Police scaling back search for Susan Powell: Family asking for "acts of kindness"
This Christmas Eve West Valley Police confirm that they will scale back their investigation for Susan Powell over the holiday. Meanwhile, family and friends of Susan are asking for people to step up and doing something nice for someone else in her honor.
Detectives have been working around the clock since December 7th searching for answers in Susan's disappearance. Captain Tom McLachlan said some of his investigators will take tomorrow off to spend time with their families.
Yesterday, Susan's family sent out a press release asking those who want to honor Susan to go out and do some "acts of kindness" for others. People went straight to work donating to families in need.
There are also questions surrounding some of the anonymous emails that have been reported from Susan saying she would never commit suicide and that she was afraid of her husband. Police won't discuss any emails or other evidence gathered in this investigation.

Constant new leads coming in over Susan Powell case
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police are getting new leads in the case of missing West Valley woman Susan Powell. And that’s bringing comfort to her family and one of Susan's closest friends.
Police are staying tight lipped about any new findings coming in; in fact ABC 4 has learned the search warrants for the Powell home have now been sealed off. But police are saying they're constantly getting new tips.
It's now been three weeks, and no sign of Susan Powell. Hope of finding her since she disappeared from her West Valley home may seem bleak, but police said fresh leads are coming in all the time.
“It's been a continuous stream,” said Capt. Tom McLachlan, West Valley Police.
In fact, police said they're getting tips about Susan's disappearance from all sorts of sources.
“People have called in leads, we get leads over the internet, some of them have information that we deem as high priority and some of them have lower priority, but we follow up on everyone of them,” said McLachlan.
Susan's family and one of her closest friends Kiirsi Hellewell said they're encouraged from the constant energy police are getting in the case.
“Because I know they're working hard, but it's nice to hear confirmation of that, that the case is still going on, and they're still looking,” said Kiirsi Hellewell, Susan Powell’s best friend.
Hellewell said she's also finding comfort through the internet.
“People all over the country and all over the world are constantly sending messages saying we're praying for you guys, we're posting her flyer even here in Europe, don't give up, keep going, we believe that she'll be found, and it's really encouraging,” she said.
But right now police said everything that's coming in about Susan hasn't changed the nature of the case.
“This is a suspicious missing person’s case, but like I say it's still a missing person’s case,” said McLachlan.
One thing Susan's friends and family are doing to help police keep up the constant stream of new leads is they're planning a media blitz in the next few days to get Susan's picture in every house in America.

Search warrants relating to missing Utah Mom sealed
Search warrants in the case of a 28-year-old Utah woman missing for three weeks have been sealed.
SALT LAKE CITY, Ut. (KKCO) - Search warrants in the case of a 28-year-old Utah woman missing for three weeks have been sealed.
Susan Powell was last seen Dec. 7, when her husband Josh Powell says he left their suburban home in West Valley city about 12:30 a.m. to take their two boys camping in freezing conditions.
Click here to find out more!
She was reported missing the same day when she failed to show up for her stockbroker job and her kids weren't dropped off at day care.
Josh Powell returned later that evening to find his wife missing. He has been named a person of interest in the case, but not a suspect.
Police have searched the Powell home and van. The 3rd District Court Clerk's office said Monday that the search warrants have been sealed by a judge.
Warrants sealed in Susan Powell case, newspaper plans challenge
Court » The Tribune, in a motion it intends to file today, wants to have that information made public.
Police and prosecutors don't want the public to know what they took from Susan Powell's house and husband.
State court clerks on Monday confirmed search warrants in the Powell case have been sealed. A lawyer for The Salt Lake Tribune said Monday the newspaper plans to file a motion today to have those warrants disclosed.
"Public access helps ensure accuracy, accountability and fairness in the court systems simply because it is a lot easier for abuses to occur in secret than in the light of day," Tribune attorney Michael O'Brien said Monday. "Access is especially important in prominent cases, such as the Powell case, because the public is paying more attention to how well the court and law enforcement systems work in such cases."
West Valley City police referred comment to prosecutors. A spokesman for the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office declined to comment.
Police have said they executed three search warrants in the Powell case. Two warrants were to search the Powell home and van; one warrant was to draw blood and other biological samples from her husband, Joshua Powell.
Search warrants in Utah typically include written statements by police officers explaining why they have cause to search. After a search warrant is executed, it is returned to a courthouse with an inventory of what police seized. The warrant and inventory log are made public 20 days later.
Brian Barnard, a Salt Lake City attorney who in 2004 sued the state court system over its handling of search warrants, said law enforcement can only seal a search warrant by showing a judge disclosure would harm an investigation. That might mean tipping off coconspirators or identifying a police informant, Barnard said.
But Barnard said it's rare for law enforcement to seek such seals because word of the search usually spreads.
"The proverbial cat is out of the bag to someone," Barnard said.
Susan Powell was reported missing on Dec. 7. Joshua Powell said he took their two sons, Charlie, 4, and Braden, 2, on a camping trip in Utah's snowy west desert the previous night. Susan »Powell's friends and family have acknowledged their marital problems, but have also said she would never leave her children.
Family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford said Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan Powell's parents, spoke with police investigators Monday and were told there were no new developments in the three-week-old case.
The Coxes, who live in Pullayup, Wash., were able to see their grandsons on Christmas and hope to have another visit soon, Gifford said. Joshua Powell traveled to Washington before Christmas with the boys and is staying with his father, who also lives there.
Gifford said Chuck Cox will stay in Pullayup to care for his wife Judy, who is not in good health, until there is a "reason or role" for him to fill by returning to Utah.
Gifford said that West Valley City police are receiving dozens of leads a day and are devoting "unfathomable" hours to running those tips down.
"We feel like we're trying to put together a puzzle without all the pieces," Gifford said. "Until we get all that information, we are going to proceed and take actions as though Susan is being held some place against her will, and doing whatever we can to help the police department."
She said many individuals and groups have offered to help search or loan equipment that could be used in a search. Gifford said the family is asking that such efforts be coordinated with the West Valley City Police Department so as to not jeopardize any future court case.
Kiirsi Hellewell, one of Susan Powell's best friends, responded in a post on her personal blog Monday to criticism that there has been no coordinated search for the missing mother.
"There are things the general public has never even thought of about this investigation," Hellewell wrote.
Hellewell said in her post she has reasons for believing that Susan "has been taken against her will and is most likely not in the state of Utah. This is why I personally am not out searching the desert or mountains with my three little kids. I won't waste my time or resources fruitlessly looking for someone who may not even be in the state. Instead, what I believe to be the greatest help here is the vast power of the Internet."
Hellewell also helps run a Facebook page dedicated to the effort to find Susan Powell.
"I believe and hope that Susan is still alive," she wrote. "And even if she isn't, I also believe that someone, somewhere, knows or has seen something that will help us find her. So yes, I believe I am not wasting my time by doing everything I can do -- especially online -- to spread her name and picture to the far corners of the globe."
The Friends and Family of Susan Powell site is organizing a social media blitz Jan. 4-6 to spread word about the missing woman.

