Shooting last night in a movie theater.Dark Night Rising.

Gunman entered from from through an exit; tossed in tear gas ?, and opened fire. Appears 10 dead and over 50 shot. Dead to include a 6 yr old child shot through the back multiple times; injured to include an infant of several months.

Suspect in a James Holmes, 20 some.

Bodies are still in theater as PD try to reconstruct. Suspect captured without incident in parking lot.
He had a riot type helmet, bullet proof vest, tear gas mask, and dressed in black. A long gun and two side arms recovered.

" Ten people died in the theater, two more died at nearby hospitals. The Police Department previously released a preliminary number of 14 dead, but only 12 can be confirmed at this time. Approximately 50 total persons were shot, including the deceased, police said."

"This is a horrific event," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said during a news conference.

The gunman, who was wearing a gas mask, reportedly set off a smoke or tear gas bomb then walked up to the front of the screen in one of the theaters and opened fire.

When the movie patrons realized the attack was real and not part of the movie, pandemonium erupted and they began to flee. The film continued to play on the screen as bloodied customers took refuge outside. According to witnesses on the scene, some of the bullets also went through the walls of an adjacent theater, injuring patrons.

“There was this one guy on all fours crawling. There was this girl spitting up blood. There were bullet holes in some people’s backs, in some people’s arms. There was one guy who was just stripped down to his boxers. It looked like he had been shot in the back or something,” Donovan Tate, who escaped from the packed theater with his girlfriend, told CBS4.

The suspect booby-trapped his Aurora apartment with sophisticated explosives, Oates told reporters.

"We are trying to determine how to disarm the flammable or explosive material. We could be here for hours or days," Oates said. "The pictures are fairly disturbing. It looks very sophisticated, how it's booby-trapped. It could be a very long wait."

Police lifted to his third-floor window by a crane searched the suspect's apartment building with a remote camera.

Firefighters, police and sheriff's deputies from several jurisdictions swarmed the scene with heavy weaponry and trucks from the bomb squad.

AURORA, Colo. -- A gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver at a midnight opening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

Moviegoers didn't know what was happening and some thought the attack was part of the show. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke at the front of the theater near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd.

"I told my friend `we've got to get out of here,' but then he shot people trying to go out the exits," Jennifer Seeger told NBC's "Today." She said the shooter made his way up the aisle, firing as he went, saying nothing.

A source confirms to E! News that NBC, CBS and ESPN were removing advertising for the would-be blockbuster from their airwaves. Although Warner Bros. has not asked for the ads to be pulled, but "fully supports any media partners who have decided to pull them."

Families, friends anxiously await word of missing moviegoers

Updated at 9:20 p.m. ET: Alex Sullivan was supposed to be celebrating his 27th birthday Friday, beginning with a midnight screening of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo.

"Oh man one hour till the movie and its going to be the best BIRTHDAY ever," he tweeted before heading to the theater where a black-clad gunman wearing body armor opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring 58.

Friends and family have not heard from him since.

2 Local Connections to Shooting in Colorado

There were two Chicago area residents among those in the Aurora, Colorado theater where James Holmes opened fire on the audience during a midnight screening of "The Dark Night Rises."

A former Cary resident, 27-year-old Steve Ostergaard escaped uninjured, while another man from Crystal Lake is missing, according to a Northwest Herald report.

(CNN) -- The 24-year-old man police say opened fire early Friday on a movie audience was a doctoral student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora.

Suspected gunman James Eagan Holmes was in the school's doctoral neuroscience program and was in the process of withdrawing at the time of the shooting, university officials said. Holmes had enrolled at the university in June 2011.

"As a grad student you have an opportunity to work for the university in the research program for the programs that you're studying," university spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said. "He worked in the neurosciences program. It is a paid position."

Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that he was among those killed in a deadly shooting rampage in suburban Denver after being notified by police.

Sullivan was in the crowded theater when a gunman barged in, set off a gas canister and began firing as spectators dove for cover.

I can't listen to any more of those 911 calls...I just watched an interview with one of the victims in the hospital. He played dead as the shooter made his way up the aisle. He was shot in the leg and shoulder.

This just leaves you heartsick. Does anyone know why the mother of this person said immediately "you have the right person"? I heard that initially but have not heard anything about that since.
This guy is about the right age for schizophrenia to surface if its going to. I am not giving him an excuse, but it will be interesting to find out if that is in the mix. His boobytrapped apartment is another disaster. I have cnn/live on, there is no audio, but I think they are deciding how to proceed with this. The people that live in that building and surrounding buildings are banned from their homes until further notice. If this doesn't go well, the homes could all go up in an explosion. It is just mind-boggling. One guy....so many victims.

The family of a Crystal Lake man who was in the Navy says he is one of the people who was killed in the Colorado shootings. In a statement, the Larimer family said that at about midnight a Navy notification team arrived at their home to tell them "our 27 year old son John was in fact one of the 12 killed at the theater in Aurora, Colorado."

His eyes look really buggy.Reminds me of the shooter in the Gifford case. I wonder if they are are on psychotropic drugs or something.

BTW, I just heard tonight, the judge who died in the Gifford case: he was calling for an investigation of the Fast And Furious.

Now, in 5 days, he UN is calling for a vote to outlaw all guns in the hands of civilians in all nations. (Canada is seeing unprecedented rise in shootings and bizarre murders. Guns are not allowed in Canada.)

What is bizarre, in these cases, including the zombie cases, is how passive the shooters are AFTER the shootings. They are supposedly so full of anger and rage and then they go passive? Turn themselves in with no resitance? This is rather hinky, IMO. (Thinking of the shooting in Norway? Sweden? as well. )

What is rather odd is how quickly LE respond. Had this been a home invasion or a liquor store robbery, the perp would be dead or the response time would be longer.

Also, reports are Holmes was unemployed and rec cash for working at college, and some sort of govt assistance. So how was he able to afford all the expenses incurred in this shooting? It is estimated over 20 thousand had to be paid for the vest, tear gas, ammo, guns, tear gas masks, the rigging out of his apart with all the different explosive devices.

And, why, when he DID have such a gunpower advantage did he calmly, meekly turn himself in? He never bothered to resist.

These cases are getting stranger and stranger.

Another thing of interest was the timing.
This was the first showing of this movie.
How would he know to walk in an start firing the guns just as that was playing across the screen?

I was thinking of the 20 minutes in thing because that's a big thing in scriptwriting. At 20 minutes you have to establish a big dramatic hook or you lose the audience. It's taught in all film schools, but who knows if he knew that.
What's really odd is that he was studying RNA analysis for gene markers for mental illnesses. In recent years they have been able to note striking differences in gene markers for schizophrenia from only blood samples. He was at the age where it strikes men full blown. He may have seen it coming and instead of getting help decided to go out in a blaze.
In terms of not trying to get away- if he had, it would have been well planned as everything else. This was his last act as the free man, he decided being behind bars was the price he had to pay for the infamy he will now enjoy.
Sometimes I wish we were like other countries and didnt let these kinds of people have pics and personal stories over the news. He's enjoying spitting on people and enlarging the story from his cell right now.
