Yeah, I'm thoroughly convinced Jodi didn't expect the 1st Degree conviction.

That gives me a big schitt-eating grin.

let her get some rest, see some docs, tell some lies, get some sympathy

Next week, if she is found to be competent and just manipulating, they will DRUG AND STRAP THAT LYING MURDEROUS BITCH TO A GURNEY OR WHEELCHAIR AND DRAG HER INTO COURT.

Its just the way it is.

You don't get to say no.

I've seen defendants in courts strapped to those orange gurneys with that Hannibal mask on. Arizona is a conservative state. I'm SURE they don't f'k around with these games.

Oh well, another day.

Nobody's talking.
Was it brought up here that JA was 'disturbed' by the verdict reaction from the family and that's why she wants impact statements taped?? C'mon, I know she's had 5 years to pass the bar exam but I highly doubt she's calling ALL the shots (in terms of highly technical jargon like taped impact statements)

Jodi Arias penalty phase postponed; man accused of threatening to blow up courthouse

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

A man holed up in a Phoenix hotel was arrested and accused of threatening to bomb the courthouse where jurors were to begin deciding whether convicted murderer Jodi Arias should get the death penalty, authorities said Thursday.

The penalty phase of Arias' intensely watched trial had been scheduled to begin early Thursday afternoon in Superior Court in Phoenix before the same jurors who convicted her Wednesday of first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of Travis Alexander. But court authorities announced without explanation Thursday that the hearing had been postponed.

Later in the day, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that its deputies had arrested an 18-year-old man who it said had posted threats on Twitter saying he had planted a bomb in the courtroom and planned to die in a shootout with police.

The man was identified as Laquint H. Cherry, described as "a local area resident." He was being held on a felony terrorism charge.

CBS) PHOENIX - One person has been arrested and another is in custody after a sweep at a Phoenix hotel Thursday morning in connection with a courthouse bomb threat tweeted after the Jodi Arias verdict was announced Wednesday afternoon, CBS Phoenix reports.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies detained a man and woman in their 20s at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Value Place Motel in Phoenix.

A sheriff's spokesman confirmed the man was arrested, according to KPHO.

After closed-door hearing with defense, judge delays next phase of Jodi Arias trial

By Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN
updated 8:33 PM EDT, Thu May 9, 2013

(CNN) -- A judge postponed the next phase of the Jodi Arias trial Thursday after, according to a source with knowledge of the proceedings, a closed-door hearing with the defense.

The meeting between defense attorneys, Arias and Judge Sherry Stephens was a sealed hearing, and the reason for the abrupt cancellation of Thursday's court proceedings remains unclear.

The postponement comes a day after jurors found Arias guilty of first-degree murder for killing her ex-boyfriend in 2008.

Jodi Arias Trial: Jury to reconvene next Wednesday to weigh fate of convicted killer

May 9, 2013 4:17 PM
By Erin Donaghue

CBS/AP) PHOENIX - Updated: 455 p.m. ET : The next phase of the Jodi Arias murder trial was postponed Thursday and will continue next Wednesday. Court officials didn't provide a reason for the delay.

~Snipped~

If jurors find the "aggravators" exist, the next step will be the penalty phase during which the panel will recommend either life in prison or death. The process could take several more weeks to wrap up.

Ron Kuby, a criminal defense attorney who is not connected to the case, told Crimesider the defense will need to change their strategy in this next phase of the trial.

"The defense is not going to do the same thing at the penalty phase as it did in the guilt or innocence phase," Kuby said. "It's time to acknowledge the jury's verdict and work on trying to save her life, assuming she wants her life to be saved, and that involves introducing every possible piece of mitigatiing evidence to show that she is not the worst of the worst."

Arias defense: Victim impact statements should be on tape

By Adam Longo

PHOENIX (CBS5) - Attorneys for convicted murderer Jodi Arias have filed a motion with the court requesting that anyone who makes a victim impact statement should do so on tape, rather than live in the courtroom in front of the jury.

Members of a victim's family are typically permitted to address the court and the defendant during the sentencing phase of a case.

The motion asks that all "victim impact evidence be presented via videotape, so as to prevent any unpredictable outbursts that interfere with the rights due Ms. Arias."

Franks, Montgomery push constitutional amendment for victims’ rights

WASHINGTON – After his daughter was shot, execution-style, in 1979 by a gang member out to kill a police officer’s child, John Gillis and his wife were forced to sit outside the courtroom during the killer’s trial.

