A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on kidnapping charges in Washington state stemming from an attempted abduction of a toddler that was caught on video and thwarted by the baby's young siblings and other witnesses, officials said on Wednesday.

The teenager was taken into custody following several days of interviews, DNA testing and a search warrant on his home in Sprague, southwest of Spokane, where the kidnapping occurred, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said.

He is accused of grabbing the 22-month-old boy from his stroller in a city park in broad daylight on Sunday and running off with the baby, in an incident caught on surveillance video by a local grocery store.

DA ORDERED OFF TRIAL BY JUDGE:
Misconduct alleged

Beauty salon murders, Seal Beach, CA

Judge removes OC DA from 'salon murderer' case over handling of jailhouse informants (updated)

"....An Orange County judge on Thursday removed the Orange County District Attorney's office from continuing to prosecute the man who gunned down eight people at a Seal Beach hair salon in 2011 because of allegations that sheriff’s deputies perjured themselves and withheld information about jailhouse informants.

In an unprecedented ruling, Judge Thomas Goethals dismissed the entire DA’s office and Sheriff’s Department from the criminal case against mass murder defendant Scott Dekraai, who pleaded guilty to the shooting at the Salon Meritage hair boutique last year.

Goethals said in his written ruling that the "District Attorney has a conflict of interest in this case which has actually deprived this defendant of due process in the past.” ...."

Orange County D.A. is removed from Scott Dekraai murder trial

In a stinging rebuke, a criminal court judge removed the Orange County district attorney's office from one of its highest-profile murder cases, saying prosecutors had violated mass shooter Scott Dekraai's rights by repeatedly failing to turn over important evidence.

"Certain aspects of the district attorney's performance in this case might be described as a comedy of errors but for the fact that it has been so sadly deficient," Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals wrote in his ruling. "There is nothing funny about that."

Goethals, though, declined to remove the death penalty as a potential punishment for Dekraai, a former tugboat captain who gunned down his ex-wife and seven others at a Seal Beach salon in 2011.
Certain aspects of the district attorney's performance in this case might be described as a comedy of errors but for the fact that it has been so sadly deficient. - Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals

The judge ruled Thursday that prosecutors had shown a "chronic failure" to comply with orders to turn over evidence to the defense, and had so far deprived Dekraai — who has pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder — of his right to a fair penalty-phase trial. ...."

"....The judge assigned the case to the state attorney general's office, which now will handle the penalty phase in which jurors will decide whether Dekraai should be put to death....."

Foul Play Feared In Disappearance Of 22-Year-Old Woman In San Bernardino

March 10, 2015 11:39 PM

Sahray Astina Barber

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Officials are asking for the public’s help finding a 22-year-old woman, reported missing in San Bernardino.

Sahray Astina Barber was last seen leaving for work around 6 a.m. Monday from her home in the 1500 block of West Northpark Boulevard, across the street from the Cal State San Bernardino campus, the San Bernardino Police Department reported.

~Snipped~

Her disappearance is especially alarming given that there were three attacks on women at the CSUSB campus last week. Those attacks included an attempted rape and an attempted abduction.

“We are concerned, because those things have happened in a very close proximity here,” San Bernardino Police Lt. Rich Lawhead said.

~Snipped~

Anyone with information on Barber’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Det. Dan Han at (909) 384-5623 or the San Bernardino Police Department Investigations Bureau at (909) 384-5615. Please be sure to reference case number 2015-26028.

Police in San Bernardino are looking for Sahray Barber. The 22-year-old woman has been missing for longer than three days now, after she was last seen leaving her apartment on her way to work on Monday morning. KTLA News reports that police have deemed her case a suspicious disappearance. However, there has been no evidence to indicate that she is the victim of foul play. Nonetheless, the recent crime surrounding the area where she vanished creates reason for concern.

Family of Sahray Barber said she may have been wearing this shirt when she disappeared.

There was no sign of a struggle in the disappearance of a woman from an apartment complex near Cal State San Bernardino earlier this week, police said Wednesday.

Sahray Barber, 22, has been missing since Monday morning, when she was expected to take a bus to her job at The Art Institute, but never showed up.

