The bizarre twists and turns in the case of missing West Valley City mother Susan Powell have all the makings of an interesting true crime story.

And now, the case will become just that: Renowned crime writer Ann Rule — who has tackled the stories of serial murderer Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer, Gary Leon Ridgway, during her 35-year career— plans to publish a book on the story of Susan Powell, who disappeared two years ago, and her husband, Josh, who killed himself and his two sons in a fiery blaze earlier this month.

Chuck Cox, Susan Powell’s father, confirmed Tuesday that he and his wife Judy will meet with Rule on Thursday as the Seattle-based author continues work on a project about his daughter and son-in-law.

The tragic saga of a woman who disappeared two years ago in Utah and her husband who later killed himself and their two young sons in Washington State continued to unfold this week with even more puzzling details.

Adding yet another wrinkle to the story, the Salt Lake Tribune learned Tuesday that Josh Powell’s father, Steven Powell, called in sick to work for two days a day after his daughter-in-law Susan Powell disappeared in Dec. 2009. He worked for the Washington State Correctional Industries at the time, selling furniture made by inmates.

The days Steven Powell took off coincide with when Josh Powell rented a Ford Focus and drove it 800 miles before returning it, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

There was another story I haven't been able to find online about a guy who has been searching mines within 100 miles of Simpson Springs. When he went to search the deepest mine in the area, the shaft could not be searched because of a recent fire with dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide present. A subsequent trip to mine allowed the searcher to get a closer look at the fire damage, which he characterized as being atypical of mine fires he's encountered in the past. The shaft was too deep for him to reach the bottom and said that a professional mining operation would be needed to reach the bottom.

TACOMA, Wash. — The opening two days of the Steven Powell trial proved to be quite eventful.

One of the charges against him was dismissed, any significant talk of Susan Powell was banned from the courtroom, and Susan's family felt extremely frustrated.

But based on the evidence that was presented in court during the trial's third day, at least one legal expert believes prosecutors are well on their way to getting a conviction.

"I think the facts are pretty heavily stacked in favor of the prosecution," University of Utah law professor and former federal judge Paul Cassell said. "It's a very tough case for the defense."

Justice4all, I am convinced Steven P knows where Susan's remains are. I couldn't believe the POS took several days off the day after Susan was reported missing.

I am still checking weekly to see about the 1.5 million dollar insurance policy Susan/Josh had. Josh tried to have Susan's name removed BUT Susan owned the policy on Josh. It's complicated, there were rider's on Braden/Charlie for $ 250,000.00 each. An appalling amount for children UNLESS you planned on murdering them!

93% of the policy is supposed to go to Micheal, Josh's brother, & the other amount divided amongst a sister/brother. Mrs. Graves, another sibling thinks Josh murdered Susan & her dad, Steven was involved.

The good news is that the Coxes' have contested the insurance pay out, the insurance company agrees even questioning the competency of Josh & the possible illegal changes he made to the policies BEFORE he murdered the boy's & killed himself. I hope that scumbag family doesn't reap a penny for the murder's committed by their brother Josh.

I agree Art. Steven most likely knows where Susan's remains are. I don't know if he was involved in the murder, but he probably helped Josh find a better hiding spot for Susan's body during the 800 mile trip with the rental car. There is no way any of the the Powells should receive a penny of that blood money from the insurance policy.

Of over 2000 pictures/pieces of evidence, over 90% were if Susan.
Powell even slid mirrors under bathroom door to use in taking pictures of her in the bathroom.

Says she knew her father had a porn problem for a long time. He would either have gotten ridden of it or continued down the same path.

Not sure. Somehow he talked himself into it being okay.

Why is Alina having a hard time with found the father guilty?
She was layed into really heavy at the age of 7 when parents were being separated. Jan 22, 2010 was the last the two sisters spoke;; that was the day Jenifer went to DC to confront her brother. Jennifer believes it is because Alina was controlled to long by the father.

During trial, father did not look but briefly on Jennifer.
Jennifer does not know if Powell will talk about where Susan is. They got hi, He might as well fess up now. All his secrets are out. Jennifer does believe Powell knows where Susan is buried. Jennifer does not know if he was involved in the death.

2010 Jennifer confronted her father re Susan. She was cussed out. That told her her father knew. She believes Powell did provide sanctuary to Josh after Susan's disappearance.

They will be talking with jurors at 5 their time.

Steven Powell, the father-in-law of missing woman Susan Powell, was found guilty of voyeurism in a Washington court today for taking inappropriate images of neighborhood girls using the bathroom and showering.

