I'm anxious to hear the interviews from some of the jurors, I understand several stations have interviewed some of them, but they won't be broadcast until the 11pm news. It's also my understanding Sarah's mom seemed relieved leaving the courtroom. What a nightmare for both of these families. I watched an interview from another high profile defense attorney on the local news and he said Ryan forming "relationships" with these women after the fact most likely hurt him in the eyes of the jury. He said he felt the jury felt sympathy for Jennifer Crew, and he got too cozy and friendly with the more attractive Melissa Waller. And apparently, Sarah Manherz, Ryan's supposed girlfriend he met on FreeRyanWidmer.com was in the courtroom for the first time today. She moved from New York to West Chester, OH to be with Ryan. She did leave the courthouse with Ryan's dad today.

One of the news stations is reporting that juror #3 called into WLW, local radio station, he was an older gentleman. He said the 911 call, Ryan's demeanor in the courtroom & they felt Ryan was a cocky punk. They did not believe Waller or Crew...........

Sounds to me, if this is true, they had their mind made up when they went into deliberations. They asked for the 911 call first. Just my opinion..........we'll hear more.
Estee, I wasn't expecting it this quick either. I think it surprised everyone!

"Judge I did not do this. I don't know why this has to keep going on. I love Sarah. I would never hurt her. Never," Widmer said after the judge asked if he had anything to say to the court.

I know it surprised me that the verdict came in so early. I'm just glad that it wasn't Crew's testimony that did any swaying as much as we know so far. I thought she was quite the drama queen on the stand. Enduring listening to her on the stand was akin to listening to Cindy Anthony on the stand->ack

Hi, Piper!
Thank you for posting all of the pics and videos. Please keep us posted on what the locals have to say!
Sarah was a pretty young lady.
It is so odd that Ryan got "involved" with these women after the fact. It just seems odd that if he was grieving for Sarah that he would give these gals the time of day.
Piper, is Ryan's mother and father still married? Does he have a step-mother?
If I had followed this case from day one, I would know the answer to my question.

Ryan Widmer: Guilty again, courtroom erupts
kypost.com - Kentucky
Posted: 11:12 PM - February 15, 2011
LEBANON, Ohio - An explosion of emotion erupted in and outside the courtroom Tuesday when Ryan Widmer’s fate was determined by a jury of 12, after 12 hours of deliberation, who filed into the courtroom never looking in Ryan’s direction.
The judge read the words: “Ryan K. Widmer is guilty of murder.”
An emotional outburst rang throughout the crowded courtroom as a guilty verdict was read to Widmer, who stood sobbing, leaning over the table, head down, face in his hands, resting on the table.
Even before the verdict was read, began to cry. The jury form is handed to the bailiff. He delivered it to Judge Neal Bronson, who looked down at the piece of paper and reminded the galleries that the court would tolerate no outbursts.

Hi Ann! Thanks for all of the links. Ryan's parents are divorced, he does have a stepmother. Ryan's father did not attend the wedding. Sarah's mom, Ruth Ann, did not meet Ryan's mother until the wedding rehearsal/dinner. That is my understanding.

"The jurors asked not to be identified at this point. One juror told News 5, "We did not take Jennifer Crew's testimony into account. We discredited her."
Another juror echoed that statement and said, "She was discredited, although we gave her a fair shot."
The jurors said what brought them to a guilty verdict in 12 hours of deliberations was the testimony about the bathroom and the 911 call.
"The 911 call did not sit well with us," one juror said. "That played a very big part. We listened to it five or six times."
One juror said it "sounded like he was faking it."
All three jurors said they really didn't want to find Widmer guilty.
"We tried everything we could to not find him guilty," one juror said.
All three said it was a difficult, but in the end, they said they did what prosecutors told them to do. They said they used their common sense and life experiences combined with the evidence. They said they all agreed Widmer intentionally killed his wife.
The jurors said the evidence did not support the defense's theory that Sarah had a seizure or medical condition."

This reporter said on the news last night that the 3 jurors told her it was the 911 call, they thought it sounded fake, and that the bathtub was dry.

I'm sure his attorneys will appeal immediately. But in my opinion, this is the end of it. The Lt. Braley findings that weren't allowed in court and the lack of funding for more research into what happened to Sarah, I don't think that's going to make a difference on appeal, just my opinion.

This link of Ann's has a lot of information!
http://www.wcpo.com/subindex/news/crime/widmer_2009
There has been talk of jury members emailing/talking to friends during the trial. I don't know what will come of this. I think Judge Bronson was made aware of it, but apparently he felt it wasn't a concern, if there was one to begin with.