Several of Barber’s belongings were found in some bushes near the front gate of her apartment building in the 1500 block of West Northpark Boulevard (map), but there did not appear to be any indication of a struggle, according to Lt. Rich Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.

SAN BERNARDINO >> Sahray Barber’s classmates know her as the nice librarian who regularly wore a green cape.

On Friday night, a couple hundred people attended a candlelight vigil for Barber — who went missing Monday — outside The Art Institute of California, Inland Empire, where she went to school and worked.

Keith Vines met Barber at the library and the two developed a friendship over the past year or so.

“She was a cool girl, down to earth, pretty quiet,” Vines said at the vigil.

That same white car was then seen in the family's driveway, according to AJ's father. The college freshman, who was home on spring break from Longwood University, had recently had problems with someone she knew.

"She was telling and texting her cousin and her friends she was having these issues with him and he wouldn't leave her alone," Wesley Hadsell told Dateline. "She was scared of a situation."

North Carolina man has been arrested and charged for the murders of Food Network Star contestant Cristie Schoen Codd and her husband Joseph Codd.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Jason Owens is in custody at the Buncombe County Detention Facility and has been charged with two counts of felony first-degree murder, one felony count of breaking and/or entering, larceny after breaking and entering and one count of murder of an unborn child. This is not the first time Owens has been accused of murder. In 2000, he was a primary suspect in the disappearance and presumed killing of Zebb Quinn.

Pregnant Food Network Star, Husband Murdered

Cristie Schoen Codd, husband Joseph disappear

(Newser)  – A pregnant Food Network star and her husband have disappeared, and a man has been charged with their murders. Cristie Schoen Codd, 38, and Joseph Codd, 45, were reported missing by family members Sunday, according to the Hollywood Reporter; deputies found their pets and their vehicles still at their North Carolina home. Fellow North Carolinian Robert Jason Owens, 36, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and a count of murder of an unborn child, plus charges related to breaking or entering and stealing a laptop, jewelry, and a gun. Authorities believe the Codds died on Thursday, but won't comment on the couple's remains. Owens was a contractor the Codds hired to work on their home.

"He had done some odd jobs for them," the local sheriff tells the Asheville Citizen-Times, but he notes that investigators are still working to determine a motive. Owens was also a "primary suspect" in the disappearance of another local 18-year-old in 2000, though he was never charged; authorities won't comment on his connection to that case. As Cristie Schoen, Codd was a finalist on the Food Network Star competition in its eighth season in 2012. She had also worked as a stunt performer, a location chef, and head caterer for some big movies, and in minor acting roles, NBC News reports; her husband was a Hollywood grip.

Woman who spent 22 years on death row has murder case tossed

PHOENIX — A judge on Monday dismissed the murder case against an Arizona woman who spent more than 20 years on death row in the 1989 killing of her 4-year-old son.

Debra Jean Milke hugged her supporters and sobbed as she exited the Phoenix courtroom. Judge Rosa Mroz ended the case after prosecutors lost their last appeal last week.

Milke was convicted of murder in 1990 in the death of her son, Christopher. Authorities say Milke dressed him in his favorite outfit and told him he was going to see Santa Claus at a mall in December 1989. He was then taken into the desert near Phoenix by two men and shot in the back of the head.

~Snipped~

The federal appeals court threw out Milke's conviction and death sentence, arguing prosecutors knew about Phoenix police Detective Armando Saldate's record of misconduct but didn't disclose it. Multiple court rulings in other cases said the now-retired officer either lied under oath or violated suspects' rights during interrogations.

Mother who spent 22 years on death row is finally cleared of killing her four-year-old son - after she was convicted by cop with a history of lying

. Debra Jean Milke had been free on bail since her conviction was overturned in 2013
. Maricopa County judge dismissed her case with prejudice - meaning charges cannot be filed again
. Convicted of the 1989 murder of her son Christopher, who was shot four times in the back of the head by two friends
. Sentenced to die based largely on the testimony of Detective Armando Saldate, who claimed she confessed to him
Saldate was later discredited

Debra Milke, pictured Monday in court, had murder charges against her dismissed - 25 years after she was convicted and sentenced to die

All charges against Debra Jean Milke were dismissed today -  25 years after she was convicted and sentenced to die for the brutal murder of her four-year-old son.

