WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Police this year conducted public searches for any sign of Susan Cox Powell, using cadaver dogs to search the vast desert around Topaz Mountain in Utah and rappelling into scores of mine shafts near Ely, Nev.

They also served a search warrant on the Puyallup home of the father of Josh Powell, the missing woman’s husband and the only person police have identified as a person of interest in the disappearance.

Finding any remains would end the 2-year-old mystery of Susan Powell’s disappearance, giving her family answers and providing something else: evidence.

It appears the father-in-law of missingPuyallup mom Susan Powell has eitherrun out of money, or friends.
Steven Powell, 61, has been in the PierceCounty Jail since his arrest on voyeurism and child pornography charges on Sept. 23, 2011.

"He's being held on $200,000 bail," said Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. "He'd have to convince a bail bondsman that he has collateral in the amount of $200,000."

PUYALLUP, Wash. — While Susan Cox Powell's parents are under a court mandated gag order and can't speak with the media, Susan's sister is not.

Denise Cox said Thursday Denise Cox says she's glad her nephews are safe, and she can't wait until Josh Powell is charged for what she believes he did to her sister.

"We don't miss that chance to remind them of their mom, because they were 2 and 4 when she went missing and I don't want them to forget her," Denise said, describing the time she spends with Susan's two young sons.

Tacoma, Wash.• A judge here on Wednesday ruled the children of missing woman Susan Cox Powell will remain in the custody of their maternal grandparents for now, ordering further evaluations of their father in light of explicit images found on a computer from the Powell’s West Valley City home.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Kathryn J. Nelson sided with recommendations that Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, remain in the Puyallup, Wash., home of Chuck and Judy Cox. Nelson also ordered Josh Powell to undergo a psychosexual exam and take a polygraph test to determine any knowledge he has related to images West Valley City police found on a computer confiscated during a 2009 search of the Powell home.

Those images are separate from the child pornography charges against Josh Powell’s father, Steve.

Oh my gosh! It is being reported that Josh Powell killed himself and his two boys at his home via a gas explosion.

The CPS worker brought the boys for a supervised visit. The boys went inside the home and Josh blocked the CPS worker from coming in. She smelled gas and called her supervisor.

The house exploded. Josh Powell and his (and Susan's) two sons are dead.

I'll find an article to post. We have company for the Super Bowl game so I don't have a lot of time.

Authorities believe an explosion and fire at the home of Josh Powell has killed him and his two children.

Police are awaiting verification from the Medical Examiner’s Office, but they believe the three dead are the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell and their two children, said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

The explosion occurred moments after a Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to the home for a supervised visit, said Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz.

GRAHAM, Wash. (AP) – A powerful house explosion killed the husband of a Utah woman who has been missing for two years, and his two young sons Sunday, moments after the boys arrived for a visit that was supposed to be supervised by a social worker.

The email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before the explosion, but he didn't see it two hours later, when others told him Josh and the boys had been killed. He said he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn't see this coming.

This is so tragic. If Josh Powell wanted to kill himself, then he should have done it but why did he have to kill his two sons!

This is devastating news. My heart breaks for Susan's parents.
This is just horrendous!

Any chances of Josh breaking and telling where Susan can be found are gone forever! But I doubt if Josh would have ever told Law Enforcement where Susan can be found.

It is a very tragic day. Two innocent, defenseless boys gone. Maybe they will be reunited with Susan in Heaven!

I read this earlier at Dau#2 bwfore Superbowl...I just got home and had to comment...What a horrible thing for Josh to do...I guess he couldn't stand the pressure of it all and rather take a chance of the boys remembering and spilling the beans and the possible outcome of a psych eval he thought he'd just get it over ASAP...I guess he knew he'd never regain full custody of the boys...I can't comprehend his mindset...God bless you boys...

Hi, I stumbled across this thread after the Dateline episode, while sick on my birthday I amused myself by reading up to see if some details I remembered reading were substantiated or not.

I live here in Salt Lake City and have participated in several missing person searches in recent years and I get very emotionally involved. While hiking, I've been keeping an eye out, just in case I saw anything.

