took under 10 minutes to complete the drive.'
But the video clearly shows Graham driving the opposite direction from his home when he leaves the store. The video shows his pickup truck heading toward his home about an hour later, Kropholler said.
When investigators showed Graham the video, he told them he couldn't remember what he did or where he went during that hour, he added.
'When detectives pressed him to remember, he asked to speak with a lawyer before any further questioning,' Kropholler said.
A jail official said she didn't know if Graham has a lawyer.

HAPPY VALLEY, California - UPDATED AT 7:30 P.M.
Investigators have cordoned off the area, and sheriff’s deputies have been assigned to keep an overnight watch. The search will resume in the same location early Saturday morning.
Earlier this week, Bosenko said his office would submit a case to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office recommending charges against Graham “sometime soon.”
Asked how close his office is to submitting the case, Bosenko wasn’t so firm on a date. He said it will depend on what happens during this new search, though it would not change the charges his investigators were planning to recommend.
“We still have to do our part of the work and ensure a thorough and complete investigation,” he said.
UPDATED AT 4:50 P.M.
Teams specialized in ground search and man tracking are scouring terrains in the Ono for clues into the mysterious disappearance of Ember Skye Graham, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said.
The sheriff, who spoke from a command post on scene, said new developments in the case lead his investigators to the small town, about 10 miles west of Happy Valley. He said the teams are using cadaver search dogs.
The fresh leads were developed late Thursday and into today. He said they did not come through a tip.

REDDING, California - UPDATE on Saturday, 6:10 p.m.
Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko is holding a press conference into the disappearance of baby Ember. He said a pacifier found in the Ono area led searchers there.
Bosenko says Matthew Graham, the father of 6-month-old Ember, was a "person of interest" ever since the investigation started July 2.
Graham stole cash and a pistol from his mother this afternoon in Redding, Bosenko said. Officers think Graham may be in Caldwell Park, Benton Drive or in the Sacramento River Trail area, where searches are underway this afternoon.
Graham may be in an older model, brown Honda or import vehicle, Bosenko said. Graham's pickup has been impounded.
"If you see Matthew, call 911," the sheriff said.

Ember Graham’s Father Goes On The Run — Police Say He’s Armed And Dangerous
Posted: July 11, 2015
The Ember Graham case has just taken an urgent turn. As of this afternoon Matthew Graham is being sought by authorities in Shasta County. The Redding Record Searchlight reports that the missing infant’s father allegedly stole a.40-caliber gun along with some money from an area in Redding on Saturday afternoon at around 1:15. He is considered armed and dangerous at this time, adding a whole new element to the case surrounding his missing daughter.
This development comes on the heels of reports that searches have resumed in a new location for baby Ember. In fact, Fox News 40 reports that Shasta County authorities began searching the Ono area, a small town approximately 10 miles away from Happy Valley. This new activity has taken place just days after the police called off the official search. This latest search, however, has involved the use of cadaver dogs, which indicates that Shasta County Sheriff’s officials are looking for evidence of Ember Graham’s death.

AD, thank you for keeping the coverage on this situation updated.
I'm sad to say that I had a really bad feeling that this was not going to turn out well and it clearly has not. Given the recent developments with Mathew Graham, I fully expect that little Ember is not alive. But, why?

Hi Mylife101,
I could be mistaken, but I believe that he did not want Ember, he didn't want the responsibility. He was apparently separated from his wife and, she supposedly was getting ready to move back with him when Ember "vanished". I'm not certain, but I think that the fact that the baby suffered from seizures was a burden to him.
In my opinion, he is/was a social maladapted and maladjusted person without a moral compass.
P.S. You are very welcome!

Yes, I believe that you are probably correct, AD. Additionally, perhaps he was also concerned with having to pay child support if the relationship with Ember's mother didn't work out. Indeed, it does appear that Mathew Graham did not like having to take responsibility for, and/or care for this child. It would seem that he could have just given sole custody of Ember to her mother and walked away from the responsibility in lieu of killing her if his only motive was disliking caring for a child with seizures. If MG had done that he would have been ordered to pay child support and that is why I wonder if he may have had a financial motive as well. So very sad!

Father of missing Baby Ember shot, killed in Northern California
By Joseph Serna
July 13, 2015, 10:30 PM
The choice before the man holding a gun in a Shasta Lake backyard seemed simple. Would he take Michael and Heidi Prado’s pickup truck or their Buick Lucerne sedan?.
The couple said they were sure they recognized the young man as Matthew Graham, a 23-year-old father who fled amid suspicion that he had something to do with his 6-month-old daughter’s disappearance.
“He told us to stay calm. ‘I know you’re scared, I’m scared too,'” Michael Prado, 58, recalled the man telling them. “’All I want is your vehicle.’”
Which one, Prado asked.
The man with the gun picked the Buick Lucerne.
~Snipped~
But with Graham’s death, the search for baby Ember Skye seemed to get harder.
“I’m sorry they had to do what they did,” Prado said. “The story is what did he do with this baby?”