Re: Susan Powell -- Missing 12/7/09
I pray to God she is ok. It doesn't look good though. Peace be with her family. I hope they at least get enough evidence to prove who is involved, I don't think any of us would be surprised if it is her husband.
The only thing else I can say is....Those poor boys! They are probably so confused that their Mommy is not there. What a horrible thing for a kid to face at Christmas. Everyone knows when kids are little they favor their Mom. How sad....they need her right now...I hope she is found soon. One way or the other, I hope she is found, I don't want those boys to ever think that she left them.

Social Media Plays a Major Role in Susan Powell Case
http://newsblaze.com/story/20091230091524kays.nb/topstory.html
New information in the missing persons case of Susan Powell is scarce. Speculation on the internet and TV suggests that the West Valley Police are carefully making their case. This kind of media blitz is nothing like anything that they have ever experienced. They feel the pressure and must get it right, a picture perfect investigation.
State court clerks confirmed on Monday that search warrants in the Powell case have been sealed. The Salt Lake Tribune has filed a motion to have the warrants opened. Michael O'Brian, a Tribune attorney, said: "Access is especially important in prominent cases, such as the Powell case, because the public is paying more attention to how well court and law enforcement systems work in such cases." (Warrants sealed in Susan Powell case, newspaper plans challenge by Nate Carlisle and Brooke Adams-The Salt Lake Tribune-12/29/2009)
The police had issued three search warrants, two were at the Powell home and one was to draw blood and other biological samples from 'the person of interest,' husband Joshua Powell. The contents of the warrants should be made public after 20 days, but the tension is mounting to make an arrest. (ibid-The Salt Lake Tribune)
The DNA tests and other tests from the lab will take a long time to produce results. I read that the Salt Lake City lab is understaffed, and they are under pressure to 'get it right.' Remember how Johnny Cochran nailed the L.A. prosecutors when he proved that the chain of evidence was tainted? Prosecutors must be able to demonstrate every move, every change in the providence of evidence.
Last night on the HLN show Issues with Jane Velez Mitchell (guest host last night) one guest suggested that the West Valley Police have other 'persons of interest,' besides Josh Powell. I don't see any way that there could be anyone else? Perhaps this is just a strategy by the police to get Josh's guard down, to make him calm down and possibly say the wrong thing.
This coming Monday, January 4th, the Friends of Susan Powell hope to organize a ribbon campaign to accompany a social media blitz. Kiirsi Hellewell, a close friend of Susan's, is organizing the ribbon campaign, and says that lavender and sage green were Susan's favorite colors. The social media blitz will last for 72 hours and will utilize Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. (Ribbon campaign planned for Susan Powell by Pat Reavy-Deseret News-12/29/2009)
We have never witnessed this type of coverage for a missing persons case. We now have more social media than ever before. Think back on the Scott Peterson case, for example. And people from all over the world want to get involved. Everyone is their own Sherlock Holmes, Johnny Cochran or Walter Cronkite.
I have seen up to 40 or 50 (even 100) comments on many of the Susan Powell articles that I have read. It's almost getting to be 'social network vigilantism' though? The West Valley Police must be quaking from the tremendous pressure? I myself am afraid they'll drop the ball. Some facts have just disappeared, like the two fans on the wet spot. Is this now a three ring circus' that is spinning out of control?
I am linking the full six minute pristine 'navy blue cap' interview with Josh Powell, that was conducted on December 10th. After each viewing it takes on different meanings.

Josh Powell prepares to leave Utah for good
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=9261687

WEST VALLEY CITY -- After spending weeks in Washington with his family, the husband of Susan Powell returned to Utah to pack up and move out of the state for good.
West Valley City police say Powell has the right to move out of the state because he is not a suspect in his wife's disappearance.
"Legally he has that freedom of movement," said Capt. Tom McLachlan with the West Valley City Police Department.
Friends and neighbors who have been searching for Susan Powell say her husband's decision to leave the home where she was last seen is frustrating. Neighbors say Josh's decision to move to Washington is a little unexpected.
Police say the move doesn't really affect their investigation, because he's been uncooperative the whole time.
"Whether or not he's up there talking to us or down here not talking to us, it really doesn't make that much difference," McLachlan says.
It's been exactly one month since the disappearance of 28-year-old Susan Powell and police say they still have yet to formally talk to the one person who saw her last.
"We would love to talk to Joshua and we would love to verify what he has initially told us, but he has removed himself from our ability to do that," says McLachlan.
Josh Powell has been called the only person of interest in his wife's disappearance, but police say that doesn't mean he is required to stay in Utah. Close to three weeks ago he took his two boys to Washington state to stay with his dad for the holidays, but has now decided to make that permanent.
"I was really surprised because that's his wife," says neighbor Betty Trujillo.
Trujillo doesn't agree with Josh's decision to move. As one who has been searching for Susan, she feels he should be doing the same.
"You would think he would be out there searching for her and waiting for her to come home," Trujillo says. "If anything you're going to be there for her and with him leaving that's surprising to me."
Trujillo watched as Josh returned to his West Valley City home Wednesday. She says he and his brother pulled into his garage and shut the door. She says his brother finally emerged from the house later that afternoon, when Tim Peterson showed up to remove a swing set from the backyard.
"He's not looking for his wife. That much I know," Peterson told KSL Wednesday. "I just want to make sure I get my playground, OK, so I can give it to someone else in the ward."
Peterson did not get the swing set back. Powell's brother called police and reported he was trespassing.
Josh's presence back in the neighborhood is another reminder to neighbors that Susan is still out there. Trujillo says even though it's been a month, her disappearance is still fresh in her mind.
"To me it does, I think it's going to be until we find her," she says.
Police say the recent media blitz to help find Susan has resulted in dozens of calls. They wouldn't say whether or not any of them were credible leads into her disappearance, but they did say they still have several tips to follow up on.

Susan Powell is Missing: Husband Another Scott Peterson?
Joshua Powell's Story of Camping Trip Drawing Suspicion in Susan Powell Disappearance
December 21, 2009 by saul relative
The Susan Powell disappearance reads like so many others before it. Susan Powell, a 28-year-old stockbroker from West Valley City, Utah, went missing sometime after her husband said he last saw her on December 7. Joshua Powell, the husband, told police that his wife had not been feeling well and he had left her early that morning and took his two children camping. He went camping with his two young children, ages 2 and 4, in freezing weather and came home rather conveniently after Susan Powell had been reported missing by the family babysitter who grew alarmed when the children weren't dropped off later that same Monday at their regularly appointed time.
Susan Powell's car, her purse and her cell phone were all found at the Powell home when police broke in looking for her. Common consensus maintains that Susan Powell would never leave without her cell phone while her children were gone. And why leave without her purse?
For that matter, why didn't Joshua Powell notify the babysitter that the children would not be dropped off at the babysitter's Monday? Was he relying on his wife to inform her?
Authorities have also noted Joshua Powell's reticence when speaking with them. He retained a lawyer after the second round of questions and missed a scheduled third session. Police became suspicious of Powell's camping story early and now consider him a "person of interest."
According to The Salt Lake Tribune, various media outlets are reporting that friends of Susan Powell's have expressed concern about the couple's marriage. The two had been weathering some financial and emotional storms of late, it would seem.

