Notes from Peru: Stephany Flores won $237 the night she was killed
July 6, 2010
Posted: 05:39 PM ET
Lima, Peru – Stephany Flores Ramirez went directly to the poker table where Joran van der Sloot was sitting, according to an Atlantic City Casino spokesman.
Luis Laos told In Session the 21-year-old woman entered the casino by herself around 3:00 a.m., approximately two hours after van der Sloot. Laos was able to trace Flores' path to the table by looking at a sequence of videos from several closed circuit cameras.
Peruvian police believe van der Sloot murdered Flores later that morning.
Neither Flores nor van der Sloot were registered for an international poker tournament scheduled to start on June 2.
Laos, the assistant general manager at the casino, said people who wanted to play in the tournament could enter by playing at the table or online. He said the entry fee was $2,700.
According to Laos, 700 to 800 people were registered for the tournament, which had a registration deadline of May 30.
Laos confirmed reports that Flores "won very little money" at the poker table on May 29. He said she won only 670 sols, about $237.
Laos said van der Sloot did not win any money that night.
Just days earlier, on May 25, Laos said Flores won $10,000. But he said, it was not at the poker table. The spokesman recalled Flores was with a "male friend" he would not identify in an area where there are only baccarat tables.
Laos said the "male friend" was not van der Sloot. Based on Laos' review of eight to 10 surveillance cameras, he said van der Sloot was not present when Flores won the $10,000. Van der Sloot had been seen in the casino about a week before Flores' death.
Laos said it is common for people to know who the big winners are, and that van der Sloot could have known that Flores had money.
"People talk. Someone who saw her win could have told him. She could have told him," he said.

I totally agree with you Piper. But even if he didn't know about the $10,000, from a few nights ago, he certainly knew that the $237 was $237 more than he had won. I think he had gotten so desperate for money, even that money looked good.
But, with JVDS, does he even have to have a reason?

Van der Sloot's mom won't visit him
July 8, 2010
Last Update: 7:46 am
Birmingham, Al (WIAT) The grieving mothers of Stephany Flores and Natalee Holloway can't visit their daughters. The mother of the man accused in Flores murder and Holloway's disappearance says she'll pass on the chance to visit her Joran in prison.
Anita van der Sloot told the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf she has no plans to visit her son in Lima's notorious Castro Castro prison where he is fighting charges he murdered 21 year old Peruvian student Stephany Flores. Flores was killed five years after Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway disappeared on a graduation trip to Aruba. The common link....Joran van der Sloot was the last person each girl was seen with.
After Joran left for Peru, Anita van der Sloot found a note from her son that said, “I’m gone, do not worry.” The next time she saw him, he was on TV in handcuffs.
She still maintains his innocence in the disappearance and presumed death of Natalee Holloway, but admits that, “Stephany, he may have killed.”
Anita van der Sloot said Joran is sick, but did not want mental help.
Van der Sloot is reportedly getting another psychological evaluation by Peruvian officials this week.

Atleast we have one mom who sees her son as a possible killer. Too bad CA can't see her daughter for what she really is.

Mama...I think CA knows deep in her heart but doesn't want to admit it publicly as that would show that she was wrong...As far as Joran's mother goes I think she is right in not visiting him...It is her idea and she is probably disgusted with his behavior...He has squandered a fortune and insulted the family name...He knows what he has done and thinks he is sly and will get away with everything...Little does he know that the straw has broken the camels back...I really think he is scared...

Van der Sloot's Confession: Is it Admissible in Court?
Van der Sloot claims that his confession was coerced
Published on July 8, 2010
by Cheryl Paradis, Psy.D.
I was not surprised to learn that Joran Van der Sloot retracted his confession a few days after his arrest for the murder of Stephanie Flores. The transcripts include details about how and why he strangled and suffocated her in his hotel room. “There was blood everywhere,” he is reported to have said. “What am I going to do now? I had blood on my shirt. There was also blood on the bed, so, I took my shirt and put it on her face, pressing hard, until I killed Stephany.”
There is so much evidence of Van der Sloot’s guilt that I expect he will use a psychiatric defense at trial. He certainly fits the criteria for antisocial personality disorder. I discussed this issue in my blog post, “Is Van der Sloot a Psychopath?” http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-measure-madness/201006/is-van-der-sloot-psychopath-0
Van der Sloot has not exactly recanted his statements. He has, however, claimed that he confessed under duress and was not provided with proper legal representation. In a jail interview he told De Telegraaf that he was promised he would be transferred to the Netherlands if he cooperated with the police. “In my blind panic I signed everything, but never knew what was written on them,” he said. “I was framed.”
Would Van der Sloot’s confession be ruled admissible in court? So much rides on the confession. Jurors are powerfully swayed by a defendant’s statement. They typically believe it to be genuine. The layperson is convinced that no one would confess to a crime they did not commit. Research has proven, however, that this bit of common sense is flawed. Confessions given by a mentally ill or mentally retarded suspect are of special concern, which is what makes a psychological forensic assessment so important.

