Ex-Marine suffering from depression shoots co-workers at NJ supermarket, kills 2 and himself

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) — An ex-Marine who had suffered from depression and once tweeted about killing "everyone I see" opened fire in camouflage gear at a supermarket early Friday, gunning down two co-workers before he killed himself, authorities said.

Terence Tyler, 23, left his night clerk shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m., drove off and returned 20 minutes later to the closed store with a handgun and an assault rifle similar to an AK-47, Middlesex County prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there, inputting new prices into the computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle, shooting at an employee standing outside and firing as he entered the store, blowing out the front windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, Kaplan said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Savannah couple says they were attacked in Ellis Square because they are not the same race.

Andrew Quade's eye is swollen shut and his face is swollen after the 23 year old says he was attacked in Ellis Square Friday night.

He was with his African-American girlfriend walking through the square when he says three men shouted racial slurs at them. The next thing the couple remembers, Quade was unconcios on the ground.

"He was basically left for dead. I don't want to go into all the gory details, but they could have stopped, but they kept going," said Quade's girlfriend Olufisayo Bakre.

Senseless: The couple said an interracial relationship has its challenges in the U.S. South but said they have never experienced such hostility

A Georgia man was left bloodied and bruised after he was brutally attacked for dating an African-American girl.

The interracial couple were strolling through Ellis Square, a public space in Savannah, shortly before midnight last Friday, when they say three black men began taunting them.

The provocation began as racial slurs, then the scoffers started blowing kisses and suddenly the trio jumped the boyfriend, Andrew Quade - who is white, beating him and leaving him barely conscious.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police rescued a 17-year-old Henderson girl early Saturday morning to end her 21-hour kidnapping ordeal, and arrested her two alleged abductors.

Investigators tracked Melissa Duran and the suspects to a Las Vegas apartment complex, where she was found bound and blindfolded in a unit about 4:30 a.m., Henderson Police Chief Patrick Moers said. She was scared but not physically harmed.

Alejandro Sanchez-Sanchez, 25, and Cesar Sanchez, 30, both of Las Vegas, were arrested on charges of kidnapping and extortion after being found in other units, Moers said. They remain without bail in the Henderson jail and await an initial court appearance Tuesday.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina mother has been charged in the death of her 10-month-old daughter.

Authorities say 21-year-old Mary Ann Williams of York was charged late last week with homicide by child abuse.

Deputies say Williams left her daughter, Aaliyah, unattended in a bathtub at a Spartanburg motel on August 20. Emergency workers revived the girl, but she died in a hospital about a week later when she was taken off life support.

Williams was being held in jail Sunday awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn't known if she had an attorney.

For prosecutors, no-body cases a challenge

But experts say such murder trials can be won.

By MADELINE BUCKLEY
South Bend Tribune
6:35 a.m. EDT, September 3, 2012

SOUTH BEND -- Before Trina Winston's husband made his first court appearance on murder charges in her death, her sisters raised the question in an interview: What happens if police never find her body?

Tarrence Lee, 49, is accused of murdering Winston in his Mishawaka apartment last month, but investigators have yet to find her body. A spokeswoman for the St. Joseph County prosecutor's office said authorities are fanning into Illinois, still searching for Winston's body.

Legal experts say no-body murder cases pose a sometimes formidable challenge for prosecutors, but can be won with other evidence.

Court documents said witnesses told police they helped Lee dispose of Winston's body.

In a court appearance last week, Lee's attorney asked a judge to throw out the man's arrest, arguing that the state does not have probable cause without a body.

The judge will issue a ruling Sept. 21.

ABC NEWS

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fighter jet crash caught on tape by spectators at an Iowa air show that killed a pilot.

Three jets in tight formation rumbled over the crowd at the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport, Iowa, Saturday when one of the pilots, 59-year-old Glenn Smith, appeared to lose control of his plane, a Soviet-era fighter plane.

A home video captured the pilots going into a complicated maneuver, switching places mid-air and passing within inches of each other before the plane made a dive straight down.

Wis. dad, friend charged in pit bull attack on son
Published September 06, 2012

" Haack told AP that Lisko called him Friday about 10 p.m., shouting for him to come over. Haack, a 56-year-old mechanic who lives a few miles away, said he grew nervous when he saw Lisko's driveway was dark and few lights were on in the house.

