Joran Van der Sloot may have killed Stephany Flores, says his mom

Joran van der Sloot's own mother thinks he may have killed Stephany Flores.

Anita Van der Sloot reportedly made the statement to a Dutch newspaper.

"Joran is sick in his head, but he didn't want any help," the Dutchman's mother is quoted by De Telegraaf, in which she also admits her son "could have done something" to Stephany Flores.

The young Peruvian woman was found dead in the poker player's hotel room in Lima on May 30. Van der Sloot was arrested several days later in Chile, after fleeing the country.

"I now believe that Joran may indeed have done something to Stephany in Peru," she is quoted as saying. "Maybe in a burst of anger? I don't know."

According to ABC News, Van der Sloot refuses to talk to media in the United States because of how her son has been portrayed since the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005. The 22-year-old has been the prime suspect in that case, which remains unsolved.

Anita reportedly told De Telegraaf that she and her husband, Paul Van der Sloot, had made a mistake not getting their son psychiatric help after the Holloway incident.

"After he was arrested for Natalee's disappearance, he was traumatized," she is quoted as saying in De Telegraaf. "We made a big mistake then. We sent him to the Netherlands to study. He should have gone to a closed clinic, he needed psychological help even back then."

Anita Van der Sloot also reportedly admited to talking with her son the day before he was captured in Chile.

"I said, 'Joran, you're being searched internationally. A girl is dead. Where are you?'" she said, according to the newspaper. "He sounded frightened. 'A girl dead?' Then he fell silent for a moment."

Then, she reportedly said, he added: "'It's not Stephany, is it? No, not Stephany!'"

"I told him he had to turn himself in," Anita Van der Sloot said, according to De Telegraaf. "If only he had listened to his mother."

If, indeed, Joran Van der Sloot is guilty of murdering the 21-year-old Peruvian woman, then his mother may not want anything more to do with her son.

"If he killed Stephany, then he will have to carry the burden of that," she reportedly said. "I will not visit him in his cell, I cannot embrace him. But he should get a fair trial. He is psychologically disturbed. That has to count for something, right?"

AMSTERDAM -- Joran van der Sloot, the main suspect in the killing of a young woman in Peru last month and in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway, has mental problems, his mother has told a Dutch newspaper in an interview.

"My son is sick in his head," De Telegraaf quotes Anita van der Sloot as saying.

She says he traveled to Peru to avoid being committed to a mental institution in Aruba, where the family lives.

De Telegraaf's interview published Sunday is Anita van der Sloot's first public comment since her 22-year-old son was arrested on suspicion of killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

Police in Peru say Joran van der Sloot has confessed to the killing. He is due to be interviewed by a judge in Lima next week.

AMSTERDAM – A Dutch newspaper that interviewed

Joran van der Sloot in his prison cell in Lima, Peru, said Monday he has retracted his confession to the killing of a young woman there.

De Telegraaf said the 22-year-old Dutchman claims he only signed papers admitting killing Stephany Flores because he was intimidated by police and had been promised he would be transferred to the Netherlands if he confessed.

"I was very scared and confused during the interrogations and wanted to get away," the paper quoted him as saying. "In my blind panic, I signed everything, but didn't even know what it said."

Van der Sloot is the main suspect in Flores' May 30 killing in a Lima hotel, exactly 5 years after the still unsolved disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway on Aruba. He met both women in casinos, and both were last seen alive in his company.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia has said Van der Sloot will have to be tried in Flores' death before any extradition request can be considered. In addition to possible involvement in Holloway's disappearance, for which Van der Sloot has not been charged, he is wanted by the FBI on suspicion of attempting to extort money from the Holloway family.

If convicted of killing Flores, he faces from 15 to 35 years in prison in Peru.

Prosecutors allege Van der Sloot killed Flores in his hotel room, where her body was found, with "ferocity and great cruelty." According to a transcript of the confession, he elbowed the young woman in the nose, strangled her with both hands, threw her to the floor, took off his bloodied shirt and asphyxiated her.

The newspaper said he now says that's not true.

"I was tricked," the paper quoted Van der Sloot as saying of Flores' killing. "I'll explain later how it all happened."