Milke was released from jail in 2013 after 22 years on Arizona's death row, but still faced the possibility of a retrial and remained free on bail with an electronic monitoring bracelet.

On Monday, Maricopa County Superior Court before Judge Rosa Mroz found that there was not enough evidence to take the case against Milke to trial. She ordered the charges dismissed with prejudice - meaning she cannot be re-tried.

East Hampton Man Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter In Girlfriend's Death

By Christine Dempsey and David Moran

Jini Barnum's decomposing body was found Sept. 9, 2012 in a shallow grave deep in the woods of Glastonbury.

MIDDLETOWN — An East Hampton man pleaded guilty in Superior Court Tuesday to manslaughter and tampering with evidence in 2012 death of his girlfriend, Jini Barnum, a mother of two.

Anthony Garofalo faces the possibility of 25 years in prison.

His plea was under the Alford doctrine, which means he doesn't admit guilt, but acknowledges the state has enough evidence to secure a conviction at trial.

Barnum's decomposing body was found Sept. 9, 2012 in a shallow grave deep in the woods of Glastonbury -- an area with which Garofalo was familiar, according to the warrant for his arrest. Barnum, 30, died of "traumatic asphyxia by neck compression," it states.

Garofalo reported Barnum, 30, missing on July 29, the warrant says. He said Barnum came home drunk and they had an argument that did not become physical. She walked away, he told police.

Police interviewed neighbors, who told them they heard two separate arguments that weekend, one outside the apartment building at 23 Main St. on July 27 and the second inside the couple's second-floor apartment on the night of July 28.

It definitely sounded physical, a first-floor neighbor told police.

Police have arrested the boyfriend of a murdered East Hampton woman who went missing last July.

East Hampton police arrested Anthony Garofalo, 38, on Monday and charged him with the murder of his girlfriend, Jini Barnum.

Barnum was last seen alive July 28, 2012 after an argument with Garofalo, according to police. According to investigators, Garofalo reported Barnum missing the next day.

Barnum, 30, was a mother of two, including a 6-week-old baby when she disappeared. A woman found Barnum's remains in a shallow grave while walking her dog along Windham Road in Glastonbury on Sept. 9.

Flint, Michigan: Abuse cases

Alleged torture of 2-year-old highlights rare charge in child abuse cases

By Sarah Schuch | sschuch@mlive.com
on March 27, 2015 at 5:50 AM

"....In 2013, there were 1,963 confirmed victims of child abuse in Genesee County with 1,050 of those being under the age of 5, according to information from Whaley Children's Center. Cases of child abuse paired with torture are rare in the county, however, said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton....."

".....One case of child abuse is too much. We have too many cases of child abuse in this community," he said. "It's infrequent that we also have a count of torture. But it does happen."

Prosecutors allege the 2-year-old boy had his face rubbed into urine-stained carpet and Icy Hot balm smeared on his groin after a toilet-training accident, according to court records.

When the boy was eventually taken to Hurley Medical Center following the alleged abuse, doctors discovered he had suffered fractures to his clavicle, arm, shoulder blade and sternum that were at least a month old.

Joshua Robert Demott, 44, was arraigned Monday, March 23, in Flint District Court on torture, first-degree child abuse and first-degree child abuse in the presence of another child charges after Flint police responded to Hurley Medical Center for a report of suspected child abuse.

One of the other two cases that included torture charges included one where Donovan Lamar Haynes, 23, was sentenced July 21 to 18 years, 9 months to 40 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder for the beating death of his daughter, Ti'Airra Woodward.

It was claimed that Haynes beat the girl in an attempt to turn her gay in hopes that she would avoid men like him, who had a history of treating women poorly. Adult human bite marks were also found all over the girl's body, police said....."