I became aware of the case when it was still the entire family missing after police first entered the family home and have been outraged ever since.

My friend was picking me up yesterday for your Superbowl party (actually a video while the game happens, then watch commercials after) and she said "I've got bad news" Well for the first hour of the game, we were tuned to the local news instead. We watched our movie then put on the commercials, but we kept turning to the silent television tuned to the news.

I am so sickened that Josh took his kids with him. My mind accepts that he is dead fine, but I keep thinking "well now the sister can adopt the boys" then I have to remind myself there will be no adoption.

I don't know that we'll get answers from WVPD any time soon, I think there's every chance Steven Powell may face accesory before/after the fact and/or obstruction of justice charges, but maybe they'll release some of the information regarding Josh.

This is a horrific tragedy. The Powell boys, Branden and Charles, did not deserve this. If Josh wanted to "off" himself, fine, but to take the life of his two innocent, defenseless children indicates Josh was the narcissistic, evil person I thought he was. Just my opinion.

Things were really beginning to close in on Josh.

I can not understand why the Judge allowed visitation at the home of Josh Powell versus a neutral site. Personally, I feel the judge should not have allowed visits until Josh had completed all court ordered tests and the custody issue was resolved in court.

Police: Husband of missing young mom Susan Cox Powell kills himself and his two young boys in a massive explosion that set their entire home up in flames. Could this be an admission of guilt?

I read this last night right after the Superbowl. What a way to reality check my emotions about the Pats losing. I am still in shock that a father could do this to his children. He had already made their life hell enough.

On radaronline (same company as The Star) they reported that Susan's brother said the boys had been starting to open up more, with one even saying recently that Susan had been in the trunk when they went camping.

My heart breaks for the Cox family.

(CBS/AP) The two young sons of Susan Powell had started talking to their grandparents about things they remembered from the night their mother vanished before they were killed themselves in an alleged murder-suicide orchestrated by their father, the lawyer for Susan Powell's parents said.

Charlie and Braden Powell's grandparents said Monday the boys had not wanted to go visit their father, and described an ominous drawing the younger boy had made. Chuck Cox took the photo above of his grandson Charlie, 7, just a few days ago. The boy had said he wanted a photo next to his mother, Susan Powell.



Charlie and Braden Powell did not want to see their father Sunday during a court-ordered visitation, the boys' grandparents Chuck and Judy Cox said Monday.

The grandparents aren't sure why the boys didn't want to see Josh Powell at his Graham rental house. But the Coxes insisted the children go on the visitation because of the court order, which the boys did accompanied by a state-provided escort.

It was during that visitation that police say Josh Powell set the home on fire, killing Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, and himself. Authorities said Monday they believed Josh Powell had planned the deadly fire for some time, dropping toys and books at Goodwill and sending final emails to friends and acquaintances.

Detectives found evidence of 10 gallons of gasoline inside the home. A five-gallon can was spread throughout the house and used as an accelerant in the huge blaze. Another can was found near the bodies.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer called the deadly fire "a deliberate, planned-out event."

Before setting the fire, Troyer said, Powell had sent emails to his lawyer, pastor, friends and relatives, telling some, "I'm sorry. I can't live without my boys." He also left instructions on how to take care of his "final business," according to Troyer.

He said none of the emails mentioned Powell's wife and the mother of the boys, Susan Powell, 28, who has been missing since December 2009.

Updated at 10:07 p.m. ET: The preliminary autopsy results of Josh Powell and his two sons show that they suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning, and the boys also suffered from other injuries.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner tells KING 5 TV that 7-year-old Charles suffered "chop" injuries to the neck and 5-year-old Braden suffered similar injuries to the neck and head. Both the wounds and carbon monoxide poisoning were contributing factors in their deaths, the medical examiner said.

Pierce County sheriff officials say a hatchet was recovered next to the bodies in the home.

Josh Powell tried to kill his two young sons with a hatchet before the flames of the fiery explosion he had ignited engulfed them all, police said today.

Powell, 36, failed to kill his sons Charles, 7, and Braden, 5, but still wounded them horribly before they died -- smoke in their lungs -- in the gas-fueled explosion Sunday, according to police and the medical examiner.