Susan Powell's father asks for people's prayers

The Salt Lake Tribune

The father of Susan Powell, a missing West Valley City woman, told followers of a Facebook page that police recently have received results on some forensic evidence in the case.
Chuck Cox posted on the Friends and Family of Susan Powell Facebook page that some, but not all, forensic evidence is in, but added that police won't comment on any specifics as "it could impact the ongoing investigation."
Several calls to the West Valley City Police Department went unreturned Friday night.
On the Facebook page, Cox wrote that although the missing 28-year-old woman's husband, Josh Powell, has moved to Washington with his two young sons, the West Valley City Police Department is still hard at work.
"If anything, it provides more determination and more law enforcement officers, because we have law enforcement in Washington State also," Cox wrote.
However, there's "still no cooperation or help from Josh [Powell]" he wrote.
Cox asked people to continue to pray for his daughter.
"We are still confident that Susan will be found, and very hopeful that she will be found alive," he wrote. "Make sure that people know she is still missing and make sure no one gives up hope."

1 of 2 Powell Facebook pages deleted

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Facebook page related to the disappearance of Susan Powell has been deleted.
Two rival Facebook pages with information about the West Valley City mother's disappearance were available on the social networking site.
The group page titled "Susan Powell" had about 6,000 members. The Salt Lake Tribune reports it has been deleted.
The other page, set up by Susan's family, is 42,000 members strong and still available on the site.
The page that was deleted frequently featured posts accusing Susan's husband, Josh Powell, of having a role in his wife's disappearance. The family page tends to filter those kinds of comments.
Usually, a page must be reported for it to be deleted. But a spokesperson for Susan's parents in Washington state says the family did not complain about the page.
A Facebook spokesperson tells the Tribune the reason the page was deleted is unclear for now because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday.
Susan Powell has been missing since Dec. 7. She was last seen by her husband, who said he left on a winter camping trip with the couple's children at about 12:30 a.m. that day.

NEW YORK (CBS) Add one more mystery to the case of Susan Powell, a Utah mom who disappeared last December. Now, a Facebook page dedicated to finding the mother of two is also missing.
According to the page's administrator, Leslie Bleak, Facebook deleted the page entitled "Susan Powell," which had 6,000 members, last week after it had drawn complaints, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Tuesday.
Bleak's page became a forum of speculation as many of the postings accused Powell's husband, Joshua Powell, of having a role in the disappearance, according to the Utah paper. Bleak told the paper last month that she started the online social networking group because of speech restrictions on other Facebook pages dedicated to Susan Powell.
She also told the paper she started receiving angry messages, including one from the Destiny Search Project, accusing her of violating copyright laws by posting Powell's missing person's flier.
A different page created by Susan Powell's family, which has 42,000 members, tends to filter and delete offensive comments.
Typically, a page must be reported to Facebook for it to be deleted. A spokeswoman for Susan Powell's parents told The Salt Lake Tribune Monday that the family did not complain about Bleak's page.

Susan Powell's son, then husband, mark birthdays
Washington » Joshua Powell invites missing woman's parent to party.

His mother is not around to celebrate with him, but Susan Powell's oldest son, Charlie, turned 5 years old on Tuesday.
A Facebook page dedicated to the missing West Valley City woman was filled with birthday wishes for her son, Charlie, on Tuesday. Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, tried to arrange a time for Charlie to come to their home for a party, said Shelby Gifford, a friend of and spokeswoman for the Coxes.
The boy's father, Joshua Powell, declined the request, but invited the Coxes to a birthday party at his father's home this weekend, Gifford said. She added that the Coxes have not seen the Powell boys since before Joshua Powell returned to Utah to move the weekend of Jan. 9.
"The Cox Family appreciates everybody's concern for Susan, Charlie and Braden," Gifford said in an e-mail to The Tribune . "We continue to be in contact with investigators and we are grateful for all their hard work and long hours. Additionally, we know friends and supporters of Susan continue to work hard to spread the word about her disappearance. We express our gratitude to them as well."
Charlie and his 2-year-old brother, Braden, are in Washington with their father, Joshua Powell. Joshua Powell turns 34 years old on Wednesday.
Susan Powell was reported missing Dec. 7. Police have said Joshua Powell told them he took their two sons camping at 12:30 a.m. that day, leaving his wife at the family's West Valley City home. Police have only named Joshua Powell a person of interest in the disappearance.

