PHOENIX - Jurors finished day three of deliberations Thursday in the Jerice Hunter murder trial. They're trying to decide if the Glendale mother murdered her five-year-old daughter.

It's a tough case to prove, because investigators never found Jhessye Shockley's body.

"Generally, when there's no body in a homicide case, it's difficult for the prosecutor to prosecute the case," said criminal defense attorney Russ Richelsoph with Davis Miles.

Richelsoph points out that proving a murder without a victim is difficult, but it's been done before.

Thank everything that is good that Jhessye will be able to rest in peace as justice will be done properly in this case as I think the Judge will not go easy on this monster.
As far as Jurice's mother goes??? What a loon...No wonder she has a monster for a daughter as that apple fell straight to the ground right next to the trunk of that tree.

A jury found Jerice Hunter guilty Monday of murdering her 5-year-old daughter, Jhessye Shockley.

It appeared the jury had made up its mind on the verdict during closing arguments, when they rarely took notes. Instead several of them were seen checking the clock while one spun in his chair.

The first jury deliberated for about 11 hours. A pregnant juror was replaced Monday, hours before the verdict was read. The second panel was ordered to begin deliberations anew and took less than two hours to reach a verdict.

The jury found Hunter guilty on all aggravating factors. Hunter will be sentenced June 5. She faces a minimum of 21 years (for child abuse) and a maximum of natural life in prison.

Yes, I agree with all that you have written, One Wonders.  I am incredibly happy that the jury got this one right.  I was beginning to worry because the verdict seemed to be taking a long time.  This verdict and the resulting sentence this monster-mom receives will be the closest thing to justice that can be had for little Jhessye.

Glendale Police Department speaks out after Jerice Hunter's guilty verdict



Emotions ran high on both sides Monday after Jerice Hunter was found guilty in the  first-degree murder of her 5-year-old daughter Jhessye Shockley.

A jury found Hunter guilty of first-degree murder and related child-abuse charges after just two hours of deliberations.

The first jury deliberated for about 11 hours, before a pregnant juror was replaced for medical reasons just hours before the verdict was read.

The Glendale Police Department put out a press release Monday expressing their relief with the verdict, which has been a long time coming. Hunter has been in jail for the murder since 2012 and has since maintained her innocence.

"The Glendale Police Department would like to acknowledge the significance of today's events surrounding the Jerice Hunter trial. A jury returned a verdict finding Jerice Hunter guilty of abusing and murdering her 5-year-old daughter, Jhessye Shockley. What started as a call of a missing 5-year-old girl over 3-and-a-half years ago, developed into an exhaustive search and later into a homicide investigation which spanned months. The ensuing three month landfill search for Jhessye's body involved nearly 300 men and women from Glendale PD, as well as 13 other agencies. Through it all, our goal always remained the same - to obtain justice for Jhessye Shockley.  We are pleased with the jury's decision today as it assures justice does prevail against an individual responsible for the unimaginable crime of murdering a child. While the verdict provides some sense of satisfaction, it does not diminish the loss suffered by the family who loved Jhessye or lessen the tragedy a community endures when a child is murdered."


Authorities believe Hunter murdered Jhessye and disposed of her body weeks before reporting her missing. Her body has not been recovered.

Jurors in the Jerice Hunter murder trial speak out

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - One day after Jerice Hunter was found guilty in the death of her 5-year-old daughter, we're hearing from some of the people on the jury.

FOX 10 spoke with three jurors Tuesday afternoon, two of them agreed to talk with us.

They say being on this jury was life changing.

Their guilty verdict is not something they took lightly; they came forward mostly because of Jerice Hunter's mom outburst in court where she called the jury racists.

"My baby is not dead, you are all going to stop looking for her because she's black, she's not dead you racists," said Hunter's mom.

Two jurors in the trial say race had absolutely nothing to do with the verdict, finding Hunter guilty of murder and child abuse.

"You don't see black, white, Mexican, Asian, you just see a beautiful little girl who deserved justice," said a juror who did not want to be identified.

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Nearly four years after 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing, her mother will learn her sentence for killing her.

It certainly was shocking case from the beginning.  The 5-year-old girl disappeared without a trace.
Even though her body has never been found, her own mother was found guilty of her murder.