He said he walked cautiously into the house and looked around, noticing what appeared to be laundry hanging from a clothesline on the darkened porch. Then he saw movement.

"I looked closely, and here I found this young kid hanging upside-down," Haack said. "I had to yell at them guys twice to take him down."

Haack, meanwhile, defended Bubba as "the nicest dog in the world."

GLASTONBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police confirm human remains found in Glastonbury over the weekend belong to a missing East Hampton woman.

A woman, who was walking her dog along a dirt trail known as Windham Road, discovered the remains in a shallow grave around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The State Medical Examiner says the remains belong to Jini Barnum , an East Hampton woman who was last seen on July 28. Police say she left home that night after she had a disagreement with her boyfriend.

Barnum, 30, had been the focus of an intensive search and investigation after her boyfriend, Anthony Garofalo, reported her missing on July 28. Garofalo was the last person known to have spoken to her, following an argument that day. Barnum’s child was six weeks old at the time.

Garofalo is currently being held by the Department of Correction on charges of violating his parole. The nature of those charges was withheld due to the ongoing investigation into Barnum’s disappearance, Department of Correction spokesman Brian Garnett told Patch.

The Glastonbury and East Hampton Police Departments are working together on the investigation, which remains ongoing

Missing woman Jini Barnum was discovered recently in a shallow grave in Connecticut. Now her boyfriend, the man who reported her missing, is a suspect in her death. It also turns out the missing woman's cause of death was strangulation -- a mode of homicide that indicates intimacy with the victim.

Anthony Garofalo is a registered sex offender who did time for kidnapping, among other offenses. He's the last one to see the slain woman, and even reported her missing back in July. Statistically Anthony Garofalo has been suspicious since day one. That's why it's not very surprising to find out that he's a suspect in the woman's murder.

Police say missing woman is endangered

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A woman who has not been heard from since Sept. 1 may be endangered, according to police.

Police say Kathleen Haley, 37, last spoke to her family on Sept. 1 and has not been seen since Aug. 22. Haley's family told WAVY.com it took two phone calls to police to file a missing persons report Sept. 7.

"[The officer] felt under the circumstances that it was not at that point a missing persons [case]," Haley's mother said. A second call to police from Haley's family and another officer looking into the case classified it as a missing persons case.

NEWPORT NEWS — Police searched the apartment of Kathleen Haley after her family reported her missing, and they found her entire bed was missing. And there were more details noted in court documents.

A section of carpet had been cut out and removed.

A substance thought to be blood was found on a wall.

Haley's computer was missing.

And what was left behind raises more questions — several pairs of rubber gloves and cleaning supplies found in the bathroom, according to the court documents.

After searching the apartment, a detective wrote "it appeared that there may be more to the scene than a missing person," according to an affidavit for search warrant filed in Newport News Circuit Court.

On Tuesday police released a composite sketch of a man seen in the area of her apartment on Sept. 4 and who might have information in reference to Haley. Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said police still classify the investigation as a missing person case.

SHIREMANSTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) - A Cumberland County music teacher is under investigation for possible child sexual abuse of at least two students, abc27 News has learned.

Bill Jackson, 57, of New Cumberland was fired from his job at Bible Baptist School in Shiremanstown on Monday. He had worked as a teacher and choir director there since 2005, according to a school spokesman.

In a search warrant executed by Cumberland County detectives early Saturday morning at Jackson's home, the parents of a 17-year-old boy showed police 19 pages of emails, texts and instant messages between Jackson and their son. Investigators said the exchanges exhibited "grooming behavior in language."

(CNN) -- Amy Bishop Anderson -- the professor accused of shooting six of her colleagues, killing three -- pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges on Tuesday and agreed to plead guilty to a capital murder charge in two weeks.

Appearing in Madison County Circuit Court, Bishop Anderson accepted an agreement with the state and pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder. She also faces one count of capital murder.

Bishop Anderson will plead guilty to the capital murder charge before a jury on September 24, according to CNN affiliate WAFF. Under Alabama law, juries are required in capital murder cases even when a plea agreement has been reached.