Josh Powell moving to Washington (update)
http://www.michellesigona.com/2010/01/josh-powell-moving-to-washington/
1:46 p.m. EST – Josh Powell, person of interest in the disapperace of his wife Susan Powell is reportedly packing up and moving his family to Washington state. Josh has been staying in Puyallup, Washington with his family over the holidays, and has apparently made the decision to be with his family. I can confirm at this hour, Josh is in Utah, and his children are with his family back in Washington. The family mini-van is inside the Powell family garage at this time, and I can tell you that Josh has reached out to friends, neighbors and church friends to help him move this weekend. Investigators have served multiple serach warrants on the Powell home, one for the family vehicle, and one to retreive Josh Powell’s DNA. Police say they are still awaiting DNA results from the crime lab on evidence seized from the warrants. While the family van was being searched, investigators told me Josh rented a car, and drove for several hundred miles. They do not know where he went, and they are working to figure out where he went during that time.
Since Susan’s disapperance, friends have come forward anoymously to give police copies of e-mails ils and information to help police figure out the relationship between Susan and her husband. On Monday, Susan’s friends and family launched a 72 hour media blitz to help find the missing mom. The goal of the blitz was to get as much attention and coverage for Susan Powell who went missing on December 7, 2009 from her home in Utah. I spoke with investigators, and they feel the push is worked – they have in fact received new leads on this case. The effort targeted facebook, twitter, and youtube to get the word out about this missing mom. Right now, there are more than 36,000 members for the “Friends and Family of Susan Powell” facebook page. Monday morning, the site only had 17,000. Josh Powell, Susan’s husband, is not a suspect at this time, but he is a person of interest. Although Josh is not considered a suspect, I am also told that he is not cooperating with the investigation at all, and will not answer specifics about his wife’s disappearance.
Friends of Susan told me that she loved to do acts of kindness to help others. Susan worked 4 – 10 hour days and had off Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s to spend with her children. On those days, she would often visit a close friend in a wheelchair, and give her a pedicure, she would bake bread for others, or pick a pumpkin from her garden and make someone a pie. She was always giving and doing for those around her. Over the Christmas holiday, Susan’s friends asked the public to do acts of kindness for others, and many responded with the things they were inspired to do. Some gave families a Christmas, other volunteered at homeless shelters, and in many cases there were multiple days of kindness, not just one.
BACKGROUND:
Assistant Chief Black says there’s enough circumstantial evidence to indicate that this is uncharacteristic of Susan to just disappear, and they are exploring the possibility that foul play could be involved. They don’t want to treat this case early on that Susan just up and walked away, they want to take all accounts into play in case this turns into a criminal investigation in the end.“We wish he (Josh) would be more of a partner with us to help find his wife, and to have an extensive interview with us about a number of other questions,” says Assistant Chief Black. It’s been nearly impossible to verify the husband’s alibi that he was camping with his children the night his wife went missing, because the area where Josh says he went is vast, desert and mountain terrain. Unfortunately, several snowstorms have come and gone through the area since.
On Monday, December 14, 2009, I spoke to West Valley City Assistant Police Chief Black, and he went into the detail the timeline surrounding Susan’s disappearance. So far, this is what we have since Susan was last seen on evening of December 6th into the early morning hours of December 7, 2009.
Sunday, December 6, 2009: According to the Assistant Chief, Susan was at home this evening, and had a friend over for dinner. She went to bed, and was last seen by her husband Josh around 12:30 a.m. sleeping. Her husband, told investigators he took his children, ages 2 and 4, camping after his wife went to sleep. There was snow on the ground, and it was extremely cold. Susan and Josh were both due at work first thing in the morning.
Monday, December 7, 2009: Authorities say Susan and Josh do not show up for work, and her children were not dropped off at daycare. Susan’s family was notified and they called police. At that point, investigators made entry into their home to check their welfare. When investigators went inside the house, they realized no one was there. Assistant Chief Black says the officers backed out, and obtained a search warrant to come back in.
Monday, December 7, 2009: Around 5 p.m., authorities say Josh arrives back at home with both of his children. He is questioned by investigators, but according to Assistant Chief Black, “he did not offer an explanation as to where his wife was.” Josh only told investigators he last saw his wife at 12:30 a.m.
Tuesday, December 8, 2009: Police confirm in the evening hours, Josh rented a car in Salt Lake City and drove for hundreds of miles. There is a period of time when cops cannot account for Josh’s whereabouts.
Wednesday, December 9, 2009: Police served a search warrant on the home, and took out items that belong to the family.
Monday, December 14, 2009: Josh Powell hired a defense attorney in Utah.
Wednesday, December 16, 2009: Josh Powell is named a “person of interest” by police, and he submits a DNA sample to investigators.
Assistant Chief Black told me investigators could not find a camp site, there was snow on the ground at the time she disappeared, and the family could have gone camping anywhere from 100 miles of their home. He emphasized a camp site has not been located. At this time, Josh Powell is NOT considered a person of interest in Susan’s disappearance, or a suspect in this case. Investigators say they want to speak to him again, and they want to question other people as well. Please help give Susan’s family the answers they so desperately need.

Police impound car of missing Utah woman's husband for second search
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=9507165
January 29th, 2010 @ 6:10pm

WEST VALLEY CITY -- Family and friends of Josh Powell -- the husband of missing woman Susan Powell -- told KSL News that Josh's car was impounded by police early Friday evening. They say investigators took the car for a second search on an existing warrant. Police have not yet confirmed this information.
Meanwhile, Josh is back in Utah. He returned to his West Valley City home Thursday night after moving to Washington earlier this month.
A close friend said Josh Powell is planning to rent out the house where he and Susan lived.
Friend and neighbor John Hellewell has kept in touch with Josh and talked to him on the phone several times last week. He gave Josh a ride from the airport around 9:30 Thursday night.
Hellewell said Josh was concerned there would be reporters waiting for him outside his home and was happy when there was no media there.
He said when Josh saw the decorations for Susan outside the house, he said he thought they were a good idea.
Hellewell explained why Josh was back in town. He said, "His plan is to finish his deck and to try and get his basement worked on so he can get renters into the house. When I asked how long he would be here, he said as short as possible, so as quickly as he can get the work done."
As for Josh's reasons behind renting the home, Hellewell told KSL, "[Josh] needs the money, and he said that he hopes that Susan will be found and that they'll be able to go back to living in that house afterwards."
Hellewell says that was the only thing Josh has said about Susan.
Josh's homecoming was a bit of a surprise to his family. Brother-in-law Kirk Graves says he knew Josh planned to come home to work on his house but didn't expect him so soon.
Graves says Josh has shown no emotion. Their relationship, he says, has been strained, partly because of that. "We wish he would be more open, that he would talk to the press, that he would get his story out there," he said.
Graves was in Washington last week and spent time with Powell's two boys. He says they seemed to be doing all right, considering the circumstances. According to Graves, one of Susan's boys did say his mom was missing.
On Wednesday, friends and family gathered at the Powell home to put up ribbons, streamers and signs to remind people that Susan is still missing and possibly alive.
Susan has been missing since the first week of December, and family and friends don't want people to forget about her.

Family: Missing mom's Facebook support page disappears
Story Updated: Jan 30, 2010 at 4:27 PM PST
PUYALLUP, Wash. - A Facebook page devoted to missing mom Susan Powell has disappeared, and now her family and friends are asking the social networking site to restore the page.
The Facebook page contained information and an extensive photo gallery of Susan Powell, a 28-year-old mother of two from Puyallup who moved to Utah with her husband Joshua after their marriage.
Susan was last seen Dec. 6, 2009, by her husband at their home in West Valley, Utah. He told police he saw her just before he took their two young children on a midnight camping trip in snowy conditions. When they got back, he says she was gone.
Police now consider Joshua a person of interest in her disappearance.
The "Friends & Family of Susan Powell Facebook page" was launched to aid in the effort to find her, and had attracted more than 45,000 members, said Shelby Gifford, spokeswoman for the family.
The page contained information about Susan and her disappearance, and was a place where members of Facebook could come for up-to-date information about the case.
"An entire database of people willing to help with searches and provide other services was deleted from Facebook as of approximately 2 p.m. Friday," Gifford said.
She says Susan's Facebook page has also been plagued by a "troll" who visited the page under assumed identities, even pretending to be Susan Powell herself at one point.
She said Susan Powell's family and the page administrators have made repeated complaints to Facebook and have not received a response.
"Obviously, our reason for using Facebook is that it can reach such a large audience quickly," said James Hofheins, social media coordinator for the Friends & Family of Susan Powell group. "Their lack of response is causing great frustration among Susan’s friends, family and supporters."
In the meantime, a new page called "Friends & Family of Susan Powell Part Two" has now been launched to replace the original page, but it lacks much of the photos, information and membership.
The Facebook page vanished a day after police in suburban Salt Lake City searched a minivan belonging to Susan Powell's husband. There was no word on what, if anything, was found.
Joshua Powell moved back to Puyallup after his wife disappeared and is selling the couple's home in Utah.

I wonder why they just pulled Susan's Facebook page down. It takes a lot of effort to set up a Facebook page, post a bunch of pictures and recruit 45,000 people. It's going to make people not want to use the service if all their hard work just disappears in the blink of an eye.

Susan's Facebook is back up now. Facebook said it was only down due to a technical issue. Here is a link to her page.

Thanks for posting her page, J4A. And can you believe the nerve of people, trolls and someone posing as her on that page! That is utterly disgusting, what is wrong with people.

