Cali wrote:Another heartbreaking post I read in Websleuth's is that the mother never bothered to correct the media about the spelling of this poor child's name. According to the grandma, the corrrect spelling is "Jhessye", which makes more sense when hearing the name spoken as sounding like Jesse. Poor Jhessye.
Snaz - I could swear I corrected the spelling after I read Cali's post.

Search for Jhessye Shockley Is Ending
by Chelsea Hoffman

The search for missing Arizona girl Jhessye Shockley is nearing its end, according to a disappointing report. It's lasted over 18 weeks, but it should really go on for as long as it takes to find the missing child. She was reported missing by her mother Jerice Hunter on October 11, 2011 and since then this case has twisted and turned into a circus of horror.

18th week of landfill hunt to begin for Glendale girl Jhessye Shockley

Glendale Police Department
Glendale crime-scene technician Gina
Carter and Detective Roger Geisler
pause while searching for the body
of Jhessye Shockley at the Butterfield
Station Landfill.
They work shoulder to shoulder for hours each day, the steady scrape of rakes combing through garbage in a valley surrounded by sandy, man-made mountains of trash.
They stand on earth covered with dried sludge. Red-plastic cups, paper and other debris poke through.
The wind coats their faces with dust, which seeps through their protective gear.
The acidic smell of rot, like old cheese, is constant. The odor sticks long after they've left each day. They shower, rinse and repeat to escape it.
But they will return Monday for Week 18 of the search.
The searchers -- nearly 200 in all -- are working their way through a single day's trash, enough to fill about 60 railroad boxcars, to find the body of a little girl.
All of them are police or public-safety workers from around the Valley, and they all volunteered. They did so because they are parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles; each with unique backgrounds that steel their resolve for the grim task.

This article states that the search is ended with no results.
Some of the girl's family gathered Monday at the landfill south of the Valley to say goodbye. They hugged and thanked officers who spent weeks sifting through roughly 9,500 tons of compressed trash, enough to fill most of a football field heaped 20 feet deep. One searcher brought flowers for a makeshift memorial in an open dirt field at the Butterfield Station Landfill.
OMG how unbelievably sad that a child's memorial is at a landfill. Makes my stomach turn.

I've been hoping that they would arrest her again but so much time had passed that I thought that nothing further would happen.

Mother of Arizona girl missing since October arrested.By Richard Dool
updated 4:17 PM EDT, Fri September 07, 2012
•Jhessye Shockley was reported missing October 11
•Police: Shockley was killed and her body is in landfill
•Her mother was arrested and charged with her murder
Jerice Hunter, the mother of Jhessye Shockley, a 5-year-old who was reported missing last fall, has been arrested and charged with her daughter’s murder.
Hunter reported Jhessye Shockley missing from her Glendale, Arizona, home on October 11. Hunter claimed her daughter wandered out of the house while her three older siblings were supposed to be watching her. She says she went to a store and when she came back Jhessye was gone.
Jhessye’s body has never been found, but police declared the case a homicide and named Jerice Hunter the “primary focus” late last year. Hunter was arrested in November and spent a week in jail on charges of alleged child abuse.

Prosecutors: Mother is responsible for missing girl's death

Jerice Hunter
PHOENIX - It's hard to believe we've been covering the case of a missing Glendale girl for almost a year now.
5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing last October.
After months of investigating and pouring over evidence, prosecutors believe they can prove that her own mother is responsible for the child's death.
On Monday, Jerice Hunter is expected to respond to charges of murder and child abuse.
Hunter's arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Authorities say she was arrested on Sept. 6, based on the evidence they've been collecting for the past 11 months, but they've shared very few details about what they discovered.

Re: Jhessye Shockley -- Missing 10/11/11
I've just read the article at this link shown on the home page:
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2012/10/09/20121009relatives-suspected-jhessye-shockley-was-abused.html
How is it possible that so many people saw evidence that Jhessye was "more-than-likely" being abused and they never reported it? If the article is accurate, then of the handful of people who noticed burn marks, signs that her teeth had been knocked out and even a grandmother of a 9-year old child who saw that Jhessye was being kept in a cupboard ... and of all these people, only 1 person contacted social services.
Isn't a person obligated to report knowledge or suspicions of child abuse? I'm also aware that there are huge problems with Social Services but it always amazes me how many people can notice that something is hopelessly wrong and just ignore it and walk away.

