DURANGO, Colo. - A two day search at a reservoir in southwestern Colorado turned up nothing in the investigation into what happened to Dylan Redwine.

The 14-year-old boy has been missing since Nov. 19. He disappeared while spending a court-ordered Thanksgiving week visit with his father in Vallecito, near Durango.

Search dogs picked up a scent along the reservoir shoreline over the weekend. That prompted the two-day search below Middle Mountain Campgroud.

Nearly six months after teenager Dylan Redwine was reported missing, his father, Mark Redwine, released a statement Friday criticizing how missing children’s cases are handled by authorities and inviting Dylan’s mom to mediation.

“I am asking that we stop and evaluate the process as a community, to come up with a more productive approach in the search for Dylan and missing children across the country,” he wrote in the statement. “No child who is missing should have to wait for certain criteria to be met before the public is notified and an alert be sent out.”

“I firmly believe that the most critical time was in the first day or two or three and that everything possible should have been done. I think that not enough was done in that time frame,” Mark Redwine said in the interview.

Mark Redwine, in an interview with the Herald, also criticized how the investigation has been handled by the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, claiming there is not a 50-person task force but rather five investigators.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

Still No Sign Of Dylan Redwine After 6 Months (Video)

DENVER (CBS4) – He disappeared six months ago and there has been no sign of Dylan Redwine since.

The then 13-year-old Dylan vanished without a trace shortly before last Thanksgiving. His mother and father have very different theories about what happened to him.

“Six months may mark the day Dylan went missing, but every day has been a struggle since Nov. 19,” Dylan’s mother Elaine Redwine said.

Elaine Redwine opened up about the search for her son to CBS4’s Nina Sporano.

VALLECITO, Colo - Six months after Dylan Redwine disappeared, his father is speaking out -- criticizing the alert protocol, defending himself and asking the public to once again look at his son's picture.

Mark Redwine said he left the boy home alone while he went to run errands. Redwine said when he came home, Dylan was gone.

In an written statement, Mark Redwine asked the public to look at his son's picture and the children you see around you.

"I need the help of every single person out there to do this," Mark Redwine wrote. "Dylan could be anywhere out there so PLEASE look at his picture and the face of every child you see his age to see if it could be Dylan."

Redwine said he believes instead of searching for Dylan, the focus has changed to blaming and disrespect.

"There have been many rumors started most of which are untrue and none that have been helpful in our search for Dylan," Redwine wrote.

Illness affects Redwine booster

The woman who has spearheaded the effort in Bayfield to find missing teen Dylan Redwine has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Denise Hess founded Hope for Dylan Redwine shortly after he was reported missing from Vallecito Nov. 19. Since then, she has led search efforts and hosted fundraisers for the Find Dylan Redwine Fund.

Now the community is coming to her aid and hosting a fundraiser this weekend to raise money for Hess’ medical and general expenses while she undergoes treatment.

A bake sale will be held at Brenda’s Old West Cafe in Bayfield from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Benefit accounts have also been set up at First National Bank where the proceeds will go to pay for medical expenses and at Pine River Valley Bank in Bayfield for her general living expenses.

Anyone hiking or four-wheeling this summer in the backcountry, especially around Vallecito Reservoir, is asked to keep an eye out for any signs of a boy who went missing last November.

Dylan Redwine had a black backpack, black shirt, black shorts, black Air Jordan shoes, a Duke Blue Devils ball cap and an older-model Verizon flip phone, said Denise Hess, a family friend who has helped organize several community searches.

She asked outdoor enthusiasts to be alert for pieces of clothing or anything that appears out of the ordinary. She also asked pet owners to be aware if their dog is sniffing at something unusual or finds a piece of clothing.

Hikers around Vallecito Reservoir are being asked to keep an eye out for any signs of a boy who went missing last November.

Family friend Denise Hess tells the Durango Herald people have never stopped searching for 14-year-old Dylan Redwine and they need help.

She asked hikers to be alert for pieces of clothing or anything that appears to be out of the ordinary, the newspaper reported.

“We’ve been doing searches on almost a weekly basis, particularly after the snow melted off, and we’ll continue to do that in the foreseeable future,” La Planta County Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender told the Durango Herald.

" ... The search wrapped up late Wednesday evening. Investigators, along with volunteers, spent the last week searching a 12 mile stretch of Middle Mountain near Vallecito. The La Plata County Sheriff's Office says the search was not based on any recent tips nor new information.