Family members remember life of Jini Barnum

(Video)

EAST HAMPTON, CT (WFSB) - Relatives of a missing mother from East Hampton have lost a lot of sleep over the past six weeks while they hoped that she would be found alive.

The remains of Jini Barnum were found on a dirt trail known as Windham Road in Glastonbury after a woman discovered the remains while walking her dog Sunday morning.

"We're thankful for that dog and the lady who was walking her dog," said Barnum's grandfather, Ronald Devey. "We are thankful for the closure."

Later this week, her family will visit the shallow grave in a heavily wooded area where her remains were found.

"We'd love to have all the answers, though just finding her and having her back is huge," said Becci Hopkins, her mother.

Restaurant owner's daughter testifies in father's murder trial

Jacqueline Viens recounts a drunken talk with David Viens in which he said his wife choked to death on her own vomit after he tied her up and taped her mouth.

September 14, 2012

One night in 2009, during a drunken conversation, Jacqueline Viens said her father told her why her stepmother had recently vanished.

Dawn Viens had been needling him and he just wanted to sleep, Jacqueline Viens recalled her father saying. He'd tried barricading their bedroom door with a dresser to keep his wife out. When that didn't work, David Viens tied her up and taped her mouth, according to his daughter. The next morning, Dawn Viens was dead.

Jacqueline Viens said her father told her that his wife had choked on her own vomit. He also said, through tears, that her body would never be found, his daughter said.

~Snipped~

In 2011, after he learned that his daughter had spoken to detectives, David Viens leaped off an 80-foot cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes. His injuries were so severe that he appeared in court Wednesday in a wheelchair, wearing a gray suit and glasses and scribbling intently on a notepad.

Thank you Julie... I posted because like all other cases so many of the friends and acquaintances are impacted. I only played games with him but there are those on my FB that knew him personally and are very hurt by the situation. So sad when there was alot of police involvement prior to this.. Neighbours had made complaints as late as 5 days prior about the alleged shooter. So mind boggling! I just have difficulty knowing that early intervention may prevent so many tragedy's if there was a better way to handle conflict. He is also facing new charges! http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20120911/CRIME/120911002 assaulted someone in the courthouse prior to this as well and was due in court on Sept 27th...

Maybe, "conflict resolution" should be part of the school curriculum as it seems to be a vanishing art form!

A North Carolina woman who has been missing for three weeks grew up, attended church and played basketball in Rock Hill, family and friends say.

Crystal Morrison Prentice, a 31-year-old mother of an 8-year-old boy, was last seen walking away from her job at Connextions Recruiting on Corporate Drive in Concord, N.C., on Aug. 23, police say.

Forty minutes after Prentice showed up to work that Thursday, she decided to leave because she wasn’t feeling well, her sister, Mechelle Carey, said. Around 12:40 p.m., Prentice made a phone call to someone “who was like a grandfather to her,” asking him to pick her up and take her home, Carey said.

An off-duty Chicago Police officer whose motorcycle struck a 4-year-old girl in Maywood, shot and killed the girl’s father after the father and another man attacked the officer after the accident, officials said.

The officer — a 43-year-old, eight-year veteran of the force — was headed home about Saturday evening when the incident began, Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden said.

He was riding northbound on First Avenue in Maywood near Madison Street when he saw a girl suddenly dart into the street. To avoid striking the girl, the officer purposely ditched his motorcycle, putting it down on its side on the pavement, according to a statement from Maywood village spokesman Larry Shapiro.

" While she was moving the van, Armin Wand III took Jessica to a broken bedroom window, held her up with both hands and was about to put her back in the house before a woman stopped him, the complaint said."

The mother of the children was 17 was pregnant. She Rec burns and her unborn child died in the fire. She went back into the burning home to try to get to her other children and a burning beam fell on her.

Additional details of Sommers’ investigation to this time will appear in the full report of this story in Saturday’s edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.

Feds: Chicago-area man charged over attempted terrorist attack

By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 12:18 PM EDT, Sun September 16, 2012

Chicago (CNN) -- The FBI said Saturday it has arrested an 18-year-old American man who allegedly tried to blow up a car bomb in front of a downtown Chicago bar.

