Area law enforcement agencies search the area below the Whiskey
Bay overpass on Sunday at mile marker 127 on Interstate 10 after
fishermen found a bicycle belonging to Mickey Shunick, a 22-year-old
college student who disappeared May 19 while cycling home from a
friend’s house. A MIckey Shunick “Missing” sign is seen attached to

The mother of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick said she believes her missing daughter is the victim of an accident after police on Sunday found the 22-year-old college student's bicycle under the Whiskey Bay bridge on Interstate 10.

Police say Shunick's bicycle was found about 30 miles east of Lafayette near the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin, and that Shunick's family confirmed it was her black-and-gold Schwinn.

Mouton said Sunday afternoon police were not ready to reveal the exact condition of the bicycle or where exactly it was found, except to say that it was under the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin bridge.

Joining in the search Sunday were authorities from the Lafayette Police Department, Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, along with other assisting agencies.

The area where the bike was found is just off of Exit 127 of I-10 in Iberville Parish, about midway between Lafayette and Baton Rouge. The road leading from the exit is rural and in a general swampy area, with tall grass and patches of thick woods.

Shunick bicycle found

The bicycle belonging to missing college student Michaela “Mickey” Shunick was found Sunday by a fisherman near Whiskey Bay, police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

The fisherman found the black Schwinn bike beneath Interstate 10 at Whiskey Bay exit No. 127 and called the Lafayette Police tip line sometime Sunday morning, Mouton said.

On Friday, police said a bicyclist seen in a video surveillance tape was believed to be Shunick. She was seen on the tape riding on Versailles Boulevard toward St. John Street, Mouton has said.

The bicyclist pedaled onto St. John Street, crossed over University Avenue and continued west on St. Landry Street where she was recorded by the surveillance camera around 1:48 a.m., Mouton said.

Some one knows what happened to Mickey Shunick.

Maybe that some one told a friend or whatever.

I think every effort should be made to increase the Reward.

Some people may not be willing to talk for $25,000 but might sing like a bird if the reward was $50,000 or $100,000.

I hope there was enough money made from the Benefit Concert where money could be put towards the Reward.

In a Texas case, the Reward started at $5,000; then $10,000; then $20,000, etc. It seems as the Reward was raised, it generated more leads for LE.

Without a doubt, the people and businesses of Lafayette and the surrounding areas have been very generous in donating billboard signs (not one but at least 16), water, snacks, food, supplies, etc. in regard to the search for Mickey Shunick. It is remarkable!

If I were involved in this search effort, I'd do all I could to get the reward increased.

In a case I'm referencing, the Reward money is in a separate bank account and will require two signatures to do the pay out, hopefully one day!

The Lafayette Police Department has stopped searching the Whiskey Bay area for missing ULL student Mickey Shunick. Crews had been combing through the area since fishermen found the 22-year-old's bike submerged in the water underneath I-10 Sunday.

LAFAYETTE, LA: 21 year old Mickey Shunick (pictured) was last seen at about 2:00 am (May 19) riding a black and gold Schwinn Cutter bicycle with glittery gold handlebars from a friend's home in the Saint Streets area of Lafayette. She was riding back home to the area near Ambassador and Congress, but never made it home and hasn't been seen since. She is 5'1" tall, weighing about 115 pounds, has shoulder length curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a small tattoo of a bicycle on her right outer ankle and a nose ring on her left nostril. She was last seen wearing a pastel multicolored striped shirt, light wash denim skinny jeans, and silver ankle boots. She was also carrying a light brown leather backpack, a black and yellow Vera Bradley wallet, a black Verizon slider phone and a small pink container of pepper spray.If you have any information on her whereabouts, please contact the Lafayette Police at 337-291-8633 or email findmickeyshunick@yahoo.com


Update: 5/28/2012

As of noon, Lafayette Police have discontinued the search of the area surrounding where Mickey Shunick’s bike was found. Investigators were unable to locate any other significant evidence. The investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATE 5/27/2012: Lafayette Police are confirming that Mickey Shunick's bike has been found beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 Bridge at Exit #127. Some local fisherman located the bike and notified police through the tips line. The entire area and the river are being searched for clues and evidence. Police are asking the public to remain out of the area so that law enforcement officials can search. The case remains under investigation.

Update 5/26/12: Detectives have provided an updated picture of the initial vehicle of interest and the pictures of two additional vehicles that were in the area during the same time frame when Mickey Shunick was last captured on surveillance footage. The first truck (Picture1) drove from the area that Mickey had traveled. It is evident from the new photo that the vehicle has a bed cover and tinted windows. The second truck (Picture2) is a white 4 door Chevrolet Z71 that traveled in the same direction of Mickey on St. Landry Street. The third vehicle (Pictures 3 &4) is an 80’s or 90’s 4-door vehicle with body work on the rear right quarter panel. Detectives are interested in locating the vehicles and speaking with the occupants to obtain further information on the case. Anyone with information about the case of the pickup truck is encouraged to call the tips line at 337-291-8633 or Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS.