Its as if the odds were stacked against Ryan from getting a fair trial! Sure, the State has the burden of proof but should they be able to make that burden so heavy that the defendant can't lift it off of himself? I couldn't believe that the defense could not tear apart what one of Ryan's accusers, Braley, dug up against him. This was the most lop-sided trial I have ever seen or heard.

Sherry, I truly disagreed with Judge Bronson's ruling on Braley in this third trial. Braley sat at the prosecution table in trial 1 and 2. And he's still employed..........

Juror: Widmer should have testified
Updated 11:18 AM Wednesday, February 16, 2011
LEBANON — The jury in the Ryan Widmer trial based its decision to convict the Warren County man based on the dry bathroom scene found and his fateful 911 call, a juror said.
The juror, who asked not to be identified, said she also based her decision on the fact that Widmer didn’t testify. The jury was cautioned numerous times by the judge that Widmer had a Constitutional right not to testify.
It was a tough choice for the jury, according to the woman.
“It was the hardest decision any of us ever had to make...,” she said. “We tried every way to find excuses for Ryan and there was none.”
The juror said they went witness by witness, all 44 who testified, and dissected everything before they took one vote — guilty of murder.
“I couldn’t say there was any particular credible witness,” she said. “The fact that we couldn’t hear Ryan’s side of the story was bad.”

Not good! The defendant, Ryan Widmer, is not required to testify. The burden of proof lies with the State of Ohio.
Jurors can not use this against the defendant if he does not testify. The fact that Widmer did not testify, on behalf of his own defense, should have not even been discussed during jury deliberations.
The testimony of witnesses for the Prosecution and the Defense and evidence introduced during trial is what the jurors should base their finding of guilty or not guilty.

Thanks for the video of the 911 call, Piper.
One thing that really stood out to me was that Ryan made the comment, "She falls asleep in the bathtub all of the time." (not verbatim)
I wonder what Peter Hyatt, Statement Analysis, would have to say about this 911 call, especially the above statement. It was not necessary for Ryan to throw that comment in.

Also, it's being said that at least one of the jurors posted on Facebook Sunday night. The judge asked them to refrain from using Facebook, and definitely prohibited researching the case on line.
Hmmm....it will be interesting to see where the "Ryan not testifying" statement will go!

Ryan Widmer juror: Guilty verdict not reached in haste
12:07 PM, Feb. 16, 2011
LEBANON – To outsiders, jurors in Ryan Widmer’s third murder trial seemed to reach a guilty verdict quickly Tuesday. But the process felt agonizing and “gut-wrenching,’’ a juror told the Enquirer today.
In a wide-ranging interview, the Hamilton Township juror said his colleagues explicitly followed Judge Neal Bronson’s instructions.
“I believe that we were very thorough,’’ he said. “I’m not aware of any jury misconduct.’’

This jury wanted to try to find Widmer, 30, not guilty of murder, he said. Authorities said Sarah Widmer was drowned in the bathtub of the couple’s Hamilton Township home in 2008. But some jurors thought she could have been drowned in the toilet, he said.
That theory was touched upon in Widmer’s first trial in 2009 but did not resurface in his 2010 trial or in this trial.
The juror declined to reveal what specific scenario they believed led to Sarah Widmer’s death. Regardless, he said, the evidence didn’t allow the jury to envision any scenario that explained the dry conditions of the alleged drowning scene. He also said the sequence of events in Ryan Widmer’s 911 call didn’t match the evidence.
“I know in my heart that we made the right decision, based on the evidence,’’ he said.

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - Ryan Widmer's defense team is alleging that jurors in his third trial talked about the case with family and friends.
Widmer, 30, was found guilty Tuesday in the murder of his wife, Sarah.
Judge Neal Bronson lifted a gag order on Wednesday, meaning attorneys are now allowed to talk about the case.
One of Widmer's attorneys, Charlie Rittgers, issued the following statement:
"In the middle of the prosecution's case, the defense team was alerted by a number of people that at least two of the jurors had told friends or family members that they were certain Ryan was going to be found guilty. We are currently trying to substantiate the allegations. Ryan is innocent and I firmly believe that had the jury followed Judge Bronson's instructions on the law that the verdict would have been not guilty."