Flint, Michigan
Child abuser Joshua Demott, had a criminal history of violence:

http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2015/03/flint_man_accused_of_torturing.html#incart_related_stories

From comments:

"...2010Flint 4 hours ago

In 2012 DeMott was sentenced to only 330 days in jail and 3 years probation for repeatedly beating and torturing a mentally disabled person. The judge, prosecutor, and anyone else who approved that sentence should be held accountable for this child's injuries as well. They don't hesitate to sentence drug dealers to several-year sentences, but those who abuse the vulnerable are repeatedly put back on the streets. A perfect example of this is the light sentence (probabtion) given to Vamerolyn and Mary Chapman, who were charged with the first-degree felony murder of a 71 year old woman placed in their care. However, they were offered a plea deal for pleading "no contest" to second degree vulnerable adult abuse.

Abuse runs rampant in this county, frequently repeated by the same offenders, because prosecutors and judges agree to release these savages back into the community to circulate freely...."

Is there an end in sight?

Alyssa Gilmore, daughter of former secretary of the oval office Whitney Gilmore, claims that her mother had an affair with Bill Clinton between 1998 and 2001.

According to World News Daily Report:

“I know Bill Clinton is my father. I have many pictures of my mother and him and I know they were in love. He even gave me présents for Christmas and my birthdays when I was a kid, before he left my mother. I have spent many years writing him letters and calling him, hoping he would come back in my life. At first, he would write back and we spoke on the phone regularly, but he doesn’t even answer anymore. I just want him to take his responsibilities and recognize that he is my father, that’s all.”

Judge Henri Watkins of the Arkansas state court quickly decided that Gilmore had enough evidence to move forward. He ruled that presentation of evidence will begin next week on March 19...."

I worked with one of those women. She was chaste and faithful to her husband but when Clinton met her at Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottsville VA on his pass through VA on his first presidential campaign she was a producer for Public TV and was doing on site work with our camera crews for the live broadcast of the candidate that night. He had one of his hangers on come to her before the broadcast telling her that he would like to have some “Personal” time with her later that evening. That he was staying at XXXXXXX and to please visit him.

This gal had the good sense to not say anything. She looked at me when the guy left and asked me if I really believed what he was asking her to do. (This gal was a real Looker) I told her I believed it as I had heard from some friends in NC that something similar had happened when he went through there.

She helped us all pack up and left with us that night as we passed by his hotel she looked over at me and just laughed knowing only the two of us knew what this idiot was expecting for tonight....."

Account to aid children of Goodyear murder victim raises $3,200

A Goodyear police spokeswoman said early Friday there were seven children in the home when the stabbing occurred. The kids were immediately removed form the home at 168th Drive and Watkins Street and were being cared for Friday morning by relatives, said Lisa Kutis, a Goodyear police spokeswoman...."

From a time when we were terrorized by the kidnapping of a bus full of school children in Chowchilla, CA:

James Schoenfeld

".....One of three kidnappers was granted parole 39 years after hijacking a school bus full of children and burying them alive in infamous caper inspired by the film Dirty Harry.

The state Board of Parole Hearings granted parole to 63-year-old James Schoenfeld on the 20th time it considered the possibility of releasing the California man, the Fresno Bee reported.

Details of the decision to release Schoenfeld were not immediately available.

Schoenfield abducted the children and then kept them 'buried alive' in an underground trailer while he and his co-conspirators negotiated a $5million ransom. ..."

"....brothers Richard and James Schoenfeld and Frederick Woods, stormed onto the vehicle brandishing guns and forced Ray to the back of the bus....."

".....I wrote that they buried me alive, they stole my childhood and caused me immense emotional pain over the years. It affected my life, my parents’ lives and my children’s lives.'

'For me, it’s having to deal with hatred and anger toward other human beings, and that’s a struggle that almost 40 years later I still have to deal with,' she added.

'Until recently I slept with a night light. I have anxiety attacks when I’m in a confined space, and it’s a problem living in the South when we have tornado warnings and we have to take cover in storm shelters. … They took away my ability to be free.' ..."

Prince Andrew and Epstein relationship:

"....Allegations that a 17-year-old was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew have been sensationally erased after his accuser Virginia Roberts' bid to join a lawsuit was rejected by a U.S. judge.

Roberts had claimed she was ‘loaned’ to sex offender financier Jeffrey Epstein’s wealthy friends after being groomed over a number of years by him.

She also claimed she had sex with Andrew on three separate occasions, including taking part in an orgy on Epstein’s private Caribbean island.