He is scheduled to be interviewed by a judge in

Lima this week.

Instead, reports CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor, the 22-year-old Dutchman refused to discuss the case and recanted his original confession.

Van der Sloot is also the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance in Aruba of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway.

The Peruvian judge went to the infamous Miguel Castro Castro Prison to interrogate van der Sloot about the death of Flores, a 21-year-old business student, in his Lima hotel room May 30.

Yes, that's right, RadarOnline.com has learned that van der Sloot, the 22-year-old Dutchman who admitted to Peruvian authorities that he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez on May 30, told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on Tuesday that's he's been receiving many marriage proposals while in prison.

"One of them even wants me to get her pregnant," van der Sloot told the paper.

While sounding bizarre, the phenomenon has actually occurred before in the case of other convicted killers including Scott Peterson, "The Nightstalker" Richard Ramirez and Polly Klass killer Richard Allen Davis.

NEW YORK (CBS) Crime scene photos obtained by 48 Hours | Mystery and published exclusively by Crimesider show the crime scene in the Lima, Peru hotel room where Stephany Flores was murdered.

The crime photos shows the 21-year-old's body lying on the floor next to the bed with her arms extended and legs against the wall.

Police say Joran van der Sloot confessed to killing Flores in the hotel room after the two met playing poker at a casino.

Video from hotel security cameras shows Flores and van der Sloot entering his room together at 5 a.m. Sunday and then shows van der Sloot leaving alone four hours later with his bags. Police say van der Sloot also left the hotel briefly at 8:10 a.m. and returned with two cups of coffee and bread purchased across the street at a supermarket. Coffee cups are visible in some of the crime scene photos.

Flores' murder occurred on May 30, exactly five years after American teenager Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba. Van der Sloot has long been considered the prime suspect in Holloway's disappearance by authorities on the Dutch Caribbean island.

The crime scene photos were obtained by "48 Hours | Mystery" from sources close to the investigation.

Joran van der Sloot says he's being jailed in Peru in violation of his rights.

A judge is expected to decide Wednesday on the legality of Joran van der Sloot's incarceration, his lawyer said.

If the ruling is unfavorable to the murder suspect, attorney Maximo Altez said he is prepared to appeal to the highest court.

Peruvian authorities have charged van der Sloot with murder in the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. He also is the lead suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

Lima, Peru (CNN) -- Peruvian police said Thursday they found skin underneath the fingernails of a 21-year-old student Joran van der Sloot is accused of killing.

Miguel Canlla Ore, a colonel in the Peruvian National Police and head of homicide, told journalist Victoria Macchi that the amount of skin was small and that laboratory DNA tests that might indicate who it came from had not been completed.

Peruvian authorities have charged the 22-year-old Dutchman with murder in the death of Stephany Flores, whose body was found June 2 in a hotel room registered to van der Sloot.

He also is the lead suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

Van der Sloot was arrested twice in connection with Holloway's disappearance but was never charged because of a lack of evidence.

Superior Court Judge Wilder Casique rejected the habeus corpus motion on behalf of Van der Sloot, who is jailed pending trial on charges of first-degree murder and robbery in the May 30 death in his hotel room of Stephany Flores, whom he met playing poker in a casino.

Van der Sloot also remains the sole suspect in the unresolved 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

I'm glad that Joran is finding out he's not in Aruba anymore. The Peruvians aren't going to fall for him constantly changing his story.

Yay for the judge!

As we have been told that confessions usually make for a lighter sentence.. I am hoping that the prosecution can bring in (at sentencing) that this monster recanted his confession so that they can have that information when sentencing.. It wud be so sickening, that in the end, he got off lighter because he admitted to killing her (as he alreadyknew that his blood soaked clothing had been admitted in to evidence, and was likley advised he will be sentenced more lightly if he confesses)/.... This wud show any judge/jury, what a self serving monster he is, to have admitted this only for self serving reasopns, and where he blamed the victim for his actions......

I didn't think the Peruvians would let this pig fly or call his own shots. Aruba authorities should just sink slowly into the sea for allowing this murderer to go free.