The Pierce County, Wash., jury found Powell guilty of all 14 counts of voyeurism after only six-and-a-half hours of deliberations.

I am thrilled w/the juries decision, GUILTY! Although I think there is a place in hell for the likes of Steven P, I would like to see him serve a long miserable sentence, or hell on earth. imo, he made poor Susan miserable, she was right about Steven & Josh. Although the STATE can't make him share information, the Judge has the ability to make Steven pay, 5 yrs. for each charge.

Tacoma, Wash. • As Steve Powell awaits a June sentencing on 14 counts of voyeurism, prosecutors say they aren’t planning to offer any deals in exchange for information he may have about his missing daughter-in-law.

Twelve jurors deliberated for about 6.5 hours over two days before reaching their verdict at 11:55 a.m. MST Wednesday.

Prosecutor Grant Blinn said following the verdict he would not offer Powell, father-in-law of missing Utah woman Susan Powell, a lower sentence recommendation in exchange for any information Powell might provide about Susan.

Steven Powell's Troubles May NOT Be Over, Anne Bremner Representing Young Girls!

The voyeurism conviction of a missing Utah woman's father-in-law may not be the last of his legal troubles, as an attorney said Thursday she is working on a lawsuit that could keep pressure on Steve Powell.

Lawyer Anne Bremner represents the family of two teenage girls who were the target of Powell's voyeurism. She said the lawsuit should be filed in the next few weeks and will accuse him of violating the girls' right to privacy and causing emotional distress.

Bremner said the family does not expect to get any substantial damages from Powell but hopes the lawsuit continues to pressure him to discuss Susan Powell's still-unsolved disappearance.

"You just don't want this guy to be in a position where he can prosper," said Bremner, who also represents Susan Powell's family. "It's yet another way to keep pressure on him."

Anne sites her reasons as to the representation is to keep up the pressure on Steven so maybe he will tell where Susan is, imo, hell is going to freeze over first.

The girl's definitely need representation to sue the scumbag, bring MORE embarrassment/focus to the pervert he is, & to get a Judgement that is going to prevent him from ever having a livelihood imo.

I totally agree Art Tart. He didn't talk knowing that a killer had frequent access to his grandsons, so I doubt that he would talk now. I don't even see him admitting anything when he's on his deathbed. Hopefully Anne and the girls take him for every penny he has.

I don't think we will ever find out where Susan is through the investigation. It will have to be through a chance finding by a stranger. I pray to God he sends that person soon, too.

Sherry, I worry that in the case of Kyron, Terri learned from KC NOT TO DUMP a body, they are eventually found. imo, Josh too learned, I think he buried Susan, in those cases, bodies are rarely discovered unless someone talks. It's terribly sad to never recover a loved one for a respectful burial, but I agree, Susan's remains aren't going to be found through the investigation.

I hope you are right though, the Coxes need to bring Susan home. In the case of Paige Birgfeld, I never thought her remains would be recovered but they were. She was found by a river bed, her family had searched for years.

Are you familiar w/the Perrry Marsh case? The attorney that murdered his beautiful wife Janet? Susan's case reminds a little of that case. Perry's dad, former military & retired pharmacist Arthur Marsh helped Perry MOVE Janet's body, Perry went back to the hotel room & went to sleep, & Arthur found a new place to bury Janet.

Through wire taps, Arthur got busted dispensing advice to a hit man his son had hired to kill the family & charged in the case. He turned State's evidence on his son & testified against him. Although the dad was promised NO JAIL time, the Judge didn't honor it & sentenced him to several yrs in prison, he died 4 months into his sentence. Arthur couldn't remember exactly where he buried Janet, it was night & he wasn't familiar w/the area. Janet's body has never been recovered.

I'm not yet convinced about Terri's guilt. I sure hope that case gets solved soon. Kyron needs to come home! And Susan's parents need their closure, too, though they may not know what all happened, they know who is responsible.

Sherry, it's not likely to ever be resolved imo unless Terri or DeDe talk & tell where Kyron is imo. The disappearance of Kyron points to no one but Terri imo, sadly, Terri didn't like Kyron & she shared numerous emails detailing her digust for him.