Today a federal judge in Miami rejected a bid by Roberts and another unnamed woman to join a high-profile sexual abuse lawsuit involving Epstein and ordered the scandalous sex allegations against The Duke of York and a prominent U.S. lawyer be struck out from the court record.

Scroll down for video ...."

What is going on? Is it something in the water? Arizona, again, grabs the headlines:

BEANES, BERNADETTE

Valley mom wants tougher sentence for woman accused in murder for hire plot
April 16, 2015

"...The recorded conversation is chilling.

Officer: "You want me to take care of all four?"

Beanes: "Yes. It's $5,000 a body, and it's going to be paid $20,000 total when the job is completely done."

The undercover officer pressed Beanes several times about whether she really wanted to kill a child.

Officer: "You're sure about that?"

Beanes: "Yeah."

Officer: "Cause he's a kid."

Beanes: "I know."

Officer: "So, you don't give a f*** how I do it? Stab them? Kill them?"

Beanes: "However you want. You paint your masterpiece."

"Her way of thinking was, no witnesses - no case,” said D'Lynn Celis.

In a separate proposed plea deal, in the murder for hire case, Beanes is looking at three charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Both cases combined, she faces a minimum of 30.5 years behind bars....."

Amber Alert: Boy abducted when father's car stolen from driveway

By Joseph Serna
April 20, 2015, 7:04 AM

Authorities in Northern California issued an Amber Alert for a boy who was inside his father’s car sleeping when it was stolen early Monday in Fairfield. The California Highway Patrol issued the alert for the following counties: Solano, Yolo, Contra Costa, Sacramento and Napa.

The boy, Brock Guzman, 8, and the car vanished about 4:45 a.m. when the father was dropping him off at his mother’s house, said Fairfield police Officer Kathryn McCormick.

The boy had fallen asleep on the ride back to his mother’s house, McCormick said. When they arrived, the father said he left the child inside the car with the engine running while he went inside for a moment.

That’s when someone jumped in and drove off, police said.

The vehicle is a 2001 silver Toyota Corolla with license plate 5BWF072. The boy is described as 5-foot-1, 110 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt, blue pants and possibly a robe.

Anyone with information on the boy's whereabouts should immediately call 911.

MISSING IN AMERICA

Alma Del Real

It's been just over a week since Alma Del Real vanished.

"Alma could be your sister, part of your family, anybody in your family." Susana Lagunas, Alma's aunt, said at a vigil Friday. "It's not only affecting me as a sister, as a niece, as a mother, it's affecting every single one of us."

Developing Stories - Page 4 Alma3_8b117778a56626f30b3c62dd83b3f05e.nbcnews-ux-720-900

The 22-year-old disappeared after spending a night out on April 12th at Studio Rumba 205 on South Main Street in South Bend, Indiana. A friend reportedly dropped Alma off at her house around 3:30 that morning. "And that's it. She vanished after that. Hasn't contact anybody, hasn't been on social media, hasn't made any phone calls," Capt. Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department told NBC affiliate WNDU.

Detectives say Alma's cell phone has been dead or turned off since the day she went missing, which is a major red flag for her family. Alma's aunt Susana Lagunas says her niece was always on her phone, either texting or checking her Facebook.

"We're hoping that she's alive and that she will come home. And we are very scared that the opposite is true," Lagunas said.

Alma Del Real is described as 5'5" tall, weighing 137 lbs, with long black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing light blue, skinny, high-wasted pants, a black crop top, and a tan leather jacket. If you have any information or have seen Del Real, please call the South Bend Police Department at (574) 235-9201.

UPDATE:

Body found in Lake Ontario identified as Max Maisel, son of ESPN writer

USA Today Sports

Developing Stories - Page 4 AAbowRh

The body found Friday in Lake Ontario is that of Rochester Institute of Technology student Max Maisel, 21, who had been missing since Feb. 22 and was last seen around the Charlotte Pier.

The cause of Maisel's death is still unclear, Rochester police said Monday.

A fisherman spotted the body about 7:30 p.m. floating in the water about 200 yards from the Coast Guard station off Saint Paul Boulevard in Irondequoit.

