Arrest in Mickey Shunick Case

I am so glad they made an arrest and I hope he at least tells where her body is located. I don't think it will happen because he has already been in the system and I am sure the first thing he did was ask for an attorney.

It is said to say but women and children cannot be alone in the streets because there are people who will hunt them down to do harm. So so sad, I hope they are able to return her body to her family.

A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the disappearance of Louisiana college student Mickey Shunick.

Cops arrested Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, Thursday at his home in Church Point, La., six miles from where Shunick was last seen riding her bike. Lavergne has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

LAFAYETTE, La. -- A registered sex offender has been charged in the disappearance and death of a 21-year-old student missing since May 19.

On Thursday, police here charged Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, with aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, last seen as she rode her bicycle home from a friend's house at a little before 2 a.m. on a late spring Saturday.

"We are relieved that the police have made an arrest," Shunick's sister, Charlie Shunick, said via text message. "The circumstances are pretty distressing. If she is gone, it is a void in the fabric of the world and a devastating blow to our family."

Officials at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center said Brandon Lavergne, 33, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

During a preliminary hearing Friday morning via video conference, a judge assigned him a public defender after Lavergne told him he couldn't afford an attorney "for a case like this."

The judge also ordered he be placed in critical care in the jail to protect him from other prisoners.

Lavergne was identified as the driver on the white truck seen following Mickey. His white truck was at Whisky Bay where her bike was found. Police say his truck was found burned in San Jacinto County Texas. It was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas. When arrested yesterday he was in a new white truck. He has asked for a lawyer and is not cooperating. Police will not say why they believe Mickey is dead. Evidence indicates her bike was hit from behind.

Latest Update Lavergne Appears Before Judge Today

Today Brandon Scott Lavergne appeared before Judge Thomas Fredericks for his first hearing. He has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and 1st degree murder in Mickey Shunick's disappearance.

The whole hearing was done via video feed from the Lafayette Parish Courthouse and Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Lavergne was brought in wearing handcuffs and also wearing a green full body bad. According to sheriffs deputies, this was worn to protect him from attacks from other inmates. He is also being held ina private cell away from the general population of inmates.

“I must caution all of you that although an arrest has been made in this case, much work is left to be done,” Chief Craft said. “On May 19 the Shunick family reported Mickey missing… On May 25 video evidence was recovered from a Lafayette government building that captured Mickey on her bike.

“Several vehicles were also captured on the video and broadcast to the public. All the vehicles of interest were ruled out except for a white, Chevrolet Z 71 pickup truck. The driver, as well as the vehicle, was never identified, nor did anyone come forward.

“On May 26, Mickey’s bike was located under the Whiskey Bay Bridge with damage to rear tire, consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

“On June 14, investigators received information from a concerned citizen regarding a white Z 71 pickup that may be involved in Mickey’s disappearance. The vehicle in question was registered to Brandon Lavergne.

Investigators removed skirting on both sides of Brandon Lavergne's trailer in order to search underneath. St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office says a neighbor gave them a tip that Lavergne had recently removed and replaced some of the skirting. Investigators wrapped up their search of the house tonight. More to come at 10pm on KATC.

Excuse my sarcasm but were the residents of this small town stunned when he was found guilty and placed on a LIFE TIME sexual abuser list? Were they more stunned now than then? IMO, maybe a select group of person the media interviewed were "surprised" but if the reporters looked under a few more rocks, they would not have found so many were surprised as they were expecting this.

It is not unusual for a sex predator who is caught to carefully choose his next victim and end the life of that person so they can't tell. That is reality. He already has been found to be a sex predator; is he involved in the death and cover up of Mickey? IF he did not sexually abuse her, why hide a body? Why try to destroy evidence? That points to more ominous activities.

IMO, the truck MAY have been burnt in an attempt to destroy evidence AFTER info was released re damage on the vehicle that was seen in the vid. (Don't recall where the damage was reported. Was it seen in EACH of the vids PD have or not seen in an early vid and seen in a later vid indicating an accident in the ensuing time between the two vids? Dunno.)

Shunick searches continue after arrest

Efforts to bring Mickey Shunick home are continuing within Louisiana and outside the state's borders even after Thursday's arrest of Brandon Scott Lavergne in the case of the missing college student, a Lafayette investigator said.

Police are conducting both out-of-state and local searches for Shunick, said private investigator John Abdella, who has been working with police on the case since its beginning.

I'm sure there are many ways to read this, but she doesn't convey any messages that indicates she thinks her son is innocent.

Did the suspect/perp know people in San Jacinto vicinity?

Edited to add:
Did he file a stolen vehicle report with local LE?
Did he file with an insurance company for costs of his destroyed truck?

From the articles I read on his previous history - this guy spent 8 out of a 10 yr max sentence trying to get his sentence overruled. He was described as being a self-learned lawyer. Eight years and he kept fighting the system.

This guy has been in prison 8 yrs and knows the law well enough to know how to evade it. He knew what he was doing driving to Texas and burning that car and dumping the bike. They won't find any body or evidence anywhere near his house. He's not going to play nice with cops. They won't budge anything out of him. I'm so glad to hear the family has hired a private detective. It's exactly what I'd do because police just don't have enough resources and don't have a solid track record of effectively managing searches beyond state borders. A lot of red tape. I'd hire a P.I. as well. I hope they find her and nail this SOB for good this time.