 About 45 law enforcement and search and rescue workers discovered Dylan's remains and other items while searching in the Vallecito area along 12 miles of Middle Mountain Road, said sheriff's department spokesman Dan Bender.
 
They worked more than 1,600 man hours during the five-day search on the rugged, unpaved road, which runs parallel to the road Mark Redwine lives on.
 
Bender said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation positively identified bones as Dylan's on Thursday and notified Dylan's family. Bender would not reveal what other items were found.

7News reports that the items were found along a 12 mile stretch of Middle Mountain USFS Road, but authorities said that the latest searches were not the result of new information, rather they were follow up searches now that the snow had melted in the area.
 
Earlier Thursday, Dylan's parents Mark and Elaine Redwine were asked to go to Durango to discuss the latest developments with investigators, according to KDVR.
 
The Middle Mountain area is north of Vallecito Lake, rugged with dense forests, very steep drainages and deep canyons. The area searched ranged in altitude from 8,000 to 11,000 feet. About 45 law enforcement, search and rescue personnel participated in the 12-mile search of Middle Mountain Road and logged in over 1,600 man hours during the five-day-long search.

KUSA - Dylan Redwine's long-troubled family continues to be divided, even after the heartbreaking discovery of the 13-year-old's remains.
 
Investigators announced Thursday that DNA tests confirm the remains found near Middle Mountain Road in the southwestern Colorado town of Vallecito are Dylan's.
 
The La Plata County Sheriff's office says this was not an accident and not the work of an animal. No suspects have been named, but they were clear: someone did this to Dylan.

BAYFIELD – Dylan Redwine’s older brother, Cory Redwine, said Thursday he is sad to learn of his brother’s fate, but glad to close this chapter in what has been a seven-month search for Dylan.

“It’s sad to finally hear that he’s no longer with us, but it’s better than not knowing, wondering every single second of every single day,” Cory said. “It’s nice to have closure.”Dylan enjoyed playing football, camping, hiking and even arguing with his brother, Cory said. He made people smile.

“He was such an absolute joy,” Cory said. “Every memory I have with him is a highlight of my life.”

Candlelight memorial for Monument teenager

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - Residents plan a candlelight memorial for a 13-year-old boy who was found dead in southwest Colorado after he was reported missing in November.

The memorial for Dylan Redwine will be held Saturday night in nearby Bayfield. Authorities said Thursday they found the remains of the teenager during a search over the past week.

The boy lived in the Monument area with his mother, Elaine Redwine, but arrived in La Plata County on Nov. 18 for a court-ordered visit in Vallecito with his father, Mark Redwine.

Dylan Redwine now subject of homicide investigation, family at war

Yesterday brought the terrible news that Dylan Redwine, the thirteen year old who went missing in the Vallecito Lake area last November, was dead. Authorities confirmed that bones found during a recent search were part of his remains; see our previous coverage below. Now, doubt has been removed about whether his passing could have been of natural causes or due to an accident of some kind. Law enforcers are engaged in a full-scale homicide investigation as Redwine's shattered family members appear to be turning on each other again.

In the wake of the news, La Plata County Sheriff's Office personnel quoted by 9News said Dylan's death didn't seem to have been caused by something along the lines of an animal attack. Rather, he appears to have been deliberately killed.

Dylan Redwine case: Scientific testing key to identifying human remains

DENVER - When a human remains are discovered in suspicious circumstances, like the Dylan Redwine case, scientific methods and testing are often critical in identifying the body parts.

As a forensic anthropologist, Dr. Catherine Gaither studies bones to help determine someone's identity and how they died.

"I'm going to look for any evidence of trauma that may have been on the bones," said the Metropolitan State University of Denver professor.

The Redwine case is being treated as a homicide investigation, meaning the sheriff's office is looking for a killer.

"This is an active homicide investigation," La Plata County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Bender told 7NEWS.

"The information we have is there is no reason for Dylan to go to Middle Mountain and there is no indication he did it on his own," Bender said.

Dylan Redwine’s Father: ‘I Want To Know What Happened To My Son’

DURANGO, Colo. (CBS4)- Now that the remains of Dylan Redwine have been found the question remains: how did he get there? Dylan’s father told CBS4 that his ex-wife has called him a killer.

“I was standing outside and her vehicle passed by and turned around in the driveway in front of my house and as she was passing by she muttered out the window, ‘Murderer,’” said Mark Redwine.