Maisel's family released a statement along with the identification, thanking recovery teams and the medical examiner. Max is the son of Ivan Maisel, a writer for ESPN.

"We knew this day would come, and we are relieved that it has," reads the note signed by Maisel's father, Ivan, and Ivan Maisel's wife, Meg Murray. "But it is merely the postscript to our sad story. We have mourned Max from the night that the Rochester police called to tell us he was missing. There was no other plausible solution to the puzzle he left behind.

"Now we must get on with living with this hole in our lives."

Author Ann Rule Was Abused, Ripped Off By Her Sons, Cops Say

Bestselling true crime author Ann Rule was bilked out of more than $100,000 by two of her sons, one of whom demanded money while she "cowered in her wheelchair," authorities said.

Authorities were alerted on March 2, when Rule's son-in-law, Glen Scorr, told the prosecutor's office he suspected his mother-in-law was being financially exploited by her two sons

My guesses would be that:

  1. The requested laptop either didn't have a wi-fi interface on it or there's no way to get a wi-fi signal in the jury room if it did have one.  I can't imagine the court would give them a laptop that had Internet access (but I could be wrong!).

  2. Maybe the jurors weren't given a whiteboard or chalkboard to use to keep track of their thoughts and wanted to use Word and Excel for that.  Much easier to edit vs. paper/pencil.

  3. The laptop with the evidence on it would likely be write-locked so they couldn't modify anything.

May be a mini-documentary. It certainly draws upon some well known names:

True Story

".....The lowest form of human being on the planet is the man or woman who takes another life — and yet some killers become despicable rock stars of a sort.

Ted Bundy
is far better known than any of his victims. Charles Manson is world-famous. Scott Peterson and Joran van der Sloot have received multiple marriage proposals. Lyle Menendez was married on the day he was sentenced for the murder of his parents, was eventually divorced and has since married another prison groupie.

Sick.

James Franco taps into that unsettling mindset with his compelling performance as the conniving and manipulative albeit charming sociopath Christian Longo in “True Story,” which is based on a true story about one of the more bizarre journalist-defendant alliances in modern annals.

Directed with detached style by Rupert Goold, “True Story” begins where a conventional crime thriller would end: the arrest of Christian Longo in Mexico. Accused of murdering his wife and three young children in unspeakably gruesome fashion, Longo had been on the run and posing as New York Times journalist Michael Finkel...."

(Add your own names to the list: Jodi Arias, Oscar P., Julie Schnecter, Grant Hayes, Shayna Huber, Jerice Hunter, etc. )

".....Prosecutors called Longo an ice-cold, calculating serial liar who grew tired of his family. The defense, however, contended Longo was broken by extreme financial hardships — and that he was not responsible for two of the deaths.

Though Longo faced the death penalty if convicted, he pleaded guilty to murdering his wife and youngest child before his trial even began on March 10, 2003. In a bizarre move, Longo admitted to Mary Jane and Madison's murders without any plea deal being offered by prosecutors...."

Last night, I watched the 48 Hours show on Longo.
From the info shared, the viewer could see how Longo's actions escalated in the downward spiral over time. His actions based upon his perceived needs became more desperate. He certainly did not have the job skills to support the life he wanted to live.
Of interest, the author of the book is the same reporter Longo stole identity of. He, too, over the course of time, was sucked in by the charm Longo presented...

Shivers. I am reminded of Jodi Arias. She is more conniving and deadly than most of us could ever suppose. A true con artist.

Windermere serial rape suspect's lawyer drops case
Police search for sexual assault victims

"....Leslie Sweet, the lawyer who jumped in to defend the man Windermere police call a serial rapist, tells Local 6 she quit the case on Friday.

Sweet would not explicitly explain her decision, but told Local 6 reporter Evan Lambert she got a text from 48-year-old Darryl Patterson Friday morning and "does not play games."

Meanwhile, investigators say several more women have come forward accusing Patterson of rape or attempted rape. The new allegations come after police named Patterson a suspect in several other rape cases Thursday.

Police say it began with a review of a previously dropped rape investigation from 2012. Police Chief David Ogden admits the department he hadn't yet run at the time, did sloppy police work and closed the case prematurely.