Newspaper's lawyer will look at sealed documents in Susan Powell disappearance investigation
Arguments pending » Police have served at least four warrants.
By Nate Carlisle
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 02/05/2010 06:14:09 PM MST
A judge on Friday permitted a Salt Lake Tribune attorney to view sealed documents concerning the Susan Powell police investigation.
Those documents may include search warrants, which have been shielded from public view. The Tribune has filed a lawsuit to have them disclosed.
Third District Court Judge Judith Atherton told the newspaper's attorney, Mike O'Brien, he may view the materials but cannot share or discuss them with The Tribune .
Atherton's decision came at the end of a short hearing Friday to schedule written and oral arguments for the lawsuit. The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office has until March 5 to file a written argument for keeping the search warrants sealed and O'Brien must respond 10 days later.
Deputy District Attorney Sandi Johnson said she also will argue The Tribune does not have standing to file a lawsuit over the warrants. Atherton said Johnson may make that argument, but the judge sounded suspicious.
"The press has a pretty strong interest in access," Atherton said.
O'Brien said he needed to view sealed documents in order to argue the merits of the case.
"I'm good, but I'm much better when I know what I'm arguing against," a smiling O'Brien told Atherton.
After the hearing, O'Brien said he will view the petition, which sealed the search warrants and perhaps the search warrants themselves.
West Valley City police have served at least four search warrants in their investigation of what happened to Powell: two on the family home and car, one on the car alone and one to take biological samples from Powell's husband, Joshua Powell.
O'Brien said the Deseret News and the Society of Professional Journalists also will join the lawsuit as plaintiffs.

WEST VALLEY CITY - Family and friends of a missing West Valley City woman, Susan Powell, want to keep her story in the media spotlight. They will kick off a week of service to honor a favorite pastime of Powell's on Monday. "She was always making baby blankets. She was always making homemade gifts and items for other people," JoVonna Owings said.
The public is being asked to donate handmade items to women's and children's charities in Susan's name. Several craft shops in the area will distribute flyers with every purchase. "We try to come up with ideas to keep Susan's name in the news. We want to keep her picture and her name in the forefront of people's minds," Kiirsi Hellewell said.

Joshua Powell's sister doubts him on 'Dr. Phil'
Television » Jennifer Graves says she feels 'caught in the middle.'
By Melinda Rogers
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 02/13/2010 11:15:25 PM MST
The sister of Joshua Powell will offer criticism of her brother on Tuesday's episode of "Dr. Phil," according to a preview of the daytime talk show released Saturday.
Utahn Jennifer Graves will discuss the case of her missing sister-in-law, Susan Powell. Graves' brother, Joshua Powell, 34, is the only person of interest publicly named by West Valley City police in connection with Susan Powell's disappearance.
He has provided little information to police or family members -- a point of frustration for Graves. "I'm kind of caught in the middle. My brother is a person of interest, but my sister-in-law, my good friend is missing," said Graves, in the episode taped last week.
"What has bothered me the most [is that] he has been reluctant to participate in the media arena. That's our biggest tool in helping to find Susan. You are the husband! There is more that you can do! So get up and do it!"
Graves also said her brother avoids questions about his wife's disappearance.
"I asked him if he was involved and he wouldn't respond ... he literally doesn't say anything ... [he said] 'My lawyer said not to talk to anyone,'" his sister said during the show.
In addition to Graves, Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox; Shelby Gifford, a family friend who has served as a spokeswoman during the search for Susan; and Graves' husband Kirk will appear on the program to talk about the search.
Susan Powell, 28, was reported missing Dec. 7.
The program airs on KUTV Channel 2 at 3 p.m. and KJZZ Channel 14 at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Phil McGraw hosts the one-hour show, which is the second highest-rated daytime talk show in the nation, according to www.drphil.com.
In the preview, Chuck Cox is said to discuss how he tried to be supportive of his son-in-law, but has since cast doubt on Joshua Powell's story of camping past midnight in subfreezing temperatures.
"In the beginning I wanted to be supportive, I believed that there would be a reasonable explanation ... but as my son-in-law shut down [it became] really hard to keep positive," Cox said, according to the preview.
"It's frustrating, he won't cooperate with the police and that's impeding the investigation and it's stopping us from finding my daughter."
Police have said Joshua Powell told them he took their two sons, now ages 3 and 5, camping at 12:30 a.m. the day Susan disappeared, leaving his wife at the family's West Valley City home. Joshua Powell, has since moved to his hometown of Puyallup, Wash., with the boys. He recently returned to Utah to fix up his home to rent to neighbors.
Also appearing on Tuesday's "Dr. Phil" will be Ed Smart, father of kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart. Smart has offered support to Chuck and Judy Cox throughout the search. He said on "Dr. Phil" he was forced to endure intense police questioning about his daughter's disappearance, but he did as much as possible to cooperate.
"To us it was all about finding Elizabeth and it didn't matter what the police wanted, we wanted to do whatever it would take to find her because nothing was more important to us. That just doesn't seem to be the case with Josh," Smart said, according to the preview.

Parents to unveil foundation dedicated to Susan Powell
By Melinda Rogers
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 02/14/2010 09:12:13 PM MST
The parents of missing West Valley City mother Susan Cox Powell on Monday will unveil a new nonprofit organization founded in the 28-year-old woman's honor.
Chuck and Judy Cox, of Puyallup, Wash., along with other family members have created the Susan Cox Powell Foundation, according to a Sunday news release.
Details about the foundation were not immediately available Sunday evening. But the Cox family plans to discuss the foundation during a Monday news conference scheduled for 2 p.m at a Best Western Hotel in Puyallup.
Shelby Gifford, a spokesperson for Chuck and Judy Cox, said in the Sunday news release that in addition to the foundation, the family will "answer questions that have previously not been addressed" related to the case of Susan Cox Powell, who was reported missing Dec. 7. The release does not specify topics the family will discuss.
The Coxes press conference comes a day before the family will appear on the "Dr. Phil" show, where they will speak about frustrations with Joshua Powell, Susan's husband, according to a preview of the episode released to media Saturday.
The program airs on KUTV Channel 2 at 3 p.m. and KJZZ Channel 14 at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the preview, Joshua Powell's sister, Jennifer Graves, as well as Chuck Cox question why Joshua Powell has done little to aid in the search for his wife. Joshua Powell, 34, is the only person of interest publicly named by police in the case.

