Casey Parsons pleaded guilty to 15 counts of federal fraud and identity theft Wednesday morning in Winston-Salem, in exchange for prosecutors dropping more than 60 other counts after her indictment in July.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Casey Parsons pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the government, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine; five counts of mail fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison and a $250,000 fine; four counts of aiding in the preparation of a false tax return, each of which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine; four counts of wire fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison and a $250,000 fine; and one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory sentence of two years, consecutive to any other sentence, and a $250,000 fine.

Parsons remains free pending sentencing Feb. 10. She faces 199 years in prison and $3.75 million in fines if she receives the maximum penalty on all charges.

...Wednesday’s plea could discredit Casey Parsons in the eyes of jurors or a judge, if she’s charged in connection with Erica’s disappearance, said James Wyatt, a Charlotte-based defense attorney.

It’s common for defense attorneys to negotiate with federal prosecutors in the months between a plea and sentencing, Wyatt said. Parsons could agree to trade information about Erica’s disappearance in return for a reduced sentence.

“If the Parsonses had knowledge about the disappearance or murder of Erica, then it is likely that their lawyer would ... try to work out an agreement about how that information would be used and what charges could be brought,” Wyatt said.

But it’s a risk, Wyatt said. Information the Parsonses divulge could be used against them.

A source with federal government told WBTV that by pleading guilty to the charges, Parsons admitted to collecting federal assistance for Erica when she was not living there. She also admitted to filing taxes using Erica's name when she was not living there.

...In motions filed last week, the government lists dozens of subpoenas requesting documents and electronic records from several banks, medical institutions like the Stanly County Dental Clinic and Carolinas Healthcare, the Great Lakes Educational Corporation, phone companies like Sprint, and even the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services and the Rowan County Department of Social Services.

Attorneys representing the Parsons in the financial crime trial do not want testimony about any alleged of abuse of Erica or any discussion of her disappearance to be allowed to be introduced.

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - It appears that the adoptive father of missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons is set to go to trial on federal fraud charges, despite the fact that his wife accepted a plea agreement on those same charges.

...Last week Casey Parsons pleaded guilty to 15 charges and will be sentenced in February.  Her husband, Sandy Wade Parsons, was not part of the plea agreement and still faces 76 counts.

On Tuesday, Sandy Parsons attorney filed a motion in federal court dealing with instructions to the jury in preparation for the upcoming trial, which is set for October 14.  Sandy Parsons was scheduled to be in court for a pre-trial conference.

I think this was referring to the alleged abuse Erica may have endured from the Parsons. The abuse allegations were already headlines when she said this.

Update: Trial in Sandy Parsons fraud case set for next week in Winston-Salem

GREENSBORO — The federal fraud trial for a father of a missing adopted girl is scheduled to begin next week in Winston-Salem, officials said today.

Sandy Wade Parsons has been indicted on more than 40 counts. Those include one count of conspiracy to commit fraud, 20 counts of theft of government property, 20 counts of mail fraud, one count of false statement regarding food stamps and one count of aggravated identity theft.

...The U.S. Attorney's office estimates the trial will last three or four days, according to a court document. It's unclear how long jury selection will take, due to the publicity surrounding the disappearance of Erica Parsons and search for her.

Erica Parsons was home schooled by her adoptive parents. Her biological mother says that's part of the reason no one knew Erica was missing for more than a year and a half.

Casey Parsons takes stand in fraud trial

Sandy Parsons — the adoptive father of missing teen Erica Parsons — took the stand in his own defense Friday during his trial on federal fraud charges and deflected blame to his wife, who earlier took a plea deal on the same charges.

A jury began deliberating Friday afternoon but did not reach a verdict. Deliberations will resume Monday morning.

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - The hearing is continued for the adoptive parents of missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons after they did not appear in court for a review that could have altered the custody of their two youngest children.

Casey and Sandy Parsons were scheduled to appear in court in Salisbury on Thursday morning but did not show up. A source says Casey is in, or has been in, the hospital for an unknown reason.

Sources also say any custody change is unlikely since Casey and Sandy Parsons have both been convicted of fraud, and after facing sentencing in federal court in February.

Prosecutors want to delay the sentencing of Casey Parsons so that it would take place on the same day as sentencing for her husband, Sandy Parsons, in federal court in Winston-Salem.

Casey and Sandy Parsons are the adoptive parents of missing Rowan County teenager Erica Lynn Parsons. Erica Parsons was reported missing in late July of 2013 by her adoptive brother, but had not actually been seen for more than a year before the report was filed.

Despite an extensive investigation by the Rowan Sheriff's Office, the SBI, and the FBI, no trace of Erica Parsons, dead or alive, has ever been found.  Investigators have collected evidence from the Parsons former home on Miller Chapel Road, as well as property owned by other family members.

...Sandy will be sentenced on February 18.

Once again I am confused! I'm not sure I understand your question, JAO.  Casey pleaded guilty to 16 charges; Sandy went to trial and was convicted of much more.  As far as I know, they have never revealed anything about Erica, even for a plea deal.  They are both due to be sentenced tomorrow.