Ogden says this month another woman came forward alleging Patterson tried to drug and rape her, but she was able to get away. That's when police began building a case...."

A McLennan County deputy stands guard near a group of bikers in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks restaurant Sunday, May 17, 2015, in Waco, Texas. Waco Police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton told KWTX-TV there were "multiple victims" after gunfire erupted between rival biker gangs at the restaurant.

WACO, Texas (AP) — A shootout among rival biker gangs at a popular Texas restaurant left nine people dead and 18 others injured, a police spokesman said on Sunday, sending panicked patrons and bystanders fleeing for safety.

The violence erupted shortly after noon at a busy Waco marketplace along Interstate 35 that draws a large lunchtime crowd. Waco, Texas police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said eight people died at the scene of the shooting at Twin Peaks restaurant and another person at a hospital. He told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the nine killed were all members of biker gangs.

Another 18 people were taken to hospitals with injuries that include stab and gunshot wounds. Some victims are being treated for both, he said.

Provo police released new information Thursday as the search continued for 26-year-old Elizabeth Elena Laguna Salgado, who has been missing for almost a month.

Salgado was last seen leaving the Nomen Global Language Center at 384 West Center Street, where she is a student, around 2:00 p.m. on April 16. She was believed to be walking toward her apartment, about two miles north of the school, but she never made it there.

Salgado has not made contact with her family, friends, or employer since then, which relatives say is unusual.

According to her family, Salgado had recently returned from a Mormon religious mission and had only been in Provo for about a month. Most of her family lives in Mexico, but her parents have traveled to Utah to help search for her.

In a statement on the Provo Police Department Facebook page Thursday, authorities listed many of the steps they have taken in their investigation so far.

As of May 13, there were 30 members of the police department actively investigating Salgado's disappearance. Police estimated over 3,500 hours have been spent working on the case, and they have investigated over 118 tips from the public.

Police said in the statement that they have taken additional actions in the effort to locate Salgado, but they cannot disclose them "to preserve the integrity of the investigation and to protect Elena."

Elizabeth Elena Laguna Salgado is described as approximately 5'4" tall, 120 to 130 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes. When last seen, she was wearing a denim jacket, blue jeans, and knee-high boots, and she was carrying a denim handbag with red straps.

Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the Provo Police Department at (801) 852-6210. A reward of up to $15,000 has been offered in the case.

WASHINGTON — A man convicted of killing Washington intern Chandra Levy is expected to get a new trial after government attorneys on Friday said the "interests of justice" would best be served by one.

On Friday, after more than a year of sporadic hearings and legal wrangling, government attorneys withdrew their opposition to a new trial for Ingmar Guandique. In a four-page motion, they told a judge they were preparing to re-try him.

Guandique's attorneys had previously asked a judge to grant him a new trial because they said a key witness in the case, Guandique's one-time cellmate, gave false or misleading testimony during his 2010 trial. Guandique's attorneys said prosecutors knew or should have known the testimony was problematic and investigated further.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —Alix Tichelman, the woman described as a "Harbor Hooker" and "Call Girl Killer," pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony charges of involuntary manslaughter and administering drugs.

The high-end prostitute also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor prostitution, possessing drugs, and destroying or concealing evidence.

Judge Timothy Volkmann sentenced her to 6 years behind bars. Tichelman will never have to go to prison because the judge agreed to allow her to serve in Santa Cruz County Jail. She will receive credit for time served, so with good behavior, she will most likely be freed after two years in jail, prosecutors said.

Tichelman smiled in court after receiving the sentence. She also apologized to Forrest Timothy Hayes' wife and five children for his death.

Genius Portrayed in 'A Beautiful Mind' Dies in Accident on New Jersey Turnpike

Princeton University mathematician and Nobel Prize winner John Nash, whose life was the subject of the film "A Beautiful Mind," was killed in a taxi crash along with his wife in New Jersey on Saturday.

Nash and Alicia Nash were in a taxi on the New Jersey Turnpike when the driver lost control and crashed into a guard rail, said New Jersey State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams. Nash was 86; his wife was 82.

Authorities don't believe Nash or his wife were wearing seat belts since they were both ejected from the taxi, Williams said. The couple lived in Princeton, New Jersey.