West Valley City police could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday evening about the press conference or the status of the investigation into Susan Cox Powell's disappearance. West Valley City police Capt. Family: Missing woman's husband controlled her
Story Updated: Feb 15, 2010 at 6:25 PM PST
SEATTLE -- Family members of the missing mom Susan Powell say they've learned the woman was a victim of domestic violence.
On Monday the woman's family, wearing purple ribbons in her honor, addressed the media. Family spokesperson Shelby Gifford said the missing woman's husband, Josh Powell, was extremely controlling of his wife.
"Those who spent the most time with Susan on a day-to-day basis report witnessing egregious acts of control on Josh's part," she said.
Gifford added Josh Powell exercised total control of the car, how much food his wife was allowed to buy the family as well as the management of the family's finances.
Susan Powell was last seen Dec. 6 by her husband at their home in West Valley, Utah. He told police he saw her just before he took their two young children on a midnight camping trip in snowy conditions. When they got back, he says she was gone.
Josh Powell is the only person of interest police have named in the case.
"I think he knows something that he's not telling us," said the missing woman's mother, Judy Cox.
"I'm not buying the story that he gave police," added the woman's father, Chuck Cox.
The missing woman's sister, Denise Gordon, said she recently had a dream about Susan Powell.
"She was sweeping yellow paper and I asked her in the dream, I said, 'Well, didn't anybody recognize you? And she said, 'Well, I was in a closet,'" she said. "That gives me hope that she's still around."
Susan Powell's family said since Josh Powell moved his sons to Puyallup, they have had very little contact with the boys. Josh Powell moved back to Puyallup after his wife disappeared and was said to be selling the couple's home in Utah.
"It's a difficult thing. It's very frustrating, because we want to know the grandchildren are OK. We want pt be able to talk with them and play with them," said Chuck Cox.
"They're having a hard time. They're really missing her," said Gordon of the Powells' boys.
In the wake of her disappearance, the "Friends & Family of Susan Powell Facebook page" was launched to aid in the search effort.
The page contains information about Susan Powell and her disappearance, and was a place where members of Facebook could come for up-to-date information about the case.
Meantime, Susan Powell's parents were scheduled to tape an appearance on "Dr. Phil" this week. Jennifer Powell, Susan's sister-in-law and Josh Powell's sister, was also scheduled to appear on the show, according to a press release.
"I don't want to give up hope," said Judy Cox.
The missing woman's family members have established The Susan Cox Powell Foundation, which aims to fuel the search by reminding people of Susan Powell's disappearance.
The foundation's mission also includes educating others, including kids in school to recognize early signs of domestic violence and how to report it, as well as a national database of information to help potential victims recognize signs of an abusive relationship.

Neighbors to Josh Powell: Your wife is still missing
By Lindsay Cohen
Story Updated: Feb 26, 2010 at 6:38 AM PST
PUYALLUP, Wash. -- There's a hint of purple on almost every light post in one Puyallup community.
Each serves as a message to the residents there, one in particular.
"I do not understand how he can pick up and move -- almost act as if nothing happened," said neighbor Colleen Russell.
Russell started the campaign to put purple ribbons and flyers throughout her private gated community, which she shares with Josh Powell.
Josh's wife, Susan Powell, went missing from their home near Salt Lake City, Utah, on December 6th -- the same night that Josh took their kids on a late-night camping trip, as temperatures dipped below freezing.
Despite efforts by family and police, Susan has not been found.
Police named Josh their only person of interest and have said that he is not cooperating with the investigation.
Josh left Salt Lake City and moved, along with the couple's two children, to his father's house in Puyallup. Both Josh and Susan are from the Pierce County city.
"If that were my husband... I would stay in that town," Russell said. "I would stay in that home until he came back or until a body was found."
Perplexed by Josh's move, Russell started a campaign to keep Susan's disappearance front and center in their Puyallup community. She has passed out flyers, talked to neighbors, and encouraged them to keep Susan's memory alive.
One of the flyers, along with a ribbon, sits on a light pole across the street from Josh's new home.
"I felt that people should know that she’s missing," said another neighbor, Rosalina Reyes, who is helping canvass the neighborhood. "Hopefully someone will see her and call 911."
Russel said she didn't know Susan Powell, but she was moved by the woman's story to act.
"We're going to be visible and... it's not right to move away and forget," Russell said. "I don't feel as a neighbor so much that there's a danger to me, but I do feel that he needs to still have it in the forefront [of his mind.]"
Josh Powell's family did not want to comment on the neighbors' campaign.
Anyone with information about Susan Powell is asked to the West Valley Police Department at (801) 840-4000.

I don't think that Josh Powell needs a reminder that his wife is missing. Unfortunately, he probably knows exactly where she is.

Web site: Josh Powell is 'loving father and husband'
SEATTLE -- A Web site claims to be the official source of information on missing Puyallup native Susan Powell and her family.
The site SusanPowell.org features a photograph of the missing woman, her husband, Josh Powell, and their two boys out in the snow, next to a campfire at night. "Susan, we love you and miss you!
It is not known who set up the site that claims to have "exclusive access and copyright to more photos, videos, and even continuing information about the beautiful woman we love so dearly."
According to a search of the WHOIS database, SusanPowell.org is registered to Domain by Proxy, Inc., a company that enables its clients to anonymously register for Web sites. The site was created in July 2006, according to the database.
The site offers a description of both Josh and Susan Powell, painting Josh Powell as "a loving father and husband" -- a stark contrast from the abusive and controlling image Susan Powell's friends and family members had portrayed of him.
"He (Josh Powell) likes to take his wife out to dinner or watch movies with her. He regularly does activities with his beautiful wife and with his entire family. Josh is totally committed to his wife and children, continually finding new and engaging activities to do with them," states the site. "He also loves photography, especially when the photos are of Susan and the boys."
Of Susan Powell, the site says the woman "has many hobbies and interests such as singing, gardening, and socializing with friends."
"She holds nothing back when socializing with friends. You could say she wears her heart on her sleeve," the site says.
Susan Powell was last seen Dec. 6 by her husband at their home in West Valley, Utah. He told police he saw her just before he took their two young children on a midnight camping trip in snowy conditions. When they got back, he said, she was gone. "I think he knows something that he's not telling us," said the missing woman's mother, Judy Cox.
"I'm not buying the story that he gave police," added the woman's father, Chuck Cox.

Josh Powell makes first public effort to find missing wife
Aaron Vaughn, Web Content Producer FOX 13 News

SALT LAKE CITY - In his own way of reaching out toward the public for the first time, Josh Powell, husband of the missing Utah mother, had his own site published online, dedicated to his missing wife and wellbeing of his children. Susan Powell dot org makes no mention of other search sites for Susan -- sites that have already garnered a vast nationwide following. The Facebook page currently has over 45,000 members.
Susan's friend, Kiirsi Hellewell says that when the search for Susan went online Josh told her he "owned" the SusanPowell.org domain. "We said, great, get it up," says Hellewell. That was nearly two months ago.
The site has new pictures of Susan and her family and references West Valley Police for potential tipsters who may know the whereabouts of Susan Cox Powell.
Susan Powell dot org says it is the official website for her. But her parents, the Cox family, say they do not sanction the site and do not want anyone to confuse it with the Facebook page or their website, Susan Cox Powell Foundation dot Org.
"Some of things Josh says on the website are very contradictory to what I know from Susan's own mouth," says Hellewell.
FOX 13's Arikka Von reports.