Joran Van Der Sloot Trying To Use Legal Loophole To Get Out Of Jail
Posted on Jul 09, 2010 @ 10:00AM
Lawyers for suspected killer Joran van der Sloot are trying to take advantage of a Peruvian legal loophole to get him sprung out of jail, RadarOnline.com can reveal.
Although the 22-year-old Dutch national confessed to killing Stephany Flores Ramirez, 21, they are requesting that he be released from prison while he fights the charges.
His defense has appealed the arrest warrant that the Peruvian justice issued to jail van der Sloot at the maximum security prison Miguel Castro Castro, where he is being housed.
In Peru, all lawyers make this appeal for their defendants, trying to obtain what Peruvian law calls mandato de comparecencia, meaning defendants are set free, but need to stay in Lima and attend court every week or house arrest.
Van der Sloot's appeal will be evaluated by the court in the next few days, although Peruvian legal experts believe that it is likely that it will be denied.
While van der sloot confessed to murdering Flores Ramirez, he later recanted, and has not publicly commented on the charges. He remains a suspect in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba back in May of 2005, although he has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
He has been receiving regular visits from a mystery female at the notorious Miguel Castro Castro prison, and RadarOnline.com can also reveal that he has been inundated with romantic proposals from other women too.
Van der Sloot was slated to undergo more psychological testing in the prison this week.
According to Peru.com, a team of experts were to visit the accused killer Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the criminal proceedings unfolding against the Dutchman. Van der Sloot's Peruvian attorney said that the defense will submit their own psychological profiles on him, dating back to his childhood.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, a forensic psychologist who examined van der Sloot late last month concluded the accused killer is sane, but "devalues the female figure."
Van der Sloot is accused of killing student Stephany Flores Ramirez May 30, 2010 in a blood splattered Peru Hotel room after she allegedly looked at his computer, and saw emails related to the Holloway disappearance.

If he gets out on that legal loophole, they won't ever see him again.... at least, not until AFTER he murders ANOTHER young girl. Hopefully, they will consider him a flight risk, and NOT let him out.

Van der Sloot Update: Where is Stephany Flores' Missing $11,000?
NEW YORK (CBS) Police sources in Peru have disclosed to CBS News that Stephany Flores, Joran van der Sloot's alleged Peruvian murder victim, had won approximately $10,000 at casinos in the week leading up to her death and also had been given $1,000 from her father to purchase a laptop that she never got a chance to buy.
PICTURES: Van der Sloot Hotel Room Crime Scene
But police sources say that this money has never been found.
Flores reportedly kept her money in the glove compartment of her car. Police documents dated June 3 obtained by CBS News show the results of the search of Stephany Flores' car: no money was found in it.
Did Joran van der Sloot take that money?
The sources say that this was the true motive for the brutal murder of Flores: van der Sloot was after her money. Police say this means that van der Sloot's alleged murder of Flores was premeditated.
But in van der Sloot's confession - which he subsequently recanted in a Dutch newspaper - police say he told them that he became enraged after Flores found information on his laptop about his links to the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway.
According to Peruvian newspaper La Republica, van der Sloot told police, "I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life. She had no right. I went to her and I hit her. She was scared. We argued and she tried to escape. I grabbed her by the neck and I hit her."
Crimesider spoke with ex-FBI agent Paul Lindsay, who worked for many years investigating serial killers. Lindsay believes that if reports of van der Sloot's confession are accurate, van der Sloot created the story of the e-mail and the confrontation as a way to justify his actions.
Police say he smashed in the face of Flores, the student he met playing poker before leading her back to his hotel room. According to police, van der Sloot then strangled her, threw her to the floor and emptied her wallet.
Stephany Flores' death occurred exactly five years after Alabama teen Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba, a case which van der Sloot is the main suspect. The Dutchman faces charges of first-degree murder and robbery for the May 30 death of Stephany Flores.
Explicit crime scene photos were previously obtained exclusively by 48 Hours | Mystery from sources close to the investigation and published exclusively by Crimesider. They show a severely beaten Flores, her body badly bruised, her clothes stained with blood.