An attorney not affiliated with the case told WBTV that witnesses can be called during the sentencing hearing and that those witnesses would be allowed to speak about Erica Parsons, her life with Casey and Sandy Parsons, and her abrupt disappearance from the family’s home on Miller Chapel Road in Rowan County.

...Sentencing is set for 9:30 Wednesday morning at the federal courthouse in Winston-Salem.

SALISBURY, N.C. - The adoptive parents of missing teen Erica Parsons are in court Wednesday to learn what sentence they will face for fraud.

...In Federal Court Wednesday, the government called their first witness to the stand, Angie Miller, who testified that she paid Casey Parsons $10,000 to be a surrogate mother for her.

Miller testified their surrogate agreement included $1000 monthly payments to Parsons' church, but said immediately, Casey asked that the money go to her instead because she needed to purchase a washer and dryer. Miller continued that each month from then on, Casey asked the money be given to her instead of the church.

Miller then became emotional as she described when Casey told her that she had miscarried. Miller says she found out later from Casey's sister, Ashley, that Casey was still pregnant and trying to sell her the unborn baby. Miller, with the help of authorities, was able to get her son when he was born months later.

The government says it still has six more witnesses before both Casey and Sandy lawyers will present their character witnesses.

Several people, including family members, testified in federal court Wednesday in a sentencing trial for the adoptive parents of a missing Rowan County teenager.

...Ashley said she saw bruises and marks on Erica. Casey gave Erica to Ashley to look after for a few months so that she "wouldn't kill her," Ashley said. Adding that Casey "couldn't stand the sight of her face." Ashley said her sister told her she had lost control and assaulted Erica.

When Erica first started living with her adoptive parents, she called them "mom" and "dad." Casey didn't like that and decided she should call them by their names, Casey and Sandy, Ashley said. Casey told Erica to never call her "mom" again.

in this article there is a paragraph that states "A spokesman for the Rowan Sheriff’s office said Erica’s case is “certainly still an active and ongoing investigation.” No state charges have been brought against the Parsonses.

Son describes family’s shocking abuse of missing teen Erica Parsons

WINSTON-SALEM Erica Parsons lived a life of punishment and terror at the hands of her adoptive parents and siblings before disappearing altogether in 2011, according to testimony Wednesday during a sentencing hearing for Sandy and Casey Parsons.

...James Parsons, who was about 18 when 13-year-old Erica went missing, said he and the other children in the family routinely abused the girl.

“I would hit her, physically abuse her, fists, belts,” James Parsons said under oath Wednesday.

He said he abused the girl from the time he was age 5 and stopped it when he was 16.

“I didn’t want to hit her no more – I couldn’t stand it,” he said.

He said his mother Casey Parsons encouraged the other children to abuse Erica and he saw his mother often beat her.

“She would beat her with a belt if she didn’t listen,” James Parsons said. “Momma would bend her fingers back.”

...Erica was often locked in a closet in the various homes the family lived in, James Parsons said. Sometimes she would be beaten for relieving herself in the closet, he said.

Food was often withheld from her as punishment, he said.

“Early in life, she’d eat dog food from a can,” he said.

James Parsons said the last time he saw Erica was in 2011, when she was standing in a corner as punishment.

“She didn’t look too good – she looked like a zombie,” he testified. “She said she did not feel good. She said she could not breath too good.”

James Parsons said Erica was gone the next morning and he never saw her again. His parents came back that morning to the house and he was told that Erica had gone to live with her biological grandmother.

“Momma looked normal. Daddy looked sick, like he was about to throw up,” James Parsons testified. “Momma went on her recliner with the computer. Daddy, it was a blank stare.”

WINSTON-SALEM Erica Parsons lived a stark life of punishment and terror at the hands of her adoptive parents and siblings before vanishing in 2011, according to testimony Wednesday during a sentencing hearing for Sandy and Casey Parsons.

...But the hearing quickly turned into a shocking catalog – and the most detailed public account to date of what investigators know – of abuse Erica suffered. It poured out hour after sickening hour when Assistant U.S. Attorney Anand Ramaswamy sought to increase the penalties the couple faced by introducing evidence of other wrongdoing – including, he said, failure to report a death.

...Tara Cataldo, the FBI case agent on the girl’s disappearance, said that investigators, armed with a search warrant, inspected the Parsonses’ home in August 2013. They noticed holes in the wall beside a bedroom closet that seemed to be from an old eye-hook lock typically used to hold screen doors closed.

Carpet and wall board from the closet were sent to the FBI laboratory, and traces of Erica’s blood and other DNA – believed to be from saliva or urine – were detected, she said.

...Janet Parsons, Sandy’s stepmother and Casey’s mother-in-law, also testified Wednesday. She said that for a time in 2011, they all lived together in her China Grove home. Janet Parsons and her husband currently have custody of the family’s two youngest children.

“Erica wasn’t treated as kindly as the others,” she said. “She had to do more chores. She was kind of like a little Cinderella – she had to do the chores.”