...damn...this is rightly called evil...

Its being said that Josh was afraid of what the boys might say and so he killed them to avoid any consequences. But, if he would have just killed himself then he would not have to face consequences. I wonder if these boys may have had information on their jailed grandfather and Josh did this for his sake. He and his father had one sick relationship if sharing Susan sexually didn't sound an alarm to Josh.

Josh sent an email saying he couldn't live without the boys, a narcissist like him would believe the boys couldn't live without him. Plus killing the boys was his ultimate "screw you!" to the Coxes. I don't know why he had such a vendetta against the Coxes, it seems completely irrational, like they were trying to destroy him, but Josh was doing that to himself.

This totally makes me sick. Josh obviously murdered Susan. Why the hell was he allowed anywhere near those children? I'm sick to death of killers being rewarded for managing to hide the bodies of their victims. Of course Josh didn't have the decency to take his own life and let his sons live, and of course he didn't have the decency to admit what he did to Susan and tell her family the location of her body before committing his final cowardly act.

What is being done to protect all the children who have missing mothers, brothers, or sisters and are forced to visit, or even worse, be in the custody of the people most likely responsible? Obviously the sad answer is that nothing is being done to protect them. I really hope we don't have to read about anymore tragedies like this, but some of these family court judges seem to like to roll the dice with children's lives. I pray that God watches over the children of Michelle Parker and all the other children in similar situations and keeps them safe.

I feel terrible for the Cox family. They did not deserve to have an evil monster murder their daughter and grandchildren. I pray they find the strength to get through this.

Reporting from Seattle— Charles and Judith Cox knew what the professional psychologists said — that their grandsons would be safe with their father, that Josh Powell would present no threat during the boys' court-ordered visits.

And yet. Could the professionals not see what the Coxes saw? That their daughter had been missing since 2009, and Powell was the leading person of interest in the case? What about the family stories that Powell, as a teenager, had smashed his sister's hamster to death, had threatened his mother with a knife?

Charles Cox said he had been on the verge many times of confronting his son-in-law with the blatant conflicts in his stories about what happened when Susan Powell disappeared. But he stopped every time with a nagging fear that Powell might react unpredictably — might even take it out on the children.

"I had this feeling that if he felt he was going to actually lose, that he was going to go to jail and not have a chance of freedom, he had the capacity to tell the kids, 'Here's some special Kool-Aid' or something, and just kill them and everyone in the family," Cox said Monday, a day after Powell apparently attacked his boys with a sharp object during a court-ordered visit and then set a raging, fatal fire.

The woman who took Charlie and Braden Powell on their last drive was a visitation supervisor who worked for Foster Care Resource Network, one of hundreds of businesses that contract with the state to provide social services.

She had known Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, since November.

The children were under the state’s supervision not because their mother, Susan Cox Powell was missing, and their father, Josh Powell, was a person of interest in the case. They were there because they were living with their father and paternal grandfather, Steve Powell, when he was arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography.

After his arrest, the children were put in foster care for several weeks until the courts cleared them to live with their maternal grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox of Puyallup.

In all that family tragedy, their visit supervisor’s primary concern was their welfare.

In the months leading up to the fiery blast, one of the boys drew a picture for his first-grade teacher at the beginning of the school year that Steve Downing, a lawyer for the parents of Powell's wife, said could shed light on the circumstances of her disappearance.

"His father was driving the van and he and his brother were in the back seat. His mother was in the trunk," Downing said of the drawing.

When the teacher asked the boy about the drawing, "Charlie told her, 'Then my mom and dad got out of the car and my mom got lost,'" Downing told Reuters.

The storage unit is located somewhere around Puyallup, but the exact details are not known yet.

Prosecutors in Pierce County say they would consider making a deal with the father-in-law of missing Puyallup mom Susan Powell, who has been charged with voyeurism and possession of child pornography, in exchange for information about her disappearance.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told 97.3 KIRO FM in an email Tuesday that his office would "listen" if Steven Powell, his attorney or Utah law enforcement proposed such a deal.