Jerice Hunter was convicted of her daughter's death and abusing her.

Jerice Hunter's sentencing in daughter's murder postponed until mid-July

PHOENIX -- The sentencing date for a Phoenix-area mother convicted of murdering her kindergarten-age daughter was pushed back to mid-July.

Jerice Hunter made an appearance Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court for a hearing and the sentencing was postponed until July 17. Originally, Friday had been the determined sentencing date.

Hunter could face up to life in prison for the death of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley, whose body has not been found. Hunter was convicted of first-degree murder April 27.

Hunter, 41, has been in jail since 2012.

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - A Glendale mom convicted of killing her daughter will be sentenced early Friday afternoon.

Jerice Hunter will be sentenced at Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. She faces 35 years to life in prison.

Hunter was supposed to be sentenced in June but that was pushed back until today.

Hunter's daughter, 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley, went missing in October 2011. Detectives never found her body but the jury believed there was enough evidence to prove Hunter beat, starved and killed Jhessye.

"Justice for Jhessye. We don't get Jhessye back but we do got some type of justice for her because she didn't deserved to die like this," said Lisa Vance, Jhessye’s cousin in a TV interview last month. Vance helped raise the little girl.

Hunter was found guilty of the murder in April.

Jhessye Shockley's body has not been found.

Jerice Hunter, the Glendale mother convicted of killing her 5-year-old daughter, Jhessye Shockley, has been sentenced to life prison. The girl's body has never been found, but police believe her body was stuffed in a suitcase and left in a Tempe garbage bin.

The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that began in October 2011, when Hunter told police that Shockley had disappeared from her Glendale apartment. She did not react when Judge Rosa Mroz read the sentence Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

During the trial, prosecutors had portrayed Hunter as a liar and manipulator who, after serving a prison sentence in California, used law enforcement to take Jhessye from loving relatives. They argued that Hunter never developed a maternal bond with the girl described by her teacher as "bubbly" and an "emerging leader."

I am very happy to hear that the judge sentenced Jerice Hunter to the max, LWOP. At least there has been some measure of justice for little Jhessye and this "monster mother" will never be free again and never be able to harm another child.

I am also happy that the judge threw this little zinger at Jerice after JH insisted on her innocence.
Judge says: "I have to agree with the jury there was substantial evidence that you did kill her and dumped her like yesterday's trash"

Jerice Hunter can now spend the rest of her life at Perryville in the company of Arias, Shawna Ford, and the lovely and charming Angela Simpson.

"The last laugh is on you. I hope you burn in hell."

Those were the sentiments Jhessye Shockey's aunt, Lisa Vance, shared during the sentencing for Jerice Hunter Friday afternoon.

"This it to the baby killer sitting behind me; how dare you. How dare you sit there stone-faced, no emotion. None; your baby is dead," she said through tears.

I'm satisfied that Jerice got life without the possibility of parole for the heinous crime that she committed against Jhessye Shockley.  It is some measure of justice.

She was such a precious child, many people really loved her. She would have been better off away from the monster that she had for a mother.
What a sad case! May she rest in peace.

PHOENIX -- A jury sentenced Jerice Hunter to an Arizona prison for the rest of her life without the possibility of parole Friday for killing her young daughter, Jhessye Shockley.

The sentence was handed down in front of an emotional courtroom.

Friday's sentencing came four months after Hunter, of Glendale, was found guilty of first-degree murder  and child abuse of her 5-year-old Shockley.

A jury found Hunter guilty on all aggravating factors. An original sentencing date of June 5 had been set but was postponed until July.

Hunter has been in jail since 2012. She had been arrested on suspicion of child abuse Nov. 21, 2011, a month after her daughter went missing.

Hunter has always proclaimed her innocence and she continued to do so through her sentencing.

Finally! The ordeal is over and Jerice got what she deserved. Actually, I think she deserves worse for the physical and emotional pain that she inflicted upon her 5 year old daughter.  She ultimately murdered her and showed utter disregard for human life when she disposed of her body in a trash bin.  She is a despicable and an abhorrent imitation of a human being. I'm totally disgusted by her actions.  I can go on and on  with the adjectives to describe her lack of humanity, she is a monster.