What they're saying about van der Sloot in Peru
July 24, 2010
Birmingham, Al (WIAT) Here in Alabama we think of Joran van der Sloot in terms of Natalee Holloway. He's the prime suspect in the disappearance of the Mountain Brook teen on a graduation trip to Aruba five years ago.
In Peru the Holloway connection is context...the main focus of attention is the murder...five years to the day after Natalee's disappearance...of Stephany Flores. The 21 year old student apparently met van der Sloot at a casino during a session of the Latin American Poker Tour. Security cameras later showed them entering his Lima hotel room where her murdered body was later found.
So in Peru it's a lurid local murder case, albeit with international overtones ranging from Peru to Aruba to Alabama to the Netherlands and even Thailand.
But the questions being asked everywhere are pretty much the same. Did he do it? Is he some sort of serial killer? Is he nuts? Will an insanity defense hold up in a Peruvian court?
Van der Sloot has confessed to the murder but is trying to get that confession thrown out on a variety of grounds ranging from improper legal representation to coercion. That appeal has been rejected. So the focus in Peruvian coverage has been on defense strategy. After a court ordered examination the defense team is left arguing that their client is more mentally ill than the court appointed doctors think he is.
Here's a sampling for Peruvian media websites:
From Peru21
"He was lucid and oriented to time and space. He knew what was going to do and calculated everything. He was never unconscious of reality and could not claim it was because of violent emotion, "said the forensic psychiatrist Silvia Rojas.
The Lima daily El Comercio also focused on the problems the court ordered exam is causing the defense team, quoting the local television program Prensa Libre. "According to doctors consulted by "Prensa Libre", Joran van der Sloot did not lose consciousness at the time he committed the crime. In that sense you can not claim that he fell into an extreme emotion."
And the English language website Living in Peru strikes the same theme: The latest public declarations of his Peruvian lawyer, Máximo Altez, stress that van der Sloot is “a sick person.”
During an interview for a local TV news program, Altez emphasized that “any psychiatric assessment performed on him, either here or in any other country, will indicate that Joran is a sick person.”

So, because he is a sick person, he can go around killing pretty young women and get away with it? Did he have a problem with his mother? Isn't that what they always ask?
If so, he should have just killed him mother, and these young women would still be alive today. This is ridiculous.

Van der Sloot movie being shot while he's arrested in Peru

Birmingham, Al (WIAT) Sometimes life…and death… imitate art. And sometimes art imitates life and death. Whether a film being made about Joran van der Sloot is truly art no one knows yet. But the very existence of the movie shows truth is stranger than fiction.
When Joran van der Sloot catapulted back into the news with his arrest in Peru for the murder of 21 year old student Stephany Flores, a Dutch filmmaker was shooting a movie about van der Sloot and the Natalee Holloway case in Aruba.
According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the film Me & Mr. Jones is being made by Dutch film maker Paul Ruven. It tells the fictional story of an undercover journalist trying to solve the Natalee Holloway case.

Van der Sloot Given 3 Months to Live after Contracting Malaria; Granted Humanitarian Release to Scotland!
Tuesday, 3 August 2010
In a shocking report just released today by the European Union Council of Ministers regarding the Human Rights and Health and Safety of Incarcerated Felons, Joran van der Sloot has been granted a humanitarian release by the Peruvian government when it was determined he has 'less than 3 months to live!"
The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.

Peruvian President wants death penalty for van der Sloot
Last Update: 8/17 11:40 am
Birmingham, Al (WIAT) Will Joran van der Sloot face the death penalty if convicted of murdering Stephany Flores? Will the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway pay the price for a crime in another country?
According to Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW), President Alan García of Peru has said he wants to reintroduce the death penalty in his country. If the president has his way, Dutch murder suspect Joran van der Sloot could face execution. Legal obstacles, however, make it unlikely that Peru brings back the death penalty anytime soon.
Mr García was referring to child molesters and killers, saying that "certain crimes must be paid for with the criminal's life". The president argued that if Peru executed a hundred criminals a year, that would be proportionally the same as in China, "where 5,000 rapists, thieves and corrupt mayors were shot last year". "I would gladly decapitate 50 child rapists," Mr García told reporters. A recent poll showed that 80 percent of Peruvians favoured a return of the death penalty.

Reaction to possible van der Sloot death penalty
Last Update: 8/18 11:34 pm
Birmingham, Al (WIAT) Stories that the President of Peru is seeking a reinstatement of the death penalty for murderers has stirred comment worldwide about the possible impact on Joran van der Sloot.
Van der Sloot is the Dutch national accused of the murder of 21 year old Peruvian student Stephany Flores. She was found dead in van der Sloot’s Lima hotel room. The Dutchman is currently in Peru’s Castro Castro prison. There is currently no death penalty or life imprisonment under current Peruvian law. The maximum van der Sloot would face if convicted is 35 years.