Tensions rise as 'missing mom' fliers torn down
By Shomari Stone
Story Updated: Feb 27, 2010 at 10:12 PM PST
PUYALLUP, Wash. - Tensions are rising in the search for missing Puyallup native Susan Powell, who disappeared after dark Dec. 6 under mysterious circumstances.
Volunteers are frustrated after the fliers they posted about Susan in her husband's neighborhood were torn down.
Now the president of the Country Hollow Homeowners' Association has made them take down the rest of the fliers, which are designed to raise awareness about Susan's disappearance.
"The regulations of the community do not allow any posting of signs on community property," he told the volunteers. "As the president of the association, I have to tell you."
Colleen Russell and her friends taped the signs to light poles and put up purple ribbons on trees in the gated community where they live.
"I don't think the homeowners' association understands that that was Susan's favorite color," Russell says. "We're not accusing anything - we just want to find Susan and bring her home."
Susan Powell's husband Josh moved to Country Hollow with their two sons from Salt Lake City, where she vanished. He is considered a person of interest in the case.
Investigators say Josh told them he took his kids camping in subfreezing temperatures around midnight on Dec. 6, and that his wife was missing when he returned the next day.
Susan and Josh are both from the Puyallup area and Susan's in-laws live there.
The volunteers feel defeated, and they wonder why Josh Powell isn't asking the homeowners' association to make an exception to the rule, since it is his wife and she's missing.
KOMO News tried to interview Josh Powell about it, but no one would answer the door at the house where he is staying. A man's voice inside said Josh was not available.
Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, is disappointed the fliers have to come down.
"I still have hope, and I can't deny it's been almost three months. And the likelihood now is if she is not being captive somewhere then she is no longer with us," he said.

Missing mom's husband shuns vigils in Utah, Puyallup
By Shomari Stone and KOMO News Services
Story Updated: Mar 7, 2010 at 11:09 AM PST
PUYALLUP, Wash. - Two vigils - almost 1,000 miles apart - were held for missing Susan Powell as friends and family gathered in Utah and Washington to commemorate three months since the 28-year-old mother of two disappeared.
But one person was conspicuous by his absence - the missing mom's husband, Josh Powell, who did not attend either of the vigils.
Susan Powell was last seen at her Salt Lake City area home on Dec. 7. Her husband told police he last saw his wife as he left with the couple's young sons on a midnight camping trip in the remote Utah desert in subfreezing temperatures.
He has been called the sole person of interest in the case, but has not been arrested.
Participants in the Utah vigil lit candles, sang songs and shared prayers that Susan Powell might soon be found. Kiirsi Hellewell, who was there, says she never expected the search for her friend would have stretched so long.
In Puyallup - where Susan Powell's parents live - the vigil was very somber, as most are.
But what made this one different, was that Susan's father played a phone message in the speakers so all could hear her voice.
In the recording, Susan can be heard teaching her young son how to sing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."
Susan's father, Chuck Cox, also played an old message from his daughter, allowing the crowd to hear her sweet voice at her candlelight vigil.
But Cox admits the months of waiting and waiting - with no visible progress - are taking their toll. He says he feels "tired, worn down."
"It's been a long three months," he says.
Susan's family and friends have spent the last three months, worrying and waiting for an answer. Just where is Susan? What's the latest with the investigation?
"Although I know the police are doing everything to find her, I don't have any idea on how the investigation is really going," Cox says. "We've said from the beginning that Susan is a shining example of somebody who showed love wherever she went."
Some people at the Puyallup vigil were surprised Josh Powell didn't show up. He now lives nearby in Puyallup with their two kids, moving there from Utah a few weeks ago.
"I think it's odd. I think he should be here," says Cox. "I wish he was. I wish he would come forward and talk to police."
KOMO News has tried several times to reach out to Josh Powell, but he refuses to comment.
There is still a $10,000 reward for information leading to Susan's return. Anyone with information is asked to call the West Valley Police Department in Utah at (801) 840-4000.

I can't say that I'm surprised Joshua skipped the vigils. Nothing about his story of that night makes sense and he doesn't act like someone who is concerned that his wife is missing.

Powell's story is total BS, I felt that from the beginning. You just don't pack up and move, act like nothing happened. It's hard to believe there isn't something, some clue, that links him to her disappearance.

Tigermom, it is sickening that Joshua seems to have gotten away with it. It's been so long that if they ever do find Susan's body, I fear that it will be another case of "homicide by undetermined means."

I want to know why he is allowed to "not cooperate" ?
Baby Gabrielle's mother refuses but she sits in a jail obviously enjoying the single life with no child to hold her back. How is it he is allowed to be free and keep those kids? Is there no way to get those children out of harm's way? I do not know how her father keeps his anger in check and I am sure he has not seen the boys since Susan went missing.

I think Susan's father has to tread lightly, for fear that he will be denied any access to his grandsons.
If this creep gets away with this, then it won't be the first, nor the last time that a wife/mother goes missing, the husband/dad makes up an unprovable alibi, and leaves the family's home, taking their kids and boldly goes on with his life.

The hours after Susan Powell's disappearance
March 9th, 2010 @ 11:35am
Story compiled with contributions from Andrew Adams and Shara Park.
WEST VALLEY CITY -- He has refused to speak with police detectives investigating the disappearance of his wife, but police have started retracing the footsteps of their only person of interest in the case.
KSL Newsradio has learned Josh Powell may have spent time at a strip club, just hours after Susan Powell was reported missing. But despite numerous eyewitness accounts, police are skeptical that the man was indeed Josh Powell.
Workers at the South Salt Lake strip club, Duces Wild, say a man they believe was Josh made sexually-explicit comments and advances, yelled, yanked away a customer's drink and ultimately didn't tip the workers when he visited the day after Susan was last seen.
Bartender Liz Burkholder, who later identified Powell in several photos from police, says the man tried to make advances toward her, take her picture -- a no-no in strip clubs -- and then was rude and vulgar when she declined.
"He wanted me to come over and bend down so he could see my boobs, kept telling me I had a nice [behind], telling me to come down there, he wouldn't hurt me, bend over," Burkholder said in an exclusive interview with KSL Newsradio. "At first it was advances, and then when I wouldn't go back down there it was just rude and vulgar… It was embarrassing because that's not normal -- even in a strip club. I stayed away from him as much as possible."
The alleged appearance at the club happened the afternoon of Dec. 7, when police were still looking for Susan, Josh and their two children. They had been reported missing that morning after a day care provider grew concerned because the children had not been dropped off on schedule. Josh showed up to his home with the kids between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. that evening.
The man strip club employees identified as Powell came in around 2 p.m. wearing a hat. He ordered two beers and a shot and left after about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Burkholder says customers moved away from him and actually applauded as he walked out the door.
His behavior was "outlandish," club owner Rydell Mitchell said.
"Yelling out loud, saying weird things," Mitchell described. "He yelled at one of my customers and said, ‘You don't know what it's like -- you don't have any idea what kind of day I've had.'"
Burkholder says Powell later grabbed a drink from another patron.
"Acting really peculiar like that -- it just made everybody really uncomfortable," Mitchell said.
Mitchell says he wasn't sure if the man identified as Powell was there for the drinks or the dancers, but he believes it was for both.
"He didn't sit on the stage or anything like that. I guess he wasn't tipping the girls, from what I do understand," Mitchell said. "Not sure if he was sitting over by the bar and maybe watching them -- trying to get a free show."
Burkholder says a customer later recognized Powell on the news and called West Valley police. She says investigators showed up several days after the ordeal.
"I wouldn't want the authorities finding out I was in a strip club the day after my wife came up missing," said former police officer and UtahDetective.com owner David Lundberg.
Lundberg says the alleged encounter raises suspicion, although the question remains how much this may add to the investigation.
"The circumstances as far as the lighting in a club like that, the sound, the noise, where he was moving around, how well people actually paid attention to him -- eyewitness evidence has been thrown out because it's not as positive as they'd like to see it," he said.
West Valley Police Captain Tom McLachlan says the tip was investigated and the statements of the eyewitnesses "were taken into account." Tuesday he said based on eyewitness accounts alone, they cannot confirm it was Josh.
"I'm not trying to discredit the individuals involved but sometimes, you know, eyewitness accounts can be mistaken, so you can't rely wholly on that," McLachlan said. "You try to verify, and at this point we are not able to verify though independent means that that was Josh."
Mitchell says surveillance cameras were not working in the club at the time.
"I don't have any idea why anybody would say something like that," Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, told KSL Monday. "We have no need to respond."
Powell has said he took the children camping near Simpson Springs and the Pony Express Trail in Tooele County beginning around 12:30 a.m. the morning of Dec. 7. His alleged appearance at Duces Wild would have been more than 13 hours after that time and roughly one to two hours before he returned home with the children.