Yes you are obligated legally (at least here in Canada) and it is the right and moral thing to do. The protection of a child should be the primary concern. But I will say that unfortunately too many people do not report because they are afraid that the parent will find out who it was that reported and discontinue contact or retaliate in some manner. I fear that it has become a societal norm to not become involved in other people's business. That is why they say if you are in trouble not to yell help (because people will ignore that) but scream "fire" instead.
lol I must be the most nosy, intrusive neighbour in the world because I called our CFS the other day because a man walking his children to school was verbally abusive to the little girls.. was saying "hurry up dogs... lets go dogs" repeatedly, both girls looked devastated. If you will say that in front of witness' what happens at home? And yes CFS did a full investigation including visiting the school.

Justanopinion, I’m guessing that you are one of very few people who actually care enough to do something. One is also obligated to report abuse here in SA; however, not many people do. It just shocks, saddens and irks me that people are so complacent during the only time when their actions can make a difference, and yet, when it’s far too late and the child is already dead, suddenly they have plenty to say. I mean for heaven’s sake … why not make a difference before it’s too late.
An important part of reducing child abuse is for the public to report their suspicions as we are the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood and for Social Services to be effective. Since both the reporting and responding are so badly flawed the chances of a child being rescued from an abusive home are little to none.

A $3 million notice of claim was filed this week against the state of Arizona, Child Protective Service and the Glendale Police Department, alleging their “gross” negligence led to the “wrongful” death of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley.
Attorney Dwane Cates filed the claim - the first step toward a lawsuit - on behalf of the Glendale girl’s future estate represented by three family members who helped raise Jhessye for the first four years of her life.
Glendale Police spokeswoman Tracey Breeden said the department doesn’t comment on litigation matters. Officials from the state and CPS did not immediately respond.

The trial date for Jerice has been scheduled for August 4, 2014. The passage of time has not diminished the horror surrounding the torture and death of little Jhessye Shockley. Jerice is evil, and does not deserve to live out her natural life in prison. There is no punishment severe enough to justify her treatment of Jhessye.
Sweet Jhessye, may you rest in peace always, surrounded by singing birds bearing brightly colored beautiful hairbows.

I tried to see if the trial really started on the 12th as was expected and I cannot find any coverage of this.. I am greatly saddened that nowhere is covering this trial.
reminder of this case… To this day, police believe that Shockley’s final resting place is at the Butterfield Station Landfill and that Hunter is their main and only suspect in the girl’s disappearance.
A four and one-half month search of the landfill produced no results. An estimated $750,000 was spent on the search, and police and the public were all wondering what had become of little Jhessye.
Hunter has a record of child abuse. She previously served four years in a California prison in 2005 for child abuse. She was later released on parole in May 2010.
Hunter allegedly told investigators that she left Shockley with the girl’s siblings while she ran an errand and when she got home, Shockley was gone. She has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder as well as child abuse charges.

PHOENIX (AP) - A judge is restricting camera coverage in the trial of an Arizona woman in the 2011 disappearance of her 5-year-old daughter.
Judge Rosa Mroz of Maricopa County Superior Court ruled Monday that video and audio recording of Jerice Hunter's trial will generally be permitted, but Mroz prohibited live-streaming.
She also barred video recording of the testimony of three particular witnesses.
Mroz cited the potential impact on Hunter's right to receive a fair trial. She said some witnesses are reluctant to testify and that witnesses' testimony could be tainted by live-streaming.