Even if they don't reinstate the DP, I'm not opposed to him getting 35 years...as long as they put him in general population...If he survives the entire 35 years and is released, someone will be waiting for him to do him in...

I agree, Estee..... he will never make it in general population, especially in a Peruvian prison.
But honestly, I would like to see him get the death penalty. If anyone ever deserved it, HE does.

(CNN) -- Authorities in Peru said Tuesday they have begun disciplinary action against jailers who photographed suspected killer Joran van der Sloot posing with two other men held in connection with high-profile killings there.

Joran Van De Sloot Body Language With Serene Smile Shows Peru Prison Life Is Not Bad As His Legal Process is Stalled Indefinitely Due To The “ No Translator Excuse”
August 29, 2010
~Snipped~
JORAN MAY BE RELAXED BECAUSE HIS LEGAL PROCESS IS ON HOLD INDEFINITELY
IF NOT PERMANENTLY
Joran’s body language n the photo also shows that he seems to be relaxed as though he doesn’t have a care in the world.
It is understandable as to why he may be feeling that way. Apparently there us a new snafu and the legal process against him, It has ground to a halt because no official interpreter can be found. The Peruvian television station showed a letter from the Peruvian association of translators and interpreters which said it has no one who can translate from Spanish into Dutch.
The Dutch embassy has also produced a letter in which it says it has no official interpreter available. Even though the Dutch Embassy says it provides a list of lawyers and interpreters to a national abroad facing criminal charges, it does not provide the interpreters themselves.
So Joran will not be tried and sentenced until an interpreter will be found which may be- NEVER !!!!!. This way Joran will be locked up but he will be safe as he remains in protective custody indefinitely or perhaps until his life ends.
I don’t see what they don’t get a translator who can translate Spanish to English and then get someone who can translate English to Dutch. But perhaps it is a ploy by the Dutch Embassy to further protect Joran, just like they clearly did when he was in Aruba.
To me this screams of manipulation. Joran was obviously well versed enough in English to communicate with Natalie Holloway. He is fluent enough in English to do articulate interviews with Greta van Sustern .
He was well versed enough in Spanish to communicate with Stefany Flores. And well he was versed enough to get two taxi drivers to help him escape.
It seems that he may very well be protected by the Dutch Embassy. They know for certain that if their citizen goes to trial in Peru, he will most likely be sent to a worse prison and into the general population where he will be raped and murdered within a matter of minutes.
So the best they can do for Joran and for the memory of his well connected father, Paulus Van der Sloot is to keep him in a situation where he will remain in a “less worse “ prison and be safe from harm by remaining in protective custody forever.

Joran Van Der Sloot Treated Well In Castro Castro Prison With A Pats On The Back and Walking Freely Behind Guards

JORAN GIVING INTERVIEWS FOR MONEY FOR JAILHOUSE PROTECTION?
Journalist John van den Heuvel of De Telegraaf, the Dutch newspaper came into Casto Castro Prison in Peru to videotape Joran van der Sloot for an interview. I have no doubt that the newspaper paid him to do the interview.
The reason I say this is because greedy Joran has made it clear that he will not speak to reporters unless there is money on the table. Joran definitely needs money to keep him alive in Castro Castro. He needs money to buy food from the outside.
In looking at the above photo of Joran he looks very well fed. He looks well kept with his manicured beard.
The money also allows him to buy anything else he wants, including the protection of the guards. Maybe that is why they allow him to do any interviews and roam around freely without any restraints.
THE REAL NEWS AS IT PERTAINS TO JORAN
While the de Telegraaf story tells of Joran’s confessing that he extorted money from Natalie Holloway’s family, that is old news. The FBI knew about it and we knew about it. But what IS new news and what is the REAL story of the day is what is going on in Castro Castro in relation to Joran.
It seems that Joran has worked both his charm as a sociopath and his money to receive the goodwill of the guards. You will see how well the guards are treating him in these screen shots taken from a video clip from the deTelegaaf interview taken before he entered the room to speak to the Dutch reporter.

Van Der Sloot Appeal Drags On
Last Update: 9/11 1:42 pm
Birmingham, Al (WIAT) While Joran van der Sloot sits in his cell at Lima's Castro Castro prison he's probably revelling in the attention he gained with an interview aired on Dutch TV Monday night. But he's also waiting an answer on a far more important question: his bid to get a murder confession tossed out of court because of alleged improprieties.
Under Peruvian law, it takes three appellate judges to sustain or deny an appeal. The initial three judge panel split 2-1 in favor of denying the appeal, so a fourth judge was appointed. But even that decision may not end the drama. If the fourth judge sides with van der Sloot, a fifth judge will be appointed to review the same evidence and provide the necessary third vote.