UPDATE 5/25/2012: Detectives were able to identify a bicyclist believed to be Mickey Shunick travelling on Versailles Blvd and Saint Landry Street. At approximately 1:47AM the bicyclist is captured on Versallies Blvd travelling towards St. John Street. She then travelled on St. John Street and crossed over University Avenue, continuing west on St. Landry Street where she was captured on video at approximately 1:48PM. Investigators are seeking information regarding a white newer model four door pickup truck, which was captured on video after Mickey Shunick travelled on both streets. Anyone with information about the case of the pickup truck is encouraged to call the tips line at 337-291-8633 or Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS.

Calypso, yes she had a cell phone. A friend phoned her after 1:30 am (I think it was around that time). It is the last known communication on the phone. It has been verified by LPD.

Her sister, Charlie, Mom, friends, etc. have called Mickey's number numerous times before calling 911 to no avail.

She also had a brown leather backpack and a can of mace when she left B. Wilson's home.

Mickey Shunick media briefing: Bike found damaged

The only visible damage to the bike belonging to missing Lafayette woman Mickey Shunick was the rear tire, according to Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton. During a media briefing around 3:35 this afternoon, he said the rim was bent. Fishermen found the bike Sunday at the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Whiskey Bay exit. Mouton said her bike was submerged in the water off the bank of the Atchafalaya Basin. "Detectives are hopeful that forensic experts can find evidence on the frame, handle bars and handgrips that were recovered at the scene," said Mouton.

UPDATE VIII: Condition of Bike Released by Detectives

Lafayette, LA – Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department have released the condition of Mickey Shunick's bike as it was found. The bike was found to be submerged except for a small section of the frame. The bike's rear tire was found to be damaged. It is currently being processed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Detectives are hopeful that forensic experts can find evidence on the frame, handle bars and handgrips that were recovered at the scene.

Police discuss bike's condition

Experts at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab are examining Michaela "Mickey" Shunick's bicycle, found in the waters of the Atchafalaya Basin, for more clues into the college student's May 19 disappearance.

Meanwhile, as the volunteer search was halted Tuesday, Lafayette police are searching for the drivers of three vehicles that were in the same area as Shunick around the time she vanished.

Shunick's bicycle was almost completely submerged in the swamp waters near Whiskey Bay when two fishermen found it Sunday morning, Cpl. Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department said at a Tuesday press conference. Only a small piece of the bicycle was visible, but it was enough to prompt the fishermen to call the Shunick tips line.

Mouton said the bike's rear tire was damaged.

» Volunteer efforts to find Shunick have been indefinitely suspended, although some searching will still take place and scheduled fundraisers will continue.

» Walk-On's will host a fundraiser all day Wednesday at their location at 2336 Kaliste Saloom Road. Several bands will perform. Attendees must present a flyer, which can be found at findmickeynow.com, in order for the proceeds to go to the Shunick effort. Money will go toward the search efforts and incidentals for the Shunick family.

The statements made about the damage say "damage to the rear tire", and the wheel was bent. Has there been indications of the damage to the tire? Was it blown out or cut, or what?

Pretty hard to damage the rear wheel of a bike while riding it. A front wheel I can see being damaged by the rider hitting something. Sure would seem the rear of the bike had been struck by a vehicle. If that is the case then it would seem impact would cause the bike to go out of control and wreck causing some sort of damage (scratches/scrapes) to some other part of the bike. I suppose if the bike was dropped from the bridge it could have sustained damage to the rear wheel in the fall/drop from the bridge. I hope prints can be recovered from the bike frame.

Marica, Cpl. Mouton with Lafayett Police Dept. said, during the Presser today, that they do not believe the bike was dropped from the bridge.

He did not answer all questions about the bike. He declined to answer the specific damage to the bike tire.

I, like you, hope that prints or DNA can be obtained from the bike. That would be a huge break in the case!

Police investigating a possible new clue in the case of a missing Lafayette woman determined it was a false alarm.

Dive teams from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Department were called in to help after sonar equipment indicated an item in the water near where Mickey Shunick's bike was found.

Ride for Mickey at the Body Factory Lafayette

Can the plates on the Chevy Z-71 be identified? I live in TN and one identical to the one in the videos/pics is owned by a guy a couple of streets over from me. He has TN tags on his, I checked this morning.