No charges were expected, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor spokesman Jim O'Neill.

Silk Road Mastermind, Penn State Alum Ross Ulbricht Sentenced to Life in Prison

By Kevin Horne  on May 29, 2015 at 6:52 pm

Jerry Sandusky might be Penn State’s most widely known convicted criminal, but drug kingpin Ross Ulbricht can probably now stake claim to a close second.

Ulbricht, known by his online pseudonym “Dread Pirate Roberts,” was sentenced to life in prison without parole today in Federal District Court in Manhattan after being convicted earlier this year for running the world’s largest drug-trafficking website. Known as Silk Road, the online drug bazaar provided the means for thousands of drug dealers around the world to peddle their goods anonymously to hundreds of thousands of buyers. Users in the marketplace exchanged about $1.2 billion in illegal drugs from its inception in February 2011 until Ulbricht was arrested in October 2013.

So why are you reading about this on Onward State? Well, as it turns out, Ulbricht earned a master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Penn State in 2008. His Master’s thesis — titled Growth of EuO Thin Films by Molecular Beam Epitaxy — was published in 2009 and is  still available to download on Penn State’s server. According to Linkedin, his job at Penn State as a graduate research assistant entailed “designing and implementing project plans to seek out and verify rare properties in crystalline materials; and collaborating internationally and nationally in multiple sub-projects involving spintronics and ferroic materials.”

Four family members beat 14-year-old to abort baby, Dallas police say

Julie Fancher

~snipped~
A 14-year-old girl who was impregnated by a relative was beaten by four other family members to induce an abortion, Dallas police say.

After the eight-month pregnant girl delivered, the family tried to cover up the crime by burning the stillborn baby on a charcoal grill at a Pleasant Grove home, police say.

Cedric Jones, 27; Sharon Jones, 45; Cecila McDonald, 25; and Lonnell McDonald, 27, were arrested Tuesday on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity. They were being held in the Dallas County jail, with bail set at $150,000 each...

...She told police she was a virgin before she was raped and “did not tell anyone about the sexual assault because … she was embarrassed.”
Police said the girl’s relatives found out between January and March 2013 that she was pregnant and “became very nervous and were concerned about … [Child Protective Services] removing children from the residence,” the affidavit says...

...After the pills failed to induce an abortion, Cecila McDonald pinned the girl down while Lonnell McDonald began “repeatedly bouncing up and down” while sitting on the girl’s abdomen. He also is accused of kicking the girl repeatedly...

...The relatives tried to burn the baby’s body in a charcoal grill, but the remains were not destroyed, the affidavit says...

Now I read this.
This guys eyes tell it all:

.Man convicted of stalking Mila Kunis captured in Santa Monica

"....Dunn pleaded no contest to stalking the "Black Swan" and "That '70s Show" actress in January 2013.

He was arrested in February 2012 for breaking into her vacant condominium. And he was taken into custody again months later after he waited for Kunis outside her gym for three days, violating a restraining order....."

Ex-South Carolina police officer indicted in death of black man shot in back

CHARLESTON, S.C., June 8 (Reuters) - A grand jury on Monday indicted a white former police officer on a murder charge for the shooting death of a black man in North Charleston, South Carolina, according to the prosecutor overseeing the case.

Michael Slager, 33, was fired from his patrolman job after being charged with murder in the April 4 death of Walter Scott, 50, who was fatally shot in the back as he was running from the officer following a traffic stop.

A bystander using his cellphone captured a video of the shooting, which was widely distributed in the media. The death reignited a public outcry over police treatment of African Americans that flared last year after killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and elsewhere.

Scott was driving a black Mercedes-Benz when Slager pulled him over for a broken tail light. Video from the dashboard camera in Slager's police cruiser recorded a respectful exchange between the two men before the officer returned to his patrol car.

A few minutes later, after being told by Slager to stay in the Mercedes, Scott emerged from his car and ran off, apparently unarmed.

The subsequent cell phone video showed the men in a brief tussle before Scott ran off again, Slager fired his handgun eight times and Scott slumped into the grass. There was a gap between the two videos.

Before Slager's arrest, he said through an attorney that he feared for his life when he shot Scott.