Sexting to Kaine's high school friend shortly after Kyron disappeared, failing poly's, PLUS all the information LE has & has shared w/Kaine & Desiree is going to keep Terri under suspicion. Damn, she can't EVEN answer questions in a deposition for "fear of incriminating herself." Anyone, imo, doesn't live as an outcast of society because they want to, Terri has had ample time to PROVIDE all the answers but her FEAR is greater for herself, she has lost custody of Kitty, her greatest joy for this fear, just imagine, she can't even answer questions because she is more concerned about herself. Of course Dr. Manley's recommendations fell on death ears and Powell proceeded to add his sons to his list of murder victims.

J4A, Thanks, I have set the VCR to tune in. I am so glad that more is finally coming out as to Josh's perversion & instability, but I remain angry, imo, LE/CPS failed Charlie/Braden & the Coxes'. At some point, those making laws need to MAN UP & make sure children's rights TRUMP those of an unstable, alcoholic, or abusive parent. Although the smallest victim's, murdered time & again, the signs were there in many cases of an unstable parent. Josh's mannerisms in Court were beyond creepy & as of yet, is ANYONE going to say "I'm sorry, despite ALL the begging the Coxes did, it was the wrong thing to allow Charlie/Braden ANY visitation w/ Josh, much less in his fake residency that he used to murder them." Did anyone really think an unarmed woman could help the children much less save them from Josh?


Seems Josh was the product of his environment. Chuck Cox said his attorney's are trying to figure out exactly where the system broke down, but thus far, I haven't read anything as to their findings. There has to be some accountability in this case, I hope ALL that allowed Josh access to Susan's children are exposed. The promise of LE to the Coxes' & their attorney's that Josh would be arrested, soon, just never happened. The JUDGE saw the images on Josh's computer, she had the ability to prevent Josh from seeing/harming the boys' but there is enough blame to go around.

I agree Art. The more I think about this, the more angry I get. If they didn't have enough to charge Josh with Susan's murder, then they should have arrested him for having child porn on his computer. Instead, he was allowed visitation with his young sons.

At least I thought possessing child porn was illegal, but maybe I'm wrong about the law and it's only illegal to distribute it. If that is the case, the law needs to be changed.

I'm going to set the DVR so I can watch the documentary when I get a chance. I'm sure that it will support our belief that a lot of people dropped the ball and they all need to be held accountable.

I wish two of Steven P's victim's, his neighbor's previously that he videoed/photographed even in the bathroom, would sue the chit out of him in a Civil Suit. imo, what a betrayal of a neighbor, what an invasion of privacy, & what a pervert. Pre-sentence report seeks 10 years for Steven Powell

TACOMA, Washington — A pre-sentence report filed in Pierce County Superior Court seeks 10 years in prison for Steven Powell convicted of voyeurism involving two neighbor girls.

In the report, obtained by FOX 13, Washington corrections officials recommend the sentence based on “aggravating circumstances of multiple counts of the same crime, the same two victims, the same criminal conduct repititiously, and an extreme high offender score.”

The report noted that Steven Powell did not cooperate with investigators, nor did the teenage girls he was convicted of photographing. Corrections officials apparently interviewed Powell’s estranged daughter, Jennifer Graves, whom it identifies in the report as “JG.” She asked for him to be “sent to jail for a long time, for as long as possible.”

I had hoped that the mother of the neighbor girl's Steven videoed/photographed would file a Civil Suit against Steven for damages that I complained about weeks ago. The story below validates my hopes, Ann Bremner is filing a Civil Suit today.

The mother of the girl's is going to give an impact statement, I hope the Judge considers the full sentence, Steven P imo, deserves nothing. He/Josh publicly & repeatedly have disparaged Susan's character to any news outlet that would listen to them. I hope KARMA repays Steven today.

Steve Powell’s fate is in the hands of the trial judge, Ronald Culpepper. While the judge can consider emotional pleas, the sentence Culpepper issues may come down to technical arguments and how he interprets Washington law.

Just a note on Civil Suits: If anyone is following the Kyron Horman Case, it is important to understand the difference in proving the Civil Case. In this case, Bremner has stated that she waited until today to file the "Civil Suit" as it is the end of the Criminal Case for Steven, she is entitled to ALL the public records, testimony, evidence, etc. Too, Steven has been convicted of a crime.

In Desiree's Civil Suit against Terri Horman, she is not entitled to ANY of LE's evidence/case against Terri, Desiree & her attorney have to create ALL the evidence in her Civil Suit & prove in a Court of Law, Terri unlike Steven is NOT convicted or even charged in any crimes. Desiree is not entitled to any evidence in the case, LE's case is ongoing & an open case. It's not impossible, but terribly terribly expensive for Desiree/her attorney to pursue if it is not thrown out.