Adel Daoud, of the Chicago suburb of Hillside, was taken into custody Friday night after a "rigorous" undercover operation, the FBI said. He made an initial appearance Saturday before a U.S. magistrate judge and has a preliminary hearing Monday afternoon.

"The explosives that Daoud allegedly attempted to detonate posed no threat to the public. They were inert and had been supplied by undercover law enforcement personnel," said Gary Shapiro, the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

A Farmingville woman says she has not seen or heard from her 15-year-old daughter since early Sunday morning, and Suffolk County Police are currently trying to find her.

According to Christina Papik, her daughter Ailsa left home at around 3 a.m. on Sunday after calling a taxi cab to come pick her up. Papik said her daughter divulged to her younger sister, 14, with whom she shares a room, that she had been in communication with a grown man she had met online.

"I have no idea where my daughter is," Christina Papik told Patch over the phone Tuesday evening of Ailsa, who is a freshman at Sachem East High School. "I have not received a single word from her. Not an email, not a text, not a phone, nothing. She was apparently talking to the person after midnight when I was sleeping."

Ailsa is 5-foot-3 and 110 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes. She has a scar on her chin and when last seen, she was wearing a zip-up black hoodie, gray pants and white/gray Jordan sneakers.

'48 Hours Mystery' Reports on Ex-Reality Show Producer's Murder Trial

Written By Sara Bibel
September 20th, 2012

via press release:

SEVEN MONTHS INTO THE MURDER TRIAL AGAINST FORMER REALITY SHOW PRODUCER BRUCE BERESFORD-REDMAN, A “48 Hours Mystery” INVESTIGATION REVEALS THAT THE CASE AGAINST HIM MAY BE FALLING APART

BERESFORD-REDMAN SAYS OF JAIL: “I’VE BEEN HERE ALMOST SEVEN MONTHS NOW AND I’VE BEEN ON TRIAL THAT WHOLE TIME, AND THERE’S NO EVIDENCE”

Bruce Beresford-Redman, a former reality show producer, has been on trial for the past seven months in Mexico for allegedly killing his wife Monica during a 2010 vacation to Cancun. However, an examination of the evidence by 48 Hours Mystery suggests the case against him may be crumbling.

Jaime Cancino, Beresford-Redman’s attorney, tells 48 Hours Mystery the forensics against his client have been flawed from the start. Cancino maintains some key evidence is missing and that other evidence is now contaminated with mold because it was not properly stored. “At the end of the day, he’s going to be free. I can assure you that,” Cancino says in an updated edition of 48 Hours Mystery: “Fatal Episode, The Producer’s Story,” to be broadcast Saturday, Sept. 22 on the CBS Television Network (10:00 PM, ET/PT).

Accused: Her estranged husband John Howard appeared in court today wearing his wedding ring and said he wants to reconcile with his wife

The wife of an accountant accused of using company money to hire a hitman to kill her has spoken for the first time since a bullet ripped through her left eye and lodged in her lung.

After she was shot in her driveway on August 18, Nancy Howard was in a coma and doctors say it is a miracle she is alive, never mind walking and talking.

Speaking to News8 outside court, she said: 'I prayed through the whole incident and called on God to save me, and he did. He carried me through.

'I am thankful. Thankful that I have life, thankful that God has given me life. That's going to be a great future.'

Ex-"Survivor" producer: "I did not kill my wife"

Developing Stories - Page 18 542432 I am just watching this video, and half way thru i had 2 stop 2 say, "Wow, when you watch this guy.... The way Dr Lillian Glass would, reading body language....."

When you watch this video, keep in mind that when someone looks down and over or closes eyes they are speaking a lie. Watch him. Watch every lie. As he shakes his head no, just listen to the lies, he's sooo guilty. He lured her back from a separation saying, "No, you really were the love of my life! It's your bday, we'll go wherever you want!" She picks Cancun. Notice he says "She disappeared in the morning." Excuse me? She was gone all day, how do YOU know she "disappeared" in the morning? Why not afternoon? The interviewer asks him, "Oh she disappeared in the morning?" catching his consciousness of guilt, he's the killer. He knows she died in the a.m. She caught him texting his lover right before she "disappeared naked in the sewer dead".
