Billie Dunn's Attorney Speaks Out

MIDLAND - The lawyer for Billie Dunn is speaking out. He's only been on the job for a few days, but he has plenty to say about the situation facing the mother of missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn.

Dunn has hired an attorney out of Sweetwater named John Young and he tells NewsWest 9 he is now representing Billie in all aspects of the three criminal charges against her. You'll remember after her arrest last week, Dunn was charged with hindering apprehension, possession of a dangerous drug and lying to police.

Young is also representing Dunn in anything that's related to the search for Hailey and it's a move he wishes she would've done a long time ago.

"I think she (Billie) is a decent and good young woman who is desperately hoping to find her daughter alive," Young said.

The mother of missing 13-year-old cheerleader Hailey Dunn hired an attorney after her arrest a week ago, Young said Billie needed a lawyer for some time.

Young said Billie wasn't ready for all the media attention that only intensified after she lied to police about where her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, actually was.

"Some in law enforcement had suggested strongly to Billie that any association with Shawn Adkins was going to be considered evidence of guilt," Young said. "Sometimes matters of the heart are hard to break. She got scared and she said he's not here."

She may have become scared at that moment but she lied, and she's still seeing him.

FORT HOOD, Texas—Three months ago Hailey Dunn vanished from Colorado City, seemingly without a trace. Initially, volunteers poured into the town to help search for the 13-year-old cheerleader, but as days turned to weeks and then months, the number of volunteers dwindled.

When Misty Moody, who grew up in Colorado City and still has contacts in the West Texas town, heard of the stalled search efforts, she knew she and her husband, Sgt. Brian Moody, could help. The Moodys shared their proposal to join in the search effort with Soldiers and spouses in the 4th Battalion, 5th Air Missile Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, who responded with full support.

I used to use the old 1940s "Nancy Drew" drawing that was on the bottom of all the ND books for my icon. It was a silhouette of Nancy looking through the magnifying glass like that....

Yes...now that she has an attorney she has someone to spin for her and try to turn the mess she created into something that everyone can swallow. Problem is BJD is so much like Casey Anthony...just IMO she's left a big mess to clean up and if/when this ever goes to trial it will be her own actions and words that do her in.

OKLAHOMA -- Richy Cooper, Hailey Dunn’s uncle, spoke out for the first time Wednesday evening on the Help Bring Them Home Now (BTHN) online radio show.

Hailey is the 13-year-old Colorado City, Texas teen who was reported missing Dec. 27. According to the hosts of the BTHN show, Hailey's mother Billie Jean Dunn and her mother's former live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins are the only persons of interest in Hailey's disappearance.

Vigil Planned for Missing Teen Hailey Dunn 3/26/11

Colorado City, TX - Tomorrow marks three months since 13-year old Hailey Dunn vanished from her home in Colorado City.

In honor of her and her family the community will gather at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Colorado City's Ruddick Park to pray for her safe return.

Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, told KTAB news in Abilene that he will be there from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. and is hoping for a strong turn out.

Though hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement, and national organizations have teamed up in search parties covering three counties law enforcement has seemingly not gotten any closer to locating the missing girl.

The only names suspect in the case is Shawn Adkins, Billie Dunn’s boyfriend.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - As the search for missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn continues, her uncle has some harsh words for the former live-in boy of Hailey's mom. Speaking on an Internet radio program last Wednesday, Richy Cooper says, in his opinion, Shawn Adkins played a role in Hailey's disappearance.

"God help you, man," Cooper said of Adkins. "The train is coming and you're standing on the tracks, buddy."

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Friends and family gathered at Ruddick Park in Colorado City on Sunday to pray for the safe return of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, who's been missing for three months.

About 50 people showed up to light candles and sign pictures in hopes Hailey's case will be solved.

Unless this is taken out of context by the Reporter, this is a strange comment for Billie Jean Dunn to make. Who says that? Unless BJD knows Hailey is dead! If she thought Hailey was alive, why would she make a comment like that? Strange!

Thanks for posting a pic of the ugly tattoo. It does not even look like Hailey.

This tattoo reminds me of the tattoo that Ronald Cummings had done of his daughter, Haleigh, a few weeks after she went "missing." Haleigh was a beautiful little girl and the tattoo was awful!

If I was going to have a tattoo of my child at least I'd make certain the tattoo artist would have the skill to create one that looked like my child!