With three judges and no jury, I'm inclined he will be sentenced to the max. And it will be done swiftly, no silly motions to stave off prison. They have the proof, and they are not letting him go.

Joran van der Sloot indicted on fraud, extortion charges

Joran van der Sloot has been indicted in connection with allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from the mother of Natalee Holloway, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance said.

A federal grand jury in Alabama indicted van der Sloot Wednesday on charges of wire fraud and extortion. Van der Sloot was questioned in Holloway's death but never charged. He is also being held in Peru on murder charges in the death of college student Stephany Flores.

What good does it do them to indict him at this time? Peru has him and they are going to keep him for a long, long, long time.

NEW YORK (CBS) Joran van der Sloot is reportedly hoping to tell his side of the story on-camera...for $1 million.

Sources within the Peruvian prison where the Dutch national is awaiting trial for the May 30 murder of Stephany Flores, told ABC News that van der Sloot is reportedly trying to cash in on his notoriety. They claim that he says he will sit down for a television interview with anyone willing to pay him $1 million.

Police say van der Sloot gave a full confession of the crime; since then he has unsuccessfully attempted to have the confession thrown out.

These reports come just a day after van der Sloot was indicted in the U.S. on charges he tried to extort $250,000 from Beth Holloway, the mother of Natalee Holloway. He remains the sole suspect in the unresolved 2005 disappearance of the Alabama teen on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

If convicted in the murder of Flores, van der Sloot faces between 15 and 35 years in prison.

Van der Sloot files suit against initial lawyer

LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot has sued the lawyer who represented him during a police interrogation on the day that authorities say the Dutchman confessed to killing a Peruvian woman, his current attorney said Saturday.

Maximo Altez told The Associated Press he filed suit Friday charging attorney Luz Romero Chinchay with misrepresentation, abuse of authority and conspiracy to commit a crime. Altez said the initial lawyer "pretended to be a public advocate when he is actually a private attorney."

"We have searched the name of Luz Romero Chinchay in the list of public defenders provided by the Ministry of Justice and his name was not on that list. We do not know why the police called this lawyer. We want to know who paid for him because my client did not," Altez said.

Under Peruvian law, a crime suspect who does not have private counsel is provided with a public defender who works for the Ministry of Justice.

Altez said he also has filed suit charging the same offenses against Col. Miguel Canlla, chief of the police homicide squad, who led the interrogation of Van der Sloot.

Neither Romero Chinchay nor Canlla could be reached for comment.

Everyone’s favorite misunderstood murderer has (thankfully) found a way to inform us, from the depths of his squalid Peruvian prisonhole, that he is the innocent victim of an international plot to frame him for the slaying of Stephany Flores-Ramirez.

Wait for it…

According to the maniacal manslut, law enforcement agencies from various countries banded together to form what he calls the “Axis of F**kery” hellbent on destroying him. “Their evil knows no limits,” said Van der Slut, sporting his classic “caveman in the middle of a silent but deadly fart” expression, as he detailed the FBI’s intricate, diabolical plot. According to the wind-breaking Neanderthal, the nefarious agency went to great lengths to lure him all the way around the globe. “They layed a long trail of 25K $1 bills (and some free GHB), from The Netherlands to Peru; it was a really dirty trick they played on me,” whined the freshly orange-haired, black-hearted excreta. “Not only did they line the path to Lima with American dollars soaked in Beth Holloway-Twitty’s tears, but they also threw in my favorite first date candy. They knew I couldn’t resist that. What else was I supposed to do? This was clearly entrapment.”

The mysogynistic playboy went on to claim that in PHASE 2 of the sinister operation, the FBI orchestrated the high stakes poker tournament at the end of the money trail in Lima, essentially strapping the known gambler to a poker table right next to the unfortunate Stephany Flores-Ramirez. Needless to say, this bombshell contradicts the “confession” given by the Dutch(oven)man when he was first arrested for the crime, after a bad bleach job and a scenic cab ride through Chile. As it turns out, however, Joran really only signed that pesky sworn confession after being threatened with physical violence by police. It is unknown, however, if these threats were made before or after they promised him his signature would actually extradite him to Aruba, as he reported yesterday.
