Oscar Pistorius shuffled through a Pretoria court without his prosthetic legs on Wednesday to show how vulnerable he is as the Paralympian seeks to avoid prison for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The 29-year-old faces a minimum 15-year jail term for the Valentine's Day killing in 2013 in a case that has attracted worldwide interest and divided South Africa. He will be sentenced on July 6.

Pistorius has always said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home, killing her almost instantly.

During his closing arguments, defense lawyer Barry Roux asked the gold medalist, known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetics, to walk on his stumps to show the difficulty he faced dealing with the threat of an intruder.

Nel did a masterful job reinforcing the SCA judgement which states that sentencing STARTS at 15 years minimum and then reduces IF, and ONLY IF, there are mitigating factors strong enough. He pointed out that you cannot be remorseful for something you haven't explained! Pointed out that OP did a iTV interview due to air June 24th, but opted not to speak to the court...Nel said that is an affront to the court, the victim and the victim's parents. He also got 5 of the crime scene photos released to the public (not sure when this will occur).

Sentencing date: July 6, 2016

Evening news showed OP hobbling with effort about the court on his stumps.
I recall how he could walk with ease .... and how he could play kickball !

Cape Town - M-Net and SuperSport have secured the rights to screen the much talked-about ITV documentary Oscar Pistorius: The Interview, featuring the former Paralympic athlete’s first television interview since the tragic events of Valentine’s Day in 2013.

M-Net viewers will be able to watch the interview as part of a Carte Blanche special minutes after its world-premiere on the UK television network on Friday, June 24.

The Carte Blanche special, which will include an in-depth panel discussion, will start at 22:55 on both M-Net and its sister channel M-Net City (channel 115), which is also on DStv Compact.

From the above video posting, I see Reeva has a badly bruised right eye.
That had to have happened prior to death due to blood flow needed for bruising.
Is this what he used his cricket bat for? To smack her in the face?
He is certainly bathed in blood.
Hard to believe all the blood came from OP shooting her thru the door and then kneeling by , if that is what he claimed. (IIRC, he carried/dragged her body down the stairs. Was blood evidence shown from that incidence.)
Wish forensics would explain the blood transfer onto OP. Some of that appears to be blow back, drip as well as smudge.

I still want an accounting of:
1. The blood found on the wall above the bed
2. OP was reported to have accessed a porn site early that morning prior to the killing.
Is this the reason why the cover  of his electronic device was found torn off?
Did Reeva come unglued, destroy his property, and OP was so enraged he killed her?
3, What explanation for the belted pants found directly beneath the second floor bathroom?

Those tears are tears for himself. I wasn't there. However, the impression I get from him is not good. There is something twisted inside of him. I am pretty convinced that they had big issues. PRETORIA: South African Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius was sent to prison for six years on Wednesday for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, the latest twist in a trial that has gripped the world.

The state and large sections of the South African public had called for him to receive no less than the prescribed minimum 15-year sentence for murder, saying Pistorius had shown no remorse for the killing.

Judge Thokozile Masipa disagreed, accepting the defence's arguments for a lesser punishment.

"Public opinion may be loud and persistent but it can play no role in the decision of this court," Masipa said. "I am of the view that a long term in prison will not serve justice."

It was not clear whether the state would appeal the verdict.

In her ruling on Wednesday, Masipa said that although the Steenkamp family had suffered great loss, Pistorius' life and career was also in ruins.

"The life of the accused shall also never be the same. He is a fallen hero and can never be at peace," she said.

Members of the Women's League of the ruling African National Congress (ANCWL), who have attended the trial in support of the murdered Steenkamp, said the sentence handed down by Masipa was not sufficient.

"First five years, now six years? She is an embarrassment to the justice system," ANCWL spokeswoman Jacqueline Mofokeng said of Masipa. "It is an insult to women in this country."

Pistorius will not appeal sentence

A member of Oscar Pistorius's legal team said outside the High Court in Pretoria that they will not appeal his six-year jail sentence for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp.

"We respect the decision of Judge Masipa and are not lodging an application for leave to appeal. Oscar will serve his sentence as handed down," Andrew Fawcett told reporters.

Advocate Dali Mpofu weighed in on that decision on Twitter, saying it was "wise", as an appeal could backfire on Pistorius.

Mr. Pistorius, the judge said, had shown genuine remorse in trying, repeatedly and unsuccessfully, to apologize in person to the victim’s parents.

In handing out the six-year sentence, Judge Masipa surprised many legal experts who had predicted that a term of at least 10 years would split the difference between guidelines that call for at least 15 years in prison for murder but that also allow for a reduction based on other considerations.

Both sides can appeal the judge’s sentence, leaving the possibility that the case may not be over. Mr. Pistorius’s lawyers said they would not file an appeal.

Perhaps anticipating a challenge by prosecutors, Judge Masipa said in her ruling Wednesday morning that she would be available to receive a request for an appeal that same day.

Among other mitigating factors, the judge said she considered the circumstances of the shooting and Mr. Pistorius’s disability.

She also noted that Mr. Pistorius was a first-time offender who had shown himself to be a good candidate for rehabilitation. “I am of the view that a long-term imprisonment will not serve justice,” Judge Masipa said.

Marius du Toit, a criminal defense lawyer, former prosecutor and judge who has closely followed the trial, said the sentence, though “erring on the side of leniency,” clearly reflected the judge’s belief that Mr. Pistorius was guilty of what amounts to an accidental murder, not one with intent.

Mr. du Toit said that prosecutors could decide to contest the sentence by asking Judge Masipa to grant leave to appeal or, failing that, by petitioning the Supreme Court of Appeals directly.

“But is it something that another court will interfere with? I somehow don’t think so,” he said. “I think we may have reached the end of this matter.”

He is totally unbelievable. This info should be used to ADD to any sentence he will receive. Even the one currently on appeal.

The report of injuries to Pistorius, who denied he had attempted suicide, came as athletes compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Pistorius and his coach said before Steenkamp's 2013 killing that they wanted to retire together at the Rio games.

Pistorius told officials that he suffered the injuries after falling out of bed, said Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the South Africa's correctional services department. ..."

Thank goodness the prosecution filed to appeal....AGAIN....the woefully little 6 year sentence. Hopefully they can obtain the justice that Masipa denied the Steenkamp's. IMO