How crazy!..think of all the money that is being wasted to support this nonsense.. He had the bloody clothes, he fled, he confessed..what more do they need? Too bad for anything that was done in/with the system.. It is irrelevant. He took a life that he admitted too.. and took the bloody trial with him... He doesnt desreve to take up any money that cud be used for muuch better things, like starving children in that country...
I also disagree with the profiler whbo claims that monster looks comfortable..
If you look at the picture he is standing away from the grop and looks very uncomfortable.. His grin looks evil and coniving where he looks as though he is doing this pic to benefit somehow.. i dont see it as something he felt like doing for the heck of it.
His eyes look evil and he looks distraught ... I hope for The Flores sake that he is dealt with quickly for good, once and for all. I dont know if he will have to answer for killing Natalee, but I suspect the Holloways, must take some comfort in knowing this monster is behind bars.. at least for now... I doub t there will ever be any kind of closure for them... God Bless all the victims, of this slimey monster..

LIMA, Peru (CBS) Joran van der Sloot hasn't exactly had a low profile since he was thrown in prison in Peru and charged with killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his hotel room - what with reports of love letters from female admirers, stories about his Columbian hitman-roommate, and visits from the mother of his other suspected victim, Natalee Holloway.
Now new footage from inside the prison allegedly shows the young Dutchman trying to buy marijuana from another inmate.
The grainy footage purportedly shows a shirtless van der Sloot standing outside his cell when another inmate walks up to him and calls him "gringo van der Sloot," and asks if he wants to buy some marijuana, according to CNN, which says the footage comes from its Peru affiliate, America TV.
The unidentified man then asks if van der Sloot is "buying."
According to the video van der Sloot answers, "Can you sell it to me for five soles[$1.80]?"
Van der Sloot's attorney, Maximo Altez, says the whole thing was "staged" and he has asked Peru's National Correctional Institute to start an investigation into how the tape was made and how it was leaked, according to the cable news channel.
Altez told CNN that his client had been granted permission to paint his cell and that was why his shirt is off in the video: "He took off his shirt so that he wouldn't paint his clothes. He is painting and the guards are talking to him."
A spokesman for Lima's Castro Castro prison, Bruno Guzman, said that the matter was under investigation. "You can see an inmate offering him marijuana," Guzman said. He confirmed that van der Sloot was painting his cell at the time, saying "he wanted to improve his conditions," according to CNN.
Van der Sloot is considered the only suspect, but has not been charged, in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama high school senior Natalee Holloway while on vacation in Aruba.
Meanwhile the investigation into Stephany Flores's death continues, and van der Sloot is waiting for a decision on his appeal to have his confession to police thrown out, on the grounds that his rights were violated.

Re: Stephany Flores -- Found Deceased 5/30/10 UPDATE: Joran van der Sloot Confesses!!
Are the inmates running van der Sloot's prison?

The latest episode is video airing on Peruvian TV that appears to show van der sloot being offered marijuana by prison guards while he paints his cell a more cheerful yellow. Drugs and décor apparently make life behind bars a bit more bearable.
This is on the heels of an alleged escape attempt after van der Sloot panicked when he thought another inmate was delivering a poisoned meal to his cell.
Which was right after Beth Holloway somehow got into his cell in the company of a Dutch TV crew and confronted van der Sloot about the fate her daughter Natalee, a Mountain Brook High School graduate who disappeared five years ago on a graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen with van der Sloot who is still the prime suspect in her disappearance.

Want to know what it's like to spend a day in Joran van der Sloot's jailhouse slippers? He hangs his clothes on a rack and reads the Bible! He even sleeps on a mattress! CNN got an exclusive tour.
Van der Sloot—suspect in the murder of Natalee Holloway and another woman in Peru—is currently sitting in the Castro Castro prison, where In Session/CNN sent a reporter, Jean Casarez, for an exclusive inside look at his cell. The toilet is pretty disgusting, and it's a small space, but at least he's not in general population. Here is the video, where, besides being totally surprised there are actual prisoners inside a prison, Casarez says from inside van der Sloot's cell, "Here are his pants, and over here, here's his bed. It's a mattress."

For some reason, I don't think his temporary insanity plea will fly. I certainly hope not!! He will only have to serve 3 to 5 years if that's the case.........that is so very wrong.