Re: Susan Powell -- Missing 12/7/09
Somehow, I'm really not surprised...
The one question nagging me is where were the boys? did he leave them asleep in the car maybe?
At this time, all 4 were "missing"...
He has the typical reaction of a killer - he moved away from the area - maybe Susan was haunting him in their house, and I hope she was (and is) but for him to move away for any reason is ludacris - if any member of my family was legitimately missing (as Josh claims she is) I would NEVER leave that house until i brought that family member home - Consider how that person would feel if they showed up at their "home" one day to find another famiy there?? and he moves within weeks of her going missing??
My next call on this guy is that he won't be single for long (if anyone will have him) but considering that he visited this strip club just hrs after killing his wife, it's not that far fetched to assume that he might already be trying to secretly date someone else... shame on that woman whoever pays this guy any attention.
Back to this alleged sighting though - can the cops not get a warrant for Josh and Susan's cell records and ping his locations? maybe they can retrace his footsteps that night and the following day since he can't seem to remember where he was....

The police looked into it and don't seem to think it was him. Here is the article.
Police doubt story of Josh Powell at strip club
Employees say he was in bar on the day his wife disappeared

SOUTH SALT LAKE — West Valley police say they doubt a man seen at a strip club on the day Susan Cox Powell disappeared was her husband.
"We're aware (of the story). We investigated it. We talked to the people involved. We don't feel that was Josh (Powell)," said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan.
On Dec. 7, a man walked into Duces Wild, 2750 S. 300 West, and acted very belligerent.
"He was just being real loud and making a nuisance of himself," said club co-owner Kimberly Cooper. "He was saying things like, 'You don't know what kind of day I've had.' "
The man, who was wearing a beanie cap, was loud, tried to drink other patrons' drinks and, at one point, was questioned by other patrons about whether he was taking photographs inside the club with his cell phone, a violation of club rules,
"He stood out because he was being annoying to everybody," Cooper said. "Everyone applauded when he left."
When he wasn't walking around, the man sat at the bar by himself, mumbling, and then burst out yelling without warning, Cooper said.
"We call it bar Tourette's," she said.
Story continues below
The man yelled several times at a female bartender and made vulgar comments toward her. There were a handful of people in the bar at the time, Cooper said, most of them regular patrons. This man was not.
The man was in the club between 4 and 5 p.m., Cooper said. Other patrons from the club have told KSL Radio that the man was in the bar about 2 p.m.
Police say Josh Powell showed up at his West Valley house about 5 p.m. on that day, after he said he had gone camping in remote Tooele County with his two young boys. He said he had last seen his wife about 17 hours earlier.
Security cameras at the club were not working that day. No one noticed or can remember a van in the club parking lot, let alone one with two young children inside, Cooper said.
As a new state law requires, the club scans drivers' licenses of patrons as they enter. Cooper said the man who entered that afternoon would have had his license scanned. That data is stored in the machine for seven days, she said.
After Susan Powell's disappearance began to make headlines, one of the bartenders and at least two patrons remembered the belligerent man who was in the bar days earlier. Police were called and detectives went to the club and to the homes of some of those witnesses to interview them, Cooper said. They were too late to check the scanning device. But no one that day can remember checking an ID that said "Josh Powell," she said.
Cooper said there were at least three people who took close notice of the man. One was the bartender. She told the co-owner that she picked Josh Powell out of a photo lineup that police gave her at her house.
"She said, 'This was the guy who was in the bar making such an a-- of himself,' " Cooper said. "She said she positively ID'd him. She said she 'was sure' that was him."
One of the patrons, however, told Cooper that he was only mostly sure now that it was Powell but not 100 percent convinced. A third regular patron, she said, did not believe the man was Josh Powell, saying that this man's hair was longer than Josh Powell's.
Based on what she has heard from employees and patrons in her club, Cooper admitted Tuesday that she had her doubts, and with the beanie cap the man was wearing that day, it could have been a case of mistaken identity.
"I'm concerned maybe it wasn't him," she said. "There is a kid that comes in here once in a while that looks an awful lot like him."
Shelby Gifford, family spokeswoman for Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan Cox Powell's parents, had very little to say about the strip club story.
"Until something is substantiated, we're not going to comment on it," she said.
Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, also declined comment.

Susan Cox Powell was last seen early on Dec. 7. About 12:30 a.m., Josh Powell said he took his two young boys camping in a remote area of Tooele County. Temperatures that night were below freezing. Police were called later that afternoon when neither Powell showed up for work and their children were not dropped off at day care. When Josh Powell returned home, police were already at his house investigating.
Powell remains the sole person of interest in his wife's disappearance.

Search for Susan group wants volunteers to comb Utah desert for clues
9:37 AM MDT, March 16, 2010
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - A small group is seeking volunteers to comb the west desert where Josh Powell says he went camping the night his wife disappeared nearly four months ago. The group of friends out of Cache County says they have the skills to organize a search for Susan Cox Powell that they have tentatively set for April 10. Volunteers will need GPS, shortwave radios, proper gear and photo ID for check-in.
"We don't anticipate any problems but sometimes accidents happen," says organizer, Joanne Bentley. "We are going to ask all volunteers to sign a waiver form so they understand the risk involved."
Bentley says this is very early in the planning stages. More details are supposed to be announced in the next few days and on the Facebook page managed by Susan's friends and family. But she says it is complete strangers who are leading this search.
Susan Powell, a 29-year-old mother of two young boys, was last seen on Dec. 7, 2009 at her home in West Valley City. Her husband, Josh Powell, said Susan stayed home while he took his boys camping at midnight in subfreezing temperatures. Police say Josh Powell is the only person of interest in the case.