Legally Speaking: Trial for missing child Jhessye Shockley begins
By Monica Lindstrom, KTAR Legal Analyst, Co-host of The Agenda | March 25, 2015 @ 10:18 pm
The trial of State v. Jerice Hunter commenced Wednesday in Judge Rosa Mroz's courtroom.
The proceedings started with the court clerk reading the charges to the jury. Those charges are child abuse and murder under a theory of felony murder.
The state is alleging that in the course of abusing Jhessye Shockley, Hunter caused the death of her five-year-old daughter. The state is not seeking the death penalty, which could be the result of the fact that Shockley's body has never been recovered.
Next came the reading of the preliminary jury instructions.
Promptly after reading these instructions to the jury, Judge Mroz turned her attention to the audience and politely, though curtly, told them that if anyone approaches any of the jurors they will be removed from the courtroom and not allowed back in. (Judge Mroz was also the judge assigned to the most recent proceedings in the State v. Debra Milke case.)
I can already tell this trial will not run into the same problems the State v. Jodi Arias trial did.
All seats in the South Court Tower courtroom were initially filled, though one person -- Hunter's father -- had to be removed from the courtroom because he was chuckling during the state's opening statement.
Even if his behavior was a result of his disbelief of the comments, his actions were especially offensive considering it was during the state's explanation of what Shockley had allegedly endured.
The prosecutor went through a detailed timeline of the events that occurred before and after Shockley's death, emphasizing what witnesses would be called and what their testimony would entail. The state focused on the alleged lies Hunter told the cops after she reported her daughter missing, and more importantly, the details that she failed to disclose.
The state's opening also included the fact little Jhessye had been absent from school for a number of days prior to the missing persons 9-1-1 call.

School: Jhessye missed 12 days just before 'missing' report

The state continued to present its case against Jerice Yaton Hunter Thursday, starting the day by playing the roughly seven-minute 911 recording of Hunter reporting to police that her daughter, Jhessye Shockley, was missing on October 11, 2011 from her apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues.
Hunter, 41, is on trial for child abuse and first-degree murder. The state has accused her of killing Shockley, putting her body in a suitcase and throwing it in a dumpster at a Tempe apartment complex.
Prosecutor Blaine David Gadow questioned the attendance and detention clerk from the elementary school where Jhessye attended kindergarten about Hunter's explanations for why her daughter had missed 12 days of class leading up to the day the girl went missing.
Those reasons varied, according to Susan Holm's records, from missing the bus, to ringworm and pinkeye, to waiting for a doctor's appointment so Hunter could get a release signed for Jhessye could return to school... ~snipped~

...Jerice Hunter, 41, is accused of keeping her daughter Jhessye Shockley in a bedroom closet at the family's suburban Phoenix home, depriving her of food and water, and beating her. Authorities believe the child is no longer alive. Her remains were never found."The defendant threw her away like trash," prosecutor Jeannette Gallagher told jurors...
...She didn't kill Jhessye and believes her daughter is alive, said Hunter's attorney, Candice Shoemaker."There is no body. There is no proof she is dead," said Shoemaker, who offered no alternative theory on what became of the child...
...The prosecutor said it's unknown whether Jhessye died from malnutrition, dehydration or injuries she suffered. "The answer to that question will never be known," Gallagher said...

How Jerice Hunter is charged with murder without a body
William Pitts, 12 News 10:27 p.m. MST March 27, 2015
"....The second week of Jerice Hunter's murder trial begins Monday and prosecutors are trying to convince the jury that 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley is dead, even without a body.
Hunter is accused of killing Shockley through neglect, packing her body in a suitcase and throwing it in a dumpster in Tempe.
Police and volunteers sorted through a landfill for three months looking for Shockley's body, but found nothing.
Without a body to point to as evidence, prosecutors must focus on what evidence they do have: Hunter's history of child abuse, blood evidence, witness statements and the testimony of her own children. ..."

Jerice Hunter trial continues
William Pitts, 12 News 5:21 p.m. MST March 30, 2015
Jurors in the Jerice Hunter murder trial heard Hunter's interview with police, recorded just hours after 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley went missing.
Hunter is charged with first degree murder in the death of Shockley. Prosecutors say Hunter kept Shockley in a closet for weeks before disposing of her body in a dumpster. Her body was never found.
In the interrogation tape, Detective Shane Leske tells Hunter she appears too calm, not crying. He tells her he would not be as calm as she is if he were in her position.
Yet throughout the interview, Hunter sits in a chair in a corner, calmly answering Leske's questions. Leske eventually asks her if she did anything to Jhessye, then tells her she must know more than she's telling him. She denies it.

OMG! Such sickening cruelty!!! No regard for human life! I can't imagine the pain little Jhessye must have endured at the hands of the one person she should have been able to trust. Jerice Hunter is another soulless creature that deserves a one-way ticket to Perryville. I hope this jury sees this case for what it really is and does the right thing. Jerice Hunter can tell Jodi Arias what child abuse actually looks like...and, it doesn't look like annual family trips to Disneyland.