Here we go! There's more information on Lt. Braley earlier in this thread:
Probe begins into files of lead detective in Widmer case
2:55 PM Thursday, February 17, 2011
HAMILTON TWP. — Officials here agreed to hire an independent attorney to further probe the alleged fraudulent records in the personnel file of the lead detective in the Ryan Widmer case.
A day after Widmer was found guilty of murder, township trustees voted Tuesday night to hire attorney Doug Miller of Donnellon, Donnellon and Miller to start an independent investigation into the alleged fraudulent records in Lt. Jeff Braley’s file.
“He will review all the disputed documents and interview any witnesses or employees that he thinks appropriate, to determine whether or not there should be a pre-disciplinary hearing for Lt. Braley,” Law Director Warren Ritchie said.
Since Braley is a union member, the township has to follow the proper channels, such as the pre-disciplinary hearing.
In January, a brief report was issued by forensic scientist Rebecca Barrett of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. She noted she inspected Braley’s files and compared them to his confirmed signature.
Barrett confirmed it was Braley’s signature, but said “a lack of evidence does not prove that only one ink pen was used or that no alterations could have occurred.
Ritchie said the BCI finding prompted trustees to take the next step.
“They would be remiss if they didn’t follow up to determine whether in fact those documents were misstated by Lt. Braley and if so, whether that’s a matter for disciplinary action,” Ritchie said.
Braley said despite what the BCI report says, he believes someone is out to get him and did tamper with the documents. He has said in the past he believes the documents were pieced together.

Thanks Sherry.......I notice they also are using his original date of 04/06/2009 for admission from the first trial in that first section. Then further down they post the 2/16/11. He served about 5 1/2 months I think the first time.

I wonder which prison they will assign him to. He was previously at Lebanon Correctional, which is right here and close to his family.

I hope it will be Lebanon if its close to his family.
2025-that's 14 years away but I am praying for another mistrial and that the new prosecutor will drop the case. We had a young man who was recently freed after he was wrongly pronounced "guilty" for his girlfriend's murder 13 years ago, IIRC. I hope it doesn't take that much time for Ryan to be set free.
I saw a poll on one of the news sites posted here at RC yesterday that showed that the majority of the people think Ryan is innocent.

I'm on my knees too...This young man has been in my prayers for a while now...I feel that somehow there will be a mistrial proclaimed...at least I hope there will be...The jury should be scrutinized, as to their texting, e-mail and blogging if they did so...Surely the contents of which can be found...

12 Angry Men is on TCM channel...I've never seen it so I'm watching it now...Very interesting how juries conflict...I wonder if Ryan's jury behaved thusly...

Experts: Ryan Widmer jurors' comments raise legal questions
12:43 PM, Feb. 18, 2011
Important legal concepts seem to have been lost on some Warren County jurors who convicted Ryan Widmer of murder, experts say, based on interviews reported in local news media since Tuesday’s verdict.
But Widmer’s lawyers have no recourse unless they can legally substantiate that jurors disobeyed orders, experts say.
Even so, the topic is worthy of public debate, “because we’re seeing an increasing trend of jurors disregarding judges’ simple instructions,” says attorney Mike Allen, a former Hamilton County prosecutor and municipal court judge.
Judge Neal Bronson clearly explained to the jury during Widmer’s 17-day trial:
• The defendant doesn’t have to prove he’s innocent; he’s presumed innocent and the prosecution must prove his guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
• The defendant’s decision not to testify cannot be considered for any purpose.
• “Murder” is an intentional killing while “involuntary manslaughter” would be an assault that unintentionally caused a death.
Yet one juror, quoted by WKRC-TV, Channel 12, said, “It’s just the evidence, to us, did not prove innocence.”
Another juror, quoted in the Western Star, a Warren County newspaper, said: “The fact that we couldn’t hear Ryan’s side of the story was bad,” indicating he should have testified.
The Enquirer quoted a juror who said, “We think something happened and he just snapped,” a scenario that defense lawyer Mark Krumbein says appears to fit the legal definition of involuntary manslaughter, not murder.
Widmer’s jurors were given involuntary manslaughter as a choice, at the prosecutors’ request. That charge is less serious than murder and would have carried a maximum five-year prison term rather than 15-to-life.
After two mistrials, Widmer, 30, was convicted of murder Tuesday in the 2008 drowning of his wife, Sarah, 24.

I can't believe there won't be a mistrial, there are 2 jurors that said that one of the reasons they found him guilty was because he didn't testify.. If there isn't, I will have lost all confidence in the justice system. I will say again, I don't know if he did it, but I do know there is reasonable doubt all over this case. And I watch one of the jurors on T.V., now mind you, I am not trying to be judgmental of this lady, but she didn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed. She did speak well and I think she got caught up in the hype and just went along with what ever the other jurors said, but that is just my opinion..