Dan Bender with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said the subdivision where Dylan was staying with his father is visible from Middle Mountain across the valley.

“We’re pursuing this as a criminal investigation and not an accident,” said Bender.

Dylan’s older brother Cory believes his own father may have the much-needed answers to the mystery.

“I believe that Mark is, Mark is holding the key,” said Cory. “We strongly believe that the last person to see Dylan knows the truth.”

Mark said he wants to see where his son’s remains were found and honor him with respect.

“I want to see, I want to know what happened to my son,” said Mark.

BAYFIELD, Colo. - More than 100 people came together Saturday night to hold a candlelight vigil for Colorado teen Dylan Redwine, according to the Durango Herald.

Family members, friends and neighbors gathered at Eagle Park in Bayfield at 8:30 p.m., to light candles and share stories about Dylan's life.

Dylan’s older brother, Cory, said he had so many memories of him he didn’t know how he could focus on one, the Herald reported.

Dylan’s friends, family grieve for a teenager they say was loved by all

BAYFIELD – A group of more than 100 family members, friends and neighbors said “goodbye” to Dylan Redwine Saturday night in a candlelight vigil at Eagle Park in Bayfield.

“Even people who never met Dylan came to love him,” said the Rev. Dan Straw of Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church. “We are grieving, and much of the world is grieving,” he said.

Many of the mourners in the park had in one way or another helped in the search for Dylan after he was reported missing Nov. 19, 2012, from his father’s home in Vallecito.

Before the vigil, Mark Redwine said he met with law enforcement Saturday and went with them up to Middle Mountain to the area where they found some of Dylan’s remains.

“It was horrific. It was unimaginable,” Redwine said. “No parent should go up there” in a situation like this, he said.

La Plata County, Colo. - Up until now, Elaine Redwine hasn't commented publicly on her son's remains being found on the side of a mountain in Vallecito, Colorado. On Sunday, she sat down with 9NEWS to talk about Dylan's life and death.

The last time Elaine Redwine saw her son and spoke to him was in November, 2012. Dylan was about to board a plane to spend Thanksgiving break at his father's home in Vallecito. Vallecito is a tiny community about 30 minutes east of Durango.

"It was at the airport and he was getting on the airplane and I said, 'Oh don't be such a man! Give your mom a hug. And he gave me a big ole' hug and I told him I loved him," Elaine Redwine said.

"You must have been pretty grateful for that," asked 9NEWS Reporter Kevin Torres.

"I am," Redwine replied. "But I'm still angry that he didn't come back in one piece. And you know, I sent him there. I sent him here. And I no way thought he would never come back to us".

Redwine death will likely remain 'undetermined'

KUSA - The La Plata County coroner says it is unlikely a cause of death will be determined in the Dylan Redwine case. Coroner Jann Smith says she will probably have to rule the cause and manner of death as "undetermined."

The remains of Dylan are still at a Colorado Bureau of Investigations lab, and they may be examined by both the coroner and an anthropologist before an autopsy report is completed.

Dylan was 13 when he disappeared from his dad's southwest Colorado home in Nov. 2012. La Plata County Sheriff's officials say they are investigating his death as a crime. Sheriff's deputies spent five days last week searching an area called Middle Mountain where they found Dylan's bones.

Some of the 13-year-old's remains were discovered on a desolate side of Middle Mountain last week. Along with Redwine's remains, detectives also found the boy's shirt and one of his shoes.

On Wednesday, investigators combed different areas of Middle Mountain with search dogs.

On Wednesday, La Plata County Sheriff's Spokesman Dan Bender told 9NEWS the community should not be alarmed that a killer is on the loose, but he wouldn't elaborate past that.

"I can't discuss matters of the ongoing investigation," Bender said.

Coroner: Remains don't reveal how 13-year-old Dylan Redwine died

LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. - The coroner says her office has been unable to determine how 13-year-old Dylan Redwine died based on the remains recently recovered near the mountain town of Vallecito in southwest Colorado.

Last week, authorities announced DNA confirmed bones recovered during a five-day search in high, rugged terrain off Middle Mountain Road were Dylan's. They were found in a drainage less than 10 miles from his father's home, where he reportedly disappeared.

"So far, the items that have been found are not enough to make an actual cause of death or manner of death," La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith told the Colorado Springs Gazette. The manner of death is a ruling on whether a death is a homicide, accident or suicide.