When a deal was cut letting the killer avoid the death penalty by pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Gillis was not present, nor was he allowed to speak at sentencing.

That is why a federal constitutional amendment is needed to guarantee crime victims have at least as many rights as accused criminals, Gillis told a House committee Thursday.

“Every crime victim in the United States should be guaranteed the right to be present, the right to be treated with dignity and respect and the right to be heard,”said Gillis, now chief of the victim’s services division in the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

I just watched After Dark, and the parting remark made me laugh out loud, which I never do when I am watching TV by myself. I don't remember the bald guy's name, but he did a lot of coverage of the KC's trial. They were discussing what they think will happen Wednesday, and all agreed that Jodi will be found sane enough to go on with the trial, but that sweet bald man said, 'well of course, we will start the day with a sidebar as we have every day for past 4 months'.

Arias Trial Now Turns to Whether She Lives or Dies
By BRIAN SKOLOFF Associated Press
PHOENIX May 10, 2013 (AP)

Snipped:

Despite Arias' comments that she would rather die than be in prison for life, she cannot choose the death penalty. It is up to the jury to recommend a sentence, and the judge will then make the final decision.

If she were sentenced to death, she could decide not to appeal to speed up the process, but it could still take years to play out as she lives under punishing conditions on death row. The state Department of Corrections says Arizona death row inmates have little contact with the outside world and only get to leave their solitary cells for two hours a day, three times a week. They get three showers a week.

The sheriff's office said no more interviews will be allowed with Arias now that she is on suicide watch.

Jodi Arias trial update: Elizabeth Johnson’s lawyer Marc Victor talks Arias

By: abc15.com staff

With the guilty verdict in, the next decision for the Jodi Arias jury is to determine whether she should be eligible for the death penalty.

"The question whether this is a death case is more difficult than whether this is first degree," said Valley defense attorney Marc Victor. Victor has worked on several high profile trials.

"What is going to be looked at is whether Travis Alexander suffered and whether she intended for him to suffer," Victor said.

18thcenturylady wrote:The interview Jodi gave last night is disgusting and disturbing in the extreme. She is just as Dr. De Marte described her, and basically acts exactly as the Dr. stated.
She is self serving and sickeningly manipulative. She is also exactly as Juan stated in his closing. She blames everyone else, is still vilifying Travis, and refuses to show any responsibility or remorse of any kind. She speaks in a 'poor me' little girl voice and cries only for herself.
Jodi is truly her own worst enemy, and a very dangerous person.
I thank God for this verdict and hope that Jodi lives the life she deserves until she dies, and then is condemned to eternal hell. I hope the media and the American people will shun her and not purchase her art, or make movies about her, etc. As with Casey Anthony, WE DON'T WANT TO SEE ANY MORE.
I was very glad to hear that the Alexander family already had a wonderful attorney who is now taking on their wrongful death suit, and is protecting them and their interests.

Right - everyone said they refused to buy anything promoting Casey, and from what I remember, no one did put out anything because people said they'd heard enough. As in GO AWAY.

Grandma is walking and even stepping over curbs! It is a miracle, I tell you!

The more I got to thinking about JA, her mother's rude behavior in the court, how her mother tried to sell forged letters trashing Travis's reputation, her aunt's giggling and chatting in court, her aunt having "hearing" problems, her "dying" father (reported by JA to have heart problems, on dialysis for diabetes, on chem for cancer) and NOW?????? Grandma in her wheelchair? Well, we KNOW her father is actively running a restaurant called Daddy O's, her grandmother is hopping over her curbs....

I can only conclude: Their "little nut" didn't fall TOO far from that family tree!

What a bunch of fake, phoney, grifters! Users ALL! THIS is the reason JA is so screwed up! She inherited it and then acquired it from her environment! Bad choices come from bad examples!!!

No. I have no sympathy nor even pity for this evil family of users.

PS. I wonder. Do they have handicap placards for their cars? Do they park in Handicap Only slots? Someone should notify Travis family and the prosecutor ASAP!

I am puzzled by this family. Her mom was appropriate in the interrogation room, and then in court, just did not seem to be connecting. Almost as if she was the role model for Jodi's changeability. She definitely seems to have more of a clue as to what is appropriate and acceptable, but I wonder what was behind her and her sister's behavior in court. I wonder if they actually believed Jodi or they just didn't care.

