Clerk to unseal settlement with Trayvon Martin's parents

That secret homeowners association settlement with Trayvon Martin's family may not remain secret much longer.

Seminole County Clerk of Courts Maryanne Morse has written a letter to Trayvon's family attorney, Benjamin Crump, telling him that she doesn't think it meets the standard of a confidential filing, so she intends to make it public in 10 days.

Even so, the total dollar figure paid out by the association likely will remain a secret. That's because Crump edited it out before he put the 12-page document in the court file Thursday.

Police Sergeant Fired Over Trayvon Martin Shooting Targets

A Florida police sergeant was fired for allegedly bringing Trayvon Martin shooting targets he purchased on the Internet to a firearms training session.

Sgt. Ron King, who had been with the Cape Canaveral Port Authority since January 2011, was fired Thursday, authorities said.

On April 4, when two fellow cops discovered King intended to use the Trayvon Martin shooting targets in their weapons exercise, they told him “they didn’t think it was appropriate,” said John Walsh, CEO of the Cape Canaveral Port Authority. The next day, he said the officers informed the Port Authority Police Chief, who called in internal affairs.

Authorities declined to say whether any of the targets were used.

Prosecutors add George Zimmerman's wife, mom, brother to witness list

Prosecutors have added George Zimmerman's wife, mother and brother to their witness list in the Trayvon Martin second-degree murder case, according to paperwork made public today.

It's not clear what testimony they might offer that would help convict Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer who had called police that night, describing Trayvon as suspicious.

His wife, Shellie Zimmerman, 26, was a student nurse before her husband's arrest and was not with him at the time of the shooting.

Lawyers back in court Tuesday for Trayvon Martin case

A court hearing Tuesday will decide the next steps in the murder case against the man accused of killing Florida teen Trayvon Martin

On Tuesday, a hearing in the case against the man charged with murdering Trayvon Martin will explore whether to unseal a wrongful-death settlement the teen's family received and whether George Zimmerman will waive his right to a self-defense hearing.

State prosecutors and defense attorneys plan to argue several issues in front of Circuit Judge Debra Nelson at 9 a.m. Tuesday, which is a little more than a month before Zimmerman's trial is set to begin.

One of the most important issues may be a motion by prosecutors for a "full inquiry" into whether Zimmerman will be waiving his right to an immunity hearing, which would allow him to claim self-defense before a judge without a jury.

The state wants to know for sure whether George Zimmerman plans to claim immunity from prosecution in the shooting of Trayvon Martin — before he goes to trial in the second-degree murder case.

Prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda's new motion asks Circuit Judge Debra Nelson to conduct a "full inquiry" of Zimmerman and confirm whether he's waiving his right to a hearing under Florida's "stand your ground" law.

In the case's early stages, defense attorney Mark O'Mara "made efforts to publicly assert that [Zimmerman] would be making a self-defense claim" and would request a hearing, the motion notes.

SANFORD -- The state attorney is now weighing in on George Zimmerman’s push to question Trayvon Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump.

A judge ruled earlier that Zimmerman’s attorneys could not question Crump before the trial. The defense wants to ask Crump, under oath, more about witness number eight, the young woman believed to be Trayvon’s girlfriend. Zimmerman’s defense team appealed the judge’s ruling.

Now, in a new 41 page legal response, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is asking the appeals court to agree with the judge’s decision, and to not allow the defense to question Crump in a deposition.

500 jury summons for George Zimmerman trial to go out soon

SEMINOLE COUNTY -- You might soon be getting a summons to be a part of the jury that will decide George Zimmerman’s fate if you live in Seminole County.

Jury notices will be going out soon to 500 people throughout the county.

But is it possible to have an unbiased jury decide the case?

News 13 legal analyst Mark NeJame said attorneys have a tough job ahead of them when picking a jury for the June trial.

George Zimmerman's defense team has filed a slew of new documents with the court in advance of next week's hearing in his second-degree murder case — including another request for sanctions against the prosecution.

Zimmerman's lawyer, Mark O'Mara, on Friday replied to a blistering filing issued by prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda last month.

The prosecutor, responding to a defense motion which argued the state delayed in turning over important information to Zimmerman and should be sanctioned, in March called O'Mara a grandstander who "courts anything resembling a microphone or camera."

SANFORD – Murder suspect George Zimmerman returns to court Tuesday for the first time in three months for what could be one of the most contentious pretrial hearings in the case.

SANFORD, Florida (AP) — The former neighborhood watch leader charged with fatally shooting a Florida teenager told a judge Tuesday that he agrees with his defense attorneys' decision not to seek an immunity hearing under the state's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law.

Under questioning from Circuit Judge Debra Nelson, Zimmerman repeatedly said "yes" to a series of questions asking if he was aware he was giving up the right to a hearing before his second-degree murder trial in June. A judge would have sole discretion in an immunity hearing to decide if Zimmerman is exempt from culpability in the shooting. A jury would make the determination in the murder trial.