"Until (the) investigation goes a little further, we may not know exactly what happened to Dylan," Smith added.

My prayers go out to this family... there are no words for the heartbreak and pain they must be enduring. I dearly hope that I am not mistaken and that the father had something to do with this, but for now I am praying that Mark and his family find some peace.

I think the Colorado authorities should hire a team of forensic anthropologists to search the area where Dylan's remains were found, they might be able to find more pieces of the scattered skeletal remains and/or other pieces of evidence that could possibly help with the investigation into Dylan's death, it could be very slow and painstaking work, but it might pay off.

The bracelets read “Hope for Dylan Redwine” and for seven months his family and friends held on to hope that he would come home.

On June 27 the family was notified that the teen had been found but it wasn't the ending they were hoping for. After investigators conducted a search of Middle Mountain Road near Vallecito Lake the La Plata County Sheriff's Office received news back from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that human remains found during that search were that of Dylan.

Now instead of searching for him investigators are now focusing on what happened to him.

“We have no new breaks in the case. We have not labeled anyone as a suspect,” Dan Bender, public information officer for the La Plata County Sheriff's Office, said.

Mark Redwine denies any involvement in the slaying of his once missing son Dylan Redwine. However, his estranged family believes otherwise -- as do thousands of other people who have been watching this case closely since the beginning. In this People Magazine interview, Mark claims he was "on a mission to take Dylan's story nationally," but the history of this case shows that to be a total lie. Not only has Mark been mostly absent during the course of this case, his absence was so stark that it stemmed protests from members of his own community. People stood outside his home with picket signs demanding that he play a bigger role in the search for his son.

Mark claims that he has been in Indianapolis, and that's where he was (conveniently) when officials started searching the Middle Mountain area near his home -- again, where Dylan's remains were ultimately located. He said that he was requested to come back to Colo. to identify "items of interest" in the case of his slain son.

Witnesses say that Mark packed up and left his home not long after identifying items for police. So is he back in Indianapolis where he claimed he was sharing flyers with truck drivers? What reason would he have to do that since he knows now that his son is dead?

Dylan Redwine's Father Denies Involvement in 13-Year-Old's Death

Mark Redwine refused to stop looking for his 13-year-old son Dylan, who went missing from his Colorado home during Thanksgiving week 2012.

While law enforcement searched a nearby mountainside last week, Redwine was in Indianapolis, handing out fliers to truck drivers so they could look for his child on their routes.

"I was on a mission to take Dylan's story nationally," Redwine tells PEOPLE. "I always held out hope that I would see my son again."

Instead, he received a call no parent wants to hear.

"They needed me to identify some items of interest," Redwine says. He drove 1,400 miles back to Colorado in fewer than 30 hours and met with deputies, who handed him a binder full of photos. While searching in Vallecito Lake, Colo., not even 10 miles from Redwine's home, police had discovered five human bones, which they later confirmed were Dylan's.

Dylan Redwine’s dad offers theories about son’s disappearance in videos

DENVER – A month after investigators discovered the remains of missing teen Dylan Redwine, the missing teen’s father is using Facebook to share his thoughts on a possible theory for his son’s disappearance.

On two Dylan Redwine facebook pages, Mark Redwine has posted videos that describe the area where his son’s remains were found. The videos, which are taken by a cell phone, are meant to explore the possibility that Dylan wandered into the woods on his own to access cell service.

“This is all speculative, that if he couldn’t get reception being down in the valley on the road that I live at my house, he thought by trying to get to higher ground he may able to get cell phone service on his cell phone,” said Mark Redwine in a phone interview with FOX31 Denver Tuesday.

No new details in Redwine case

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office declined to release any new information Thursday about the search it conducted Wednesday at the house of Mark Redwine, father of 13-year-old Dylan Redwine, who went missing in November 2012 north of Vallecito Reservoir.

The Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, searched Redwine’s home as part of its nine-monthlong investigation into the disappearance and death of the boy.

“La Plata County Sheriff’s Office has no comment, and will have no comment regarding what was taken during the execution of the search warrant nor regarding the nature of yesterday’s search,” Dan Bender, spokesman for the agency, wrote in a news release.

The Sheriff’s Office has not named any suspects in the case.

This is likely what Mark was referring to when he commented that the detectives left a mess of his property. The items removed from Mark's property indicate that officials believe a murder was committed on the property -- which is highly likely.