Did her mom actually receive those letters? I haven't heard much about that story, and I thought someone at the jail had found/intercepted them. But I could be completely wrong. If her mom was willing to be complicit in that scam, that says so much about why Jodi is as she is.

I heard grandma arrived Thursday back in the wheelchair.

Sounds like a whole family of lowlifes.

Judge would not allow it this late in trial history. Have to have a cause for the action as well; must be reasonable. JA FOUGHT to keep Nurmi so that would kind of nullify the request. (Heck. Even Nurmi tried to get off! He wanted to take his money and RUN but the judge told him Dec 2012 he could not do that.)

I don't think Jodi is trying to get jurors disqualified, as that is just not going to happen at this point. I am sure these jurors are onto this girl's tricks. I have learned that yes, at this point Nurmi and Wilmot could withdraw, especially after what Jodi did to them with regard to that disaster of an interview on verdict day. She would simply have other attorneys appointed to her for these last phases of the trial. That is a VERY REAL possibility at this point.

Here is my take on what happened yesterday, but first I want to comment on the above. JVM interviewed a couple last night outside the courthouse. Their 20 yr. old son was murdered, and Juan prosecuted the killer. There was an M1 conviction. They said that the defense attorneys tried to get a motion passed ordering that they give their impact statements on video---NO GO! THAT DEFENSE MOTION WAS SUMMARILY DENIED!
They gave their statements in person.
I don't believe for one minute that Juan or this judge are going to let the defense win that one, so I hope you all don't worry about it.

I am guessing, but I think because of that squirrelly interview Jodi gave, WHAM! She was put on suicide watch, and all her worst fears came true, lol! No bra, "padded" room, etc. I honestly think SHE THOUGHT she was the martyred star of her own movie, getting the word out there even AFTER THE CONVICTION, that Travis was a pedophile, etc.
Her game, and make no mistake---it was a game, backfired on her and now she's without Twitter, and in a psych ward in a different prison instead of back with her fan club at Estrella! I think she had visions of herself returning to prison Wed. evening to her adoring groupies, and that it came as a shock to find she was stripped of privileges and was now suffering what she would see as the INDIGNITY of being in the loony ward! LOL, we can at least get a little satisfaction from that!

I believe court was cancelled yesterday because the judge has issued an order for a COMPETENCY evaluation. I don't know why this wasn't done yesterday AM before everyone came to court, but that could just be the typical '3 stooges disorganization' this defense team has exhibited in the past.
I did hear that THE REASON COURT IS NOT RESUMING UNTIL MAY 15TH IS A SCHEDULING ISSUE, and NOT because the evaluation would take long.
Baez ordered the same thing for CA when she threw a fit about a plea deal. The evaluation for competency is a low standard for defendants, and there is no doubt that Jodi will be deemed fit to continue with the rest of the phases in the trial. This evaluation will probably be done and over with today.
For some reason, Juan, or Dr. Horn, or the defense attorneys have scheduling issues that made it impossible to continue with the aggravation phase until next Wednesday.

All that having been said, I don't think Jodi is done with her histrionics and dramatics. I think she will be insulting and hard to take when she gets up in court to pontificate and proclaim her innocence!

I know that Jodi will HAVE to sit and listen to the Alexander family, as per the victims bill of rights, and I think that is wonderful, but I am wondering if THEY HAVE TO LISTEN TO HER!
Honestly, if it were me, after I had addressed the court, and when it was time for Jodi to get up and have her 'final say', I would calmly walk out of the courtroom!
I would LOVE to know if there is any law preventing the Alexanders from doing just that.
I think they have taken enough from that sicko, and I think they should do that if it was allowed.

I read this. It clearly states this is up to the "court's discretion". The Alexanders have suffered mightily at the hands of Jodi Arias and have always demonstrated class and restraint in the courtroom. Even when the verdict was read, there was no obvious or inappropriate outburst. The defense doesn't have a leg to stand on when it comes to inferring that they will cause a scene during victim impact statements.
This is an action taken because the defendant is a coward and a manipulator, and doesn't want to hear about the devastation her actions have caused.
I am going to stick my neck out here and say there is NO WAY this motion will be granted. Another defense attorney tried this in a case that Juan prosecuted as well, and they were denied, and the victims got up and gave their statements in person.
I believe the judge in this case is firmly committed to giving the Alexander family their day in court to express their feelings in person. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT WHAT THEY SAY WILL BE DONE WITH GRACE AND CLASS AND WILL BE HEARTFELT, MOVING, AND MOST APPROPRIATE.
(if there are any "unpredictable outbursts" they would be from Ms. Arias---Oh, too damn bad!)

now I guess I should share some sad news

the bodies of my friends two nephews were discovered last night..the third boy was found alive in the car that was on the Amber Alert. That's pretty much all the police are sharing right now and my friend has only requested alot of prayers.