LindaP, I googled private investigator avatar and this pic came up. I can't find it anywhere now, so I'm not sure who she is!
I wish I could say yes, I am really a PI, but it wouldn't be true! I looked into going to school to become one, but the closest one is a 2-1/2 hour drive one-way. And that's if the school there has a program like the internet says. If not, the nearest one is 4 hours away. I do, however, have a certificate for an Honors Diploma for Private Investigator from Stratford Career Institute!


I cannot believe how Hailey's case is turning out to be like so many others. There are too many cases that have so much drama going on in the background that gets so much more attention than the actual missing person. The suspects seem to enjoy the celebrity status that they think applies to them.

And the tattoo...yuck!

ABILENE, Texas -- Officials close to the case now believe missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn is dead.

City Manager Pete Kampfer will confirm this revelation at a news conference Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Colorado City with new information in the Hailey Dunn investigation.

Hailey Dunn, a 13-year-old eighth-grader, has been missing since Dec. 27.

Kampfer has told KTXS News that officials have reasons to believe that Hailey Dunn is deceased. He said they couldn't say what those reasons were because this an on-going investigation.

This is very sad news.

"I hope the case is put to rest soon so I can get on with my life as being City Manager, Kampfer said."

I realize the toll and expense a case like this takes on a small town, but that was a little insensitive of the City Manager, IMO.

It's a sad day when it's officially announced that a missing child is presumed dead. I hope Hailey is found soon and will have a proper burial and those responsible are arrested and brought to justice.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- City Manager Pete Kampfer on Tuesday told KTXS News – specifically for the first time – that law enforcement officials have reasons to believe that missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn is deceased.

Amid questions and protests from relatives of the missing 13-year-old, Kampfer clarified his statements Wednesday, saying his comments about Hailey being deceased were not intended to be interpreted as “conclusive.”

He said his statement that officials “have reasons to believe that Hailey is deceased” was meant to convey the same approach law enforcement has had for more than two months: The case is considered a criminal investigation – not a runaway teenager.

I find it so strange that the City Manager is the liason between LE and the media. I realize Colorado City is a small little city.

As this case unfolded and he assumed that role, I just thought it was strange. I would think the CCPD Chief of Police would have assumed that role.

The City Manager is a former FBI guy.

Well, I'm off to the west Texas TV stations and other media to see if there is anything new in the Billie Jean Dunn saga.

It would be nice if there was new info on Hailey.

It is like there are three "stories" going on: the Billie Jean Dunn saga, Shawn Adkins and Hailey Dunn.

Officials in Colorado City now believe Hailey Dunn is deceased and have changed the requirements involving the $15,000 reward to any "information leading to her whereabouts."

The verbiage officially was changed Wednesday, more than three months after the Colorado City teen vanished. Originally the reward specifications asked for information leading to her "whereabouts and safe return."

Having no solid leads in the case prompted the change, said City Manager Pete Kampfer, who added that there is reason to believe Dunn is deceased.

"There is some reason to think that because we haven't located her," Kampfer said. "I can't say law enforcement thinks that way, but I believe she is either deceased or under duress."

Today's press conference left many Colorado City people with even more questions than they started with.

Emotion ran high today in Colorado City.

"It's not something you ever want to think about," said Hailey's grandma, Patricia Trischel.

A press conference was held today with officials saying Hailey is "most likely deceased." Colorado City Manager, Pete Kampfer, said the wording on the reward signs for Hailey will change from words like "safe return" to the "whereabouts of."

"We certainly understand as being in administration and being related to our local police department that Hailey may be deceased that may be our complete thinking that she is deceased but I am saying that she may also be under duress," said Colorado City Manager, Pete Kampfer.

Three months, and no answer to the question, "where is Hailey Dunn?" and that led the Colorado City City Manager, Pete Kampfer to speculate out loud the missing teen may be dead.

"Reasonably, she probably is deceased," said Kampfer to a room full of media.

COLORADO CITY - A press conference was held Wednesday in Colorado City involving missing teen Hailey Dunn. It was part informational and part damage control. The city manager backed off statements he made Tuesday that missing 13-year-old Hailey Dunn was dead.

The press conference was a bit confusing at times and even upsetting for members of Hailey's family. But in the end, the investigation into Hailey's disappearance continues and her loved ones are holding out hope.