Janet Parsons said that Casey Parsons and the rest of her family once went to the beach for a short visit, and Erica was left in the house alone. Her grandfather found her hiding, and she said she was told not to be seen while the others were at the beach.

“We had no knowledge she was there, which is scary if you think about it,” Janet Parsons testified. “She was hidden.”

Her husband, Sandy Parsons, refused a plea bargain and was found guilty in October of one count of conspiracy to defraud the government, one count of aggravated identity theft, one count of false statement to a government agency, 20 counts of theft of government funds and 20 counts of mail fraud. He faces a maximum of 509 years in prison and fines totaling $6 million.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A judge said Friday that based on testimony he heard last month, he believes that Erica Parsons' adoptive parents abandoned the teenager's body in November 2011.

Casey was sentenced to 10 years in prison while Sandy was sentenced to eight years.

Casey and Sandy Parsons sentenced to combined 18 years in prison

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - The adoptive parents of missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons were sentenced in federal court to a combined total of 18 years in prison Friday.

Sandy Wade Parsons, 41, and Casey Stone Parsons, 40, were sentenced by United States District Judge Thomas D. Schroeder in Winston-Salem.

Sandy Parsons was sentenced to 96 months in prison; 3 years supervised release; $14,062.00 in restitution; and a special assessment of $4,300.00.

Casey Parsons was sentenced to 120 months in prison; 3 years supervised release; $41,814.00 in restitution; and a special assessment of $1,500.00.

They were taken into custody immediately.

...Judge Schroeder lectured both Casey and Sandy as each heard their sentence.  He said that he believed that they had abused Erica in such an extreme manner that when something happened to her in 2011, they refused to get medical help because the abuse would be evident.

Schroeder described Erica Parsons as a "defenseless little girl who only wanted to be loved," but instead was the victim of "extreme" abuse.  He said that he believed the earlier testimony that Erica was forced to live in a closet, that she was constantly in fear of soiling herself, and that if she did, she was punished.  Schroeder said he believed that on the Erica died in 2011, and that on that night she was first punished for complaining that she felt bad, then died and was taken and abandoned by Casey and Sandy in what the judge called a "horrible, horrible act committed in the dark of night."

"I have sentenced thousands of people over the years," Judge Schroeder told the couple, "but no case I've ever had is as disturbing as this one."

The new home for the adoptive father of missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons appears to be a prison in Farmville, Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Corrections Offender Search lists Sandy Wade Parsons as Offender #1720326.

...Casey Parsons is still listed as being at the Forsyth County Jail in Winston-Salem. That jail is often used to hold federal prisoners prior to their reassignment to permanent locations.

Casey Parsons sent to federal prison hospital in Texas

Casey Parsons, adoptive mother of missing teenager Erica Parsons, has been sent to a federal prison hospital in Texas to serve her sentence.

...During her sentencing hearing in Winston-Salem, Parsons’ attorney, Alec Carpenter IV of Greensboro, asked U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder to request she be placed in a prison where she could receive treatment for an undisclosed disorder. Parsons has suffered for years from complications from a gastric bypass procedure.

Parsons filed an appeal of her conviction May 5. Her husband, Sandy Parsons, 41, serving an eight-year sentence in the crimes at Butner Federal Correctional Institution north of Durham, has also appealed his conviction.

A few posts above, the mother stated Erica was probably afraid to come home because of JAMES!!! Talk about attempting deflection and abdication of role as a parent.

Erica was fed dog food by Casey Parsons as punishment for stealing food or sweets, was often beaten, was frequently locked in a closet and was made to stand in a corner rather than play with other children, family members testified...."

James, an older son, did speak to authorities regarding the treatment of Erica by himself and his parents. I am confident the mother was trying to foist all the blame for Erica "missing" upon her son...he DID rat his parents out.

Erica Parsons first reported missing two years ago today

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons was first reported missing two years ago, on July 30, 2013.  The girl's brother, James, went to the Rowan Sheriff's Office and reported that Erica had not actually been seen by anyone for about a year and half.

Two years later there is still no sign of Erica, but many other things have changed.

Concerned residents bring in man with trained dogs to search for Erica Parsons

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - Two local residents who are concerned about missing Rowan County teenager Erica Parsons have called in a man from Illinois who is known for searching for missing persons.

Shannon Moss and Wanda Rogers decided to take the unusual step of contacting K-9 Specialties after reading about the success the owner and his dogs had in finding missing children.

“We don’t want people to forget she’s still missing, she’s not been found, we’ve got to find her, whatever we got to do we’ve got to come together in Rowan County and find her," Rogers said. “People ask me why am I doing this why I haven’t gave up, it's because she needs to be found, she…it’s personal now, I didn’t know her, but I do now, so it’s personal. She’s got to be found.  She is a human being and my biggest thing if they, if something really bad happened to her, she’s been throwed away like a piece of trash and she’s not a piece of trash, she is a little girl, she deserves to be found, and I’m not giving up.”