Oh my God...Carla, I am so sorry. This is terrible. I just can't believe all the evil out there sometimes...I guess that's why I was following this trial and wanted that M1 verdict---one more sick twisted person off the streets...

Having a narcissistic sister in law just like Jodi (minus the stabby part thank God) this is Jodi in true narcissitic fashion. Anytime you confront this type of personality it turns to a health issue and manipulation. In their mind how can you treat them bad because they are suffering from ( insert whatever ailment here) and they know the rest of us have a concious and would feel terrible about treating someone bad if they were indeed sick, which in these cases they are not. I do believe the interview was preset by Jodi but she was thinking of a different outcome. It was supposed to be her "I told you I was innocent" interview but instead she used it to try to have the last word since she was convicted. In a few weeks she will be gone in prison forever forgotten by all of us. Come back from that Jodi.

Carla I am so sorry for your friend... that is horrible... what the hell is wrong with people? It's bad enough that you're killing another person but it's a child (until your around 25 you're still a child to me)... In this case a real child and to have to bury 2 children at the same time... So sad...

Several people elsewhere have suggested that Juan should see this. I feel sure he probably is aware of it already, but I just emailed it to him at his office.
I sure don't mean to be a pesty busybody, which is what I said, but this tape shows an entirely different Jodi than the one with the red nose and fake tears in the courtroom. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE the jury needs to see that a very calm, calculating, manipulative Jodi is orchestrating what is going on right now, and playing these jurors for fools. I thought this phone call was more telling than the stupid interview, and I hope Juan can use it in court!

thank you all for your kind words.. I am deeply saddened by this tragic event but I did not know Blake and Blaine Romes or their parents. I am just a friend of their great-aunt..she is a VERY strong spiritual woman and so I have no doubt she is holding her own and doing an excellent job in supporting her grief stricken family.I got her back when and if she needs me.
I still don't know any details..the rumors are horrific tho and the piss poor reporting had me ready to blow last night. I got up this morn determined to clean n bake away my heartache and so that is what I am doing.

side note..it is raining and fence dude is out there using some sort of electric saw!!!!! Shocked

You didn't miss anything not seeing the interview Carla---Just would have made you madder than a wet hen! Honestly, I think THIS lil' bit of audio is much more damning for chica! It is so obvious that all her so-called tears in court were fake, as well as her demeanor during the interview, where there was more of the red nose and one tear rolling down her cheek!
I HOPE that Juan can play this in court for the next phases of the trial. To me it was shocking. She is so cold, calculating, and so obviously had planned everything she did to manipulate this jury. They need to hear this, and know once and for all that she is 'playing' them...

Carla I'm hoping to have my fence done this weekend... I get to play with my flowers while they do "man's" work... lol

I feel better knowing most of the delay was Dr. H's schedule... I can imagine their closed door meeting with the lawyers... KN to JSS, did you see what she did? did you see that interview last night when she completely underminded us? we argued with her not to but she set it up prior to the verdict. She does what she wants, she doesn't care about what we say. How are we supposed to fix this mess now? She's told the world she'd rather have the DP then life in prison and continued to bad mouth everyone. She never showed remorse, never said sorry... If she looked bad before she looks like the devil herself now. I don't want to deal with her anymore, i did my part JW can have her.... All the while JM is snickering under his breathe thanking God he works for the good side and doesn't have to deal with that... When JSS asked JM about it he says Oh make no mistake we're bringing this in during the penalty phase along with the other 3 times she's mentioned the DP for either herself personally or TA's killer which she knew was her... lol can you imagine the joy JM had to keep in over this stupid girl? lol

you have to wonder what it was like prior to trial yesterday when they got to meet with her for the 1st time after the interview... what words were exchanged? I wonder if they did want off and i'm sure they asked for that if JSS said let's get her tested 1st and if she's OK then yes leave, she did it out of spite and she'll be capable of helping the next lawyers...
